Put politics aside to grow tourism, says Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman

PETALING JAYA: Political differences should never stand in the way of advancing and expanding Malaysia’s tourism industry, says Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin.

The Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman added that government efforts to promote tourism must not be politicised or tied to racial issues, stressing that all political parties should work together to revitalise the national economy through the sector.

“We can work together to promote Perlis’ unique rural and natural charm, which holds strong appeal for European and Western tourists,” he said in a statement here on Saturday (Feb 28).

Yeoh said this following a courtesy visit to the Perlis Mentri Besar, Abu Bakar Hamzah, during which they discussed strengthening federal–state cooperation in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and Visit Perlis Year 2026.

He described the meeting as cordial and constructive, with both parties agreeing that tourism is a key engine of economic growth.

Yeoh commended Abu Bakar for fostering cooperation between the federal and state governments.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia recorded 42.19 million tourist arrivals last year, an 11.2 per cent increase that outpaced global and regional growth rates.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the figures, presented by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry at the cabinet meeting today, were up from 37.96 million visitors in 2024.

"Of that, 34 media organisations were approved, involving total funding of RM10.3 million.

"This reflects the industry's readiness to embrace progressive transformation, particularly in content technology and talent development," he said.

He added that Phase Two, which ran from Feb 9 to 22, saw participation from 19 media organisations, while Phase Three will open this Sunday until March 14.

AI training to boost Malaysia’s small inbound operators

The Consortium of Inbound Tourism Alliance (CINTA) is working with industry partners to support small travel companies and product owners in Malaysia through AI-driven tourism training.

The initiative aims to help participants build their own online platforms, complete with booking engines and payment gateways, while leveraging AI tools to manage enquiries more efficiently and facilitate seamless payment processing.

CINTA chairman Uzaidi Udanis stated the six-month training programme, which began recently, is being conducted in collaboration with Asnirez, Viator’s official connectivity partner, and Malaysia Airlines Academy.

He noted that the fully independent traveller (FIT) segment remains a largely untapped market for many local operators.

He said: “When a travel agent receives an overseas enquiry for 40 passengers compared with one for three passengers, who do you think they will prioritise? The time spent preparing quotations is the same, but the profit margins are very different.”

The programme, which includes both physical and online classes, has attracted 600 participants and is designed to equip them with the skills to become digital entrepreneurs, moving beyond the traditional role of service providers. Through innovative training, AI-powered tools and direct access to global marketplaces, participants are guided to develop their own bookable products, build destination brands and position themselves as inbound tourism leaders.

Uzaidi added that the programme aligns closely with the objectives of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which is focused on driving sustainable growth in arrivals, yield and geographic dispersal. By enhancing the digital and product development capabilities of small tour operators and product owners, the initiative supports national efforts to encourage longer stays and channel visitor spend towards community-based and experience-led tourism offerings across Malaysia.

Uzaidi said: “If we believe the industry can do more than just sell hotels and transport, then this is where the opportunity lies. By creating unique, bookable experiences that place local stories, culture and communities, we can unlock greater value from FIT travel while strengthening Malaysia’s destination appeal.”

He added that growing regional interest signals the programme’s relevance beyond Malaysia. Individual agents from Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines have already expressed interest, and Uzaidi said CINTA is exploring plans to replicate the initiative in other markets.

Penang Esplanade seawall wins prestigious Unesco heritage award

GEORGE TOWN: Penang's Esplanade Seawall and Promenade project has gained international acclaim at the 2025 Unesco Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The project received the New Design in Heritage Contexts award, along with Special Recognition for Sustainable Development.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai shared the announcement via Facebook today, citing the jury's commendation of the project as a national benchmark for conservation and modern design.

The seven-member international jury noted that the reimagining of the historic civic space incorporated an innovative hybrid of traditional and modern engineering to combat coastal degradation.

"The design maintains form and function to enhance community well-being, improve access to the waterfront, and support environmental stewardship in response to climate change", the jury said.

The new seawall features a wide promenade replicating its 19th-century typology, utilising traditional granite construction, a concealed sheet-pile toe, and rock revetment for erosion resistance.

A unique feature is a lower terrace that submerges during spring tides, exposing the original seawall near the Cenotaph War Memorial.

"Under expert guidance, the enhancement of the Esplanade's historicity highlights the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage property Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca. Its dual-structure, local materials, and stakeholder governance are studied as models across Malaysia," the jury added.

Tourism Malaysia Holds Networking Sessions In Southern Thailand In Conjucntion With 11th Melayu Day 2026 Programme

NARATHIWAT — Tourism Malaysia Bangkok organised three networking sessions from 11 to 13 February 2026 with local travel agencies in the lower southern part of Thailand, namely in the Narathiwat, Pattani, and Songkhla provinces. These sessions were held in conjunction with participation in the 11th Melayu Day 2026 programme, which took place from 13 to 15 February 2026 in Yala province.

Led by Madam Baizuri Baharum, Director of International Promotion (ASEAN), these sessions focused on strengthening existing ties and building new networking opportunities with industry players from these provinces. The discussions centred on possible strategies to increase the arrival of Thai visitors through land borders.

Based on the 2025 statistics for Thai visitor arrivals to Malaysia, 91.6 per cent of the total 2.5 million arrivals were via land borders. This number is expected to increase through strategic collaboration between industry players and Tourism Malaysia in promoting and marketing bordering destinations and beyond.

This platform was also used to discuss and address issues concerning border tourism, such as the adherence to rules by land transport operators and enforcement by the Malaysian authorities.
