KANGAR, April 1 (Bernama) -- The Harumanis season has begun and the fruit, dubbed the "King of Mangoes", will be made available to the public for the whole of April. Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu, who launched the sale of the Harumanis at the Bukit Bintang plantation near here today, hoped that the farmers would help increase the yield of this popular fruit.
Perlis Agriculture Department director Ghazali Zakaria said that starting this year, a tagging system had been used to control the quality of Harumanis produced by the plantations supervised by the department. However, the production this season was only 55 tonnes, a far cry from last year's production of 100 tonnes, he said. "This was mainly due to weather change which caused the mango flowers to fall off," he said. The Harumanis produced by the Perlis Agriculture Department is sold at between RM5 and RM10 per kilogramme, depending on the grade.
