KOTA KINABALU, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- Some 400 golfers from 40 countries will be heading to Sabah to participate in the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) Final 2019 from Oct 19 to 26.
The tournament will be held at four golf courses namely Sutera Harbour Marina Golf and Country Club as well as the Sabah Golf and Country Club here; Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club in Tuaran and Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai.
The event is organised by Delta Trend Golf and Leisure Holidays Sdn Bhd, which successfully hosted the WAGC finals in Kuala Lumpur in 2017 and Johor Bahru last year.
Perodua has been the title sponsor for the past seven years and other agencies such as Tourism Malaysia and Sabah Tourism Board (STB) will be playing a vital role to ensure a successful of WAGC Final 2019.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew in a media conference here today said her ministry has been actively promoting tourism in Sabah including sports tourism and recognised the importance of golf in attracting visitors and investors to the state.
"I believe that apart from boosting visitor arrivals and tourism receipts for Sabah, Kota Kinabalu will definitely be in the world spotlight during the tournament," she said.
Golfers contesting in the WAGC Final represent their countries after having emerged as winners of national tournaments.
The World Amateur Golfers Invitational (WAGI), a separate tournament for invited dignitaries, business leaders and corporate sponsors, will also be held alongside the WAGC.
Malaysian teams were crowned world champions in 2012 and 2015, and twice second runner-up, in 2016 and last year.
Meanwhile, Tourism Malaysia chairman Datuk Ahmad Shah Hussein Tambakau said four out of five Malaysia representatives in WAGC are from Sabah.
He said through this tournament, the number of tourists from Europe to Sabah is expected to increase.
