Minister Of Tourism Leads Delegation To The Middle East To Promote VMY 2014

DUBAI, 5 May 2014Tourism Malaysia’s efforts to publicise the country’s fourth Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2014 and its comprehensive promotional activities continue in the Middle East.

The Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia Dato‘ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz is leading a Malaysian delegation to participate in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai from 5 to 8 May, followed by a post-ATM tourism sales mission to Qatar and Jordan.

The four-day ATM, the biggest travel and tourism fair in the Middle East, started today at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC). It offers Malaysia an excellent platform to market and boost awareness of VMY 2014 to the travel and tourism industry players in the Middle East.

ATM 2014 marks the 21st anniversary of Malaysia’s participation in this prestigious event, which is a strong testimony to the country’s continued interest in the West Asian market and its commitment to attract more tourists from this market.

A total of 141 sellers from 82 organisations in Malaysia are participating in this year’s ATM, comprising a good mix of hotels and resorts, travel agents, tourism products owners, and representatives from the state governments.

The Malaysia Pavilion, located at Hall 1, Sheikh Saeed Arena (Stand No. AS6420 - AS6620), officially opened today by Dato‘ Seri Mohamed Nazri. He is also scheduled to meet the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, the Chairman of Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Department (STCM), as well as the Chairmen/CEOs of top airlines in the Middle East. Besides that, meetings with top travel agencies in the Middle East and media interviews will also be held.

During ATM 2014, the Penang State Government will be launching a tourist guidebook for Muslim travellers titled “Experience Penang – A Muslim Travel Guide 2014”. It serves as a comprehensive guide on tourist attractions in Penang, as well as restaurants that serve halal food, and accommodation with halal-certified kitchens, among others.

On 6 May, Tourism Malaysia will be hosting a dinner at Grand Hyatt Dubai. The ‘Visit Malaysia Year 2014 Evening’ will give the guests a glimpse of what awaits them in Malaysia, especially during the celebration of VMY 2014. It is also to show Tourism Malaysia’s appreciation to buyers, media and invited guests for their support in promoting travel to Malaysia.

After ATM, Tourism Malaysia’s promotional efforts in the Middle East will continue with a tourism sales mission to Qatar (10 – 12 May) and Jordan (12 – 15 May). Programmes for both destinations include courtesy calls on Minister of Tourism Qatar, HE Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Jordan, and CEO of Qatar Airways, as well as travel marts, press conferences, gala dinners, and meetings with Malaysian Embassy’s officials.

In 2013, a total of 324,437 West Asian tourists visited Malaysia. The country recorded 19,830 tourist arrivals from UAE and 7,264 tourists from Qatar, as well as 6,278 tourists from Jordan.

Last year, Tourism Malaysia added another feather in its cap by garnering the “Best Global Tourism Advertising Campaign” award at the 4th Middle East Business Leaders Awards 2013 in Abu Dhabi. The event was jointly organised by the Federation of GCC Chambers and The Leaders International.

At the recent ITB Berlin, the world’s leading travel trade show, Tourism Malaysia’s video bagged the gold award at the 2014 Golden City Gate Tourism Media Awards. Its winning entry, ‘Malaysia Truly Asia – The Essence of Asia’, edged out other international entries in the Country category.

Malaysia also emerged as the world's top Muslim-friendly holiday destination in a survey released in early 2013. The study by Singapore-based Muslim travel consultancy Crescentrating ranked countries on how well they cater to the growing number of Muslim holidaymakers seeking Halal, or Islam-compliant, food and services.

Other major accolades that Malaysia received include being listed as one of the top 10 destinations to visit in Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2014. Besides that, Kuala Lumpur was ranked by CNN as the fourth Best Shopping City in the World in 2013 for two consecutive years. Malaysia was also listed as the third top retirement haven in the world for 2013, based on internationalliving.com’s annual global retirement index.

British expat's passion for Ipoh

Ian Anderson sharing the rich history of Ipoh with the Swiss tourism students
in Jalan Panglima. Pic by Farhan Najib

IPOH: A group of Swiss students, who were here on a five-day tourism exposure of the city, was mildly surprised to learn that the person guiding them on the tour was himself an expatriate.

For Ian Anderson, a 75-year-old retired navy commander, the chance to show the heritage of the city to the students was one not to be missed. Having lived in Ipoh for 15 years, Anderson said the city was an interesting place to visit as it was rich with history rooted in the vast tin-mining legacy.
He, however, lamented that not much was being done by those given the charge to promote tourism in Ipoh, especially the state-related tourism agencies.
"People often ask me why I speak to people about the beauty of the city? Why do I take pains to narrate its rich past? "My simple answer, and it is the truth, is that no one else is doing it. Not the authorities certainly," he said, after ending his 90-minute session with the Swiss students.
Anderson, who has carved a name as a heritage conservationist of Ipoh in the last decade, spends much of his time collecting and conserving heritage items such as old photographs, restoring heritage buildings and holding exhibitions on Ipoh.
He made his mark in literature on the city by compiling and editing a book entitled Ipoh, My Home Town which is sold in bookshops for RM100. Anderson also runs www.ipohworld.org, which is an outlet for him and his team to preserve the city's history online.
With the tag Saving Yesterday For Tomorrow, Anderson said he hoped not only to record Ipoh's past but also to create interest in the younger generation to love the city. His passion for the city's past was demonstrated when he spoke to the Swiss students as he showed them around Han Chin Pet Soo, a Hakka tin miners club. The club was set up in 1893, while the clubhouse was built in 1929.
Anderson also took them to the nearby Concubine Lane (now known as Lorong Panglima) where he spoke of the Chinese tin mining tycoons of yore and their activities. Swiss student Vanessa Zimmermann said she was impressed with Anderson's knowledge of the city.
"We learnt a lot about the city from Anderson. "His narration of the rich past of Ipoh's tin mining industry and how it was built since the 1870s is excellent. "And, knowing that Anderson is an expatriate makes it more inspiring for us to learn more about the city.
"My observation of Ipoh is that while it is a nice place to visit and live, it is quite hard to go from place to place because there are no proper signboards," she said, adding that the authorities needed to focus on how to make Ipoh attractive to young people.

Raising funds in a fun way

Haitamin (left) and Tourism Malaysia domestic marketing director Datuk Musa Yusof flagging off the Putrajaya Tourism Hunt 2014.
More than 600 people gathered in Putrajaya on an early Saturday morning for the Putrajaya Tourism Hunt 2014.

The popular event, organised by Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) since 2001, seeks to highlight various tourist spots in Putrajaya. There were 145 teams from among the public and 15 teams from the local authorities of places such as Kuantan, Bera, Ampang Jaya, Bentong, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Tinggi.

PPj deputy president Datuk Haitamin Ishak flagged off the hunt, which also aimed to raise funds for the less fortunate, at 8.30am. Previous years had seen participants looking for food “treasures” such as rice, biscuits and cooking oil. This year, however, the participants had to search for treasure in monetary form.

This year, Rumah Anak-anak Yatim dan Miskin Taman Baidui in Dengkil and Madrasah Al-Mustafawiyah Sungai Tangkas in Bangi were the beneficiaries of the hunt. Apart from giving the participants a chance to do good, the hunt also allowed them to enjoy the sights of the federal administrative capital, in line with efforts to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

Participants had the opportunity to win prizes worth up to RM31,000 sponsored by Tourism Malaysia, Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Cruise Tasik Putrajaya, Maybank, Putrajaya Perdana, ARL Global, Lagenda Cuisine, and KLCC Management.

In the local authority category, Group A from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) came in first and took home RM3,000 and a hamper, while DBKL’s Group B and the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council were in second and third place, respectively.
In the open category, the team “Try Our Luck” was the champion, while “Vettai Sakhti” and “Bun Bun Chin” took the second and third spots, respectively.
