KUALA LUMPUR: The iconic Central Market was aglow with lanterns of all shapes and sizes following the launch of the Mid-Autumn Festival by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Thousands from all walks of life as well as tourists watched the activities lined up for the event. Businessman A. Thavandren, 36, said it had become a family tradition to attend the lantern festival every year. “This year's celebration is more happening than last year's as there seems to be more people joining in,” he said at the event last night.
Australian Rodney Newton, 46, said he was pleased to witness the celebration, especially since it was his first visit to Malaysia. “I'm lucky,” he said. “I managed to see how a multi-cultural society like Malaysia celebrates its festivals. The lantern festival is truly beautiful.”
Factory worker Jumin Mohd Jain, 28, who came to Kuala Lumpur from Sabah on a short break with his family, said their attendance was mere coincidence. “But it is a good way to spend time with my family,” he said. “My children love the lanterns.”
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen then led the lantern parade procession, which started from Central Market before meandering through Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Jalan Sultan, Jalan Hang Lekir and Jalan Petaling, where Chinatown is. A total of 5,000 lanterns, courtesy of the Taiwan Tourism Association, were distributed to visitors.
