SEMPORNA, April 23 (Bernama) -- A special tourist jetty as well as a tourist information centre and a new tourism product, the "Borneo Semporna Proboscis River Cruise", were opened and launched here on Friday to enhance the tourism appeal of this east coast district. Minister in the Chief Minister's Department Datuk Nasir Tun Sakaran opened the jetty and the centre which are located at the water village here.
The facilities are part of a two-phase project, costing RM2 million, to enhance tourism facilities in the district. According to Semporna district officer Abdul Muhamed Ibnu Abd Kadir Baba, the first phase of the project consists of the construction of an office block which houses government agencies, a craft centre as well as a "dive shop". The second phase involves the construction of 12 buildings which will house offices of tour agents as well as other facilities.
The Borneo Semporna Proboscis River Cruise will bring tourists along the Sungai Buaya in Kampung Tonggulangan, about 20km from here, to watch the unique proboscis monkey, a species endemic to Sabah. The cruise, launched by Bugaya assemblyman Datuk Ramlee Marahaban, is expected to attract 1,000 tourists a day.
