Countries seek our help in tourism

KOTA KINABALU: Several countries are seeking Malaysia’s help and partnership to develop their own tourism products, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen. Dr Ng, who met with nine foreign ministers and two deputy ministers on the sidelines of the World Tourism Conference here, said that Laos had Malaysia’s technical assistance for Visit Laos Year 2012. “We hope to send some ministry officials to assist them in designing and creating a mechanism for their proposed Visit Laos Year programme,” she told reporters at a media briefing with United Nations World Tourism Organisation secretary-general Taleb Rifai.
She said Brunei’s foreign minister had also discussed the possibility of having a joint religious tourism package with Malaysia.

“We are in the final stages of discussion and hope to finalise the matter in the next few months,” she said, adding that many Muslims from the Middle East come to Malaysia during Ramadan.
She said Brunei had much to offer with its beautiful mosques and museum for such tourists.
Dr Ng said that Malaysia was also looking at signing a memorandum of understanding on tourism with Chad and Sudan following her meetings with their foreign ministers.
