The Background:
Based on the prolific classic novel by the Late Prof. Dr. Hamka from Indonesia, Di Bawah Lindungan Kaabah entails the greatness of love for Allah and among mankind. The novel has been filmed twice but this is its maiden time to be transformed into the theatrical stage.
Featuring top artists from Malaysia such as Adi Putra, Nasha Aziz, Fizo Omar, Nurul Elfira Loy, Dafi, Sherry Ibrahim, Liza Abdullah etcetera, it is also supported by the strong backbone of its award winning creative team such as Siti Rohayah Attan (producer), Rosminah Tahir (playwright & director), Datuk Suhaimi Md Zain (composer & music director) and A. Aris Kadir (choreographer).
The Plot:
After the death of his father, the four year old Hamid helps his mother to sell cake and Malay delicacies around the village in order to pay for his education. Fate leads him to the family of benevolent Engku Haji Jaffar who tokes him in as a foster son while his mother serves in the family. He becomes a study-mate to Zainab, the only daughter of Engku Jaffar. Despite the difference in social classes, Hamid was brought up as one of their own.
By the time he reaches adulthood, Hamid finds himself attracted to Zainab, unknown to him, she also has feelings for him. He furthers his studies in Padang Panjang and continues to correspond with Zainab.
Asiah (Zainab’s mother) requested Hamid to convince Zainab to marry her cousin after the passing of Engku Jaffar. Hamid did as asked and thinking that his efforts were successful yet heartbroken, Hamid went travelling and eventually headed to Mecca.
During the Hajj, he meets his best friend, Salleh who told told him that his wife, Rosnah (best friend to Zainab) wrote to him saying Zainab has not been married and she loves Hamid. Hamid intends to return home to be with Zainab after his pilgrimage. Zainab, who was already ill dies soon afterwards. Distraught, Hamid continues to perform his Hajj and fell ill during the process and dies right after he completes the Hajj in front of Kaabah.
