Zulfahmi Khairuddin concluded the opening day at Motegi feeling confident and positive after finishing 12th fastest in today’s combined free practice times. Continuing his strong form previously shown at Aragon, the 23 year old made an impressive start immediately finding his rhythm around the 4.8km circuit. Predominantly lapping in the 1m58s lap times, the Malaysian rider completed a second successful session finishing afternoon practice as the third fastest KTM rider, with 9th place overall.
Fellow DRIVE M7 SIC Racing Team rider Jakub Kornfeil also made a good start to his Japanese Grand Prix weekend, finishing FP1 in a respectable 13th place, just two tenths outside the top ten. Following some small changes to the KTM, the afternoon’s session saw a harder start for the Czech rider, with an increased track temperature hindering the set-up of the #84 machine. Quickly taking control, Kornfeil’s crew got straight to work on reverting his settings and making further improvements, allowing him to regain his momentum and conclude the day feeling optimistic and focussed ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying.

“Today has been good; I feel very comfortable on the bike. The whole team have worked really well and I have a set-up that I am confident with. We only made a couple of small changes for the afternoon’s session but they were very good; I was able to stop the bike even better in the braking points, which is very important around this track. For tomorrow we will look at making a couple more small adjustments but we don’t want to make too many as the set-up we have now is good. However, to go one second faster is necessary for qualifying, so this is what I am focussing on now. We are moving in the right direction and we have good momentum; I believe we can do well here.”

“In the morning I felt very good on the bike and we finished first practice feeling positive and ready for FP2. After the first session we made just a couple of small adjustments to try and improve the time, like we always do. We then started the afternoon’s session on used tyres. Unfortunately the changes made didn’t help so much and combined with the used tyre and increased track temperature the bike felt harder to ride; it was quite slippery front and rear. In the end we adjusted the gearing and the bike was much better. Also with new tyres I felt a big difference. Today I was again consistently lapping alone, so I couldn’t take advantage of any slipstream. For tomorrow I don’t want to change the bike anymore because now we have a set-up that works; everything is there. We are prepared for qualifying, we just need to be clever, make a good strategy and then of course we can finish higher up the field.”
