Second Row Start For Kornfeil; Fahmi Claims Tenth Position In Sepang Qualifying

Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia – Saturday 24th October
Circuit: Sepang International Circuit
Circuit Length: 5.5 km
Bike #63 – Zulfahmi Khairuddin
Qualifying: P10; 2’13.280 (DRY) – 13 laps
Bike #84 – Jakub Kornfeil
Qualifying: P5; 2’12.987 (DRY) – 12 laps
DRIVE M7 SIC Racing Team riders Jakub Kornfeil and Zulfahmi Khairuddin are looking for a strong finish to the Sepang weekend after qualifying 5th and 10th for tomorrow’s Malaysian Grand Prix.
Jakub Kornfeil qualified his 2015 KTM machine on the second row after launching himself into the 2m12s lap times to achieve a solid fifth place for Sunday’s Moto3 race. Working hard on track the Czech rider provisionally held onto second position before narrowly missing out on a front row start in the final minutes.
Determined to impress in front of his home crowd, teammate Zulfahmi Khairuddin immediately got up to speed around the 5.5km circuit. Initially holding onto fifth position the Malaysian rider looked in good form as he relentlessly pushed for more whilst remaining within the top fifteen throughout the session. Much to the delight of the Malaysian crowd, Fahmi looked set for a stunning penultimate lap but caught in the mix of a chaotic Moto3 field, was unable to find a clear track and further improve his time.
Johan Stigefelt – Team Manager
“It’s been a great weekend so far here in Malaysia at our home circuit. Both riders have really proved that they are fast and have taken big steps forward over the last few races. Today it was great to see both Jakub and Fahmi in the top five and it was only in the last few minutes that some of the other riders were able to go a little quicker. To have Jakub in fifth and Fahmi in tenth is very good. We are ready for tomorrow; we have good starting positions, a good base set-up with the race tyres and we’re feeling confident. Both riders just need to make a good start and we’ll be there for sure. It’s going to be a nerve racking race and hard to watch but I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do here at Sepang.”

“I expected to be a little bit faster in the qualifying today but I think I can be happy with tenth position. We started with a soft tyre in the rear and I went quicker straight away, which put me in fifth place. I expected the last run to be even faster, maybe by two tenths but I really couldn’t find a clear track as there were so many riders in front. Tomorrow I have to be really aggressive and defend myself throughout the race because it looks like there’s going to be a big group and a big fight. I really want to enjoy the race tomorrow and finish in a good position in front of our home crowd.”
#84 Jakub Kornfeil
“I know today there was a possibility for more; I was really hoping in my head that I could stay on the front row but still fifth position is good. It’s exactly in the middle of the second row and it’s actually a great position for the start because you can really get the slip stream to the first corner; you can see the light and you have a target in front of you to try and catch, so I’m happy for this. I really have to thank my chief mechanic Mark because he gave me such a good bike today. The whole team have been working very hard, especially him, to give me the best bike possible and they did, so I’m very grateful for this. I felt so comfortable on the bike today, especially during the first and second run in qualifying. On the last run we put the new tyres in but there was quite a lot of chatter because there was so much grip on the bike. The last lap was not perfect and I wanted a little bit more, so for this reason I am little disappointed because for sure I could have been higher again. Nevertheless we are just three tenths off pole which is great, especially here at our home Grand Prix. We are showing also with Fahmi that we are fast so I’m really looking forward to the race tomorrow.”
