SkyPark Terminal to serve 5 million passengers by 2020

SkyPark Terminal is the first airport in Malaysia to collaborate with Grab.

SUBANG: The SkyPark Terminal in Subang is expected to serve five million passengers by 2020 from the 3.1 million currently.

“The terminal is expected to be completed in 20 months and measure between 85,000 sq ft to 100,000 sq ft,” he told reporters at the signing ceremony of a four-year agreement between SkyPark and Grab, the ride hailing service, in Subang on Tuesday.

Ravindran said the agreement would make the commute for travellers from SkyPark Terminal to their preferred destinations more convenient.

“The agreement between both parties, results from a mutual aim to provide both business and leisure travellers with rides that are safe, reliable, convenient and cost-effective,” he added.

Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia head Jaygan Fu said the company planned to tap the SkyPark Terminal’s passenger numbers.

Trishaw a firm favourite in the old part of George Town

Iconic draw: Tourists walking past a row of trishaws lining the Swenttenham Pier entrance
as the ‘Mein Schiff I’ berths for the day in the background.

GEORGE TOWN: The modernity of planes and cars has not rendered obsolete that old port city feel of Penang.
People still love to visit by ship and when they get here, they still want to use the trishaws, an icon of the island.
A whopping 22 cruise ships will be calling on Swettenham Pier this month alone and it has become almost a daily sight to see fleets of trishaws lining the pier entrance.
Trishaw fleet owner Saw Chin Choon said tour companies organising day trips for the passengers would book up to about 100 trishaw trips from him when the ships arrive.
“We take the passengers to Khoo Kongsi or the Peranakan Mansion, anywhere in the heritage hub that the tour companies organise. It is usually a two-hour excursion. We take the passengers out three times a day,” he said.
Saw added that his riders were booked all the way until March.
A Penang Port Sdn Bhd spokesman said the pier would see between 80,000 and 100,000 cruise ship passengers and crew members in December alone.
He said yesterday that Mein Schiff I and Superstar Gemini came from Singapore with a total of almost 4,000 passengers and crew.
“Every week, four to five cruise ships are calling and this doesn’t include Superstar Libra and Amusement World, which have their homeport here,” he said.

Gabit Takes Crown, Malaysian Sweeps Asia Supermoto Podium

SHAH ALAM, MALAYSIA, 19 DECEMBER 2016 – The fourth and final round heard the roar of Malaysians as Muhd Habibullah (#27 Gabit) takes the FIM Asia Supermoto Championship 2016 for both Open International and Asian Class.
He is the first and only person to win at both classes against 21 top international riders from 18 countries. The Asian Class podium was followed by Khairi Zakaria (Hairi) and Mohd Al-Amirul Ashshahid (Gaban) who took the first and second runner-up respectively. A grand gala dinner was arranged after the race in celebration of the successful campaign.
Upon completion of four heated rounds in four countries across two regions namely Australia in September, Indonesia in October, the Philippines in November and Malaysia in December, Gabit said that the race played a significant role in elevating the industry’s standard. “Before the race was founded, it was tough to look for an avenue to compete internationally and expand our skills. While the local races and other small scaled regional races played a role in pushing the boundaries, competing on a global scale will open our eyes to skills, rivals and competition we have not encountered.”
“Riders from Asia has proven to be as competitive as other international riders. We believe that this championship will be the footstep for us to improve our skills and spearhead the Supermoto scene,” he added. Gabit concluded his winning speech with a chant of ‘Malaysia Boleh’.
Gabit completed the race with a best lap time of 53.496 against qualifying leader Richard Dibeen in a neck to neck battle for the title in the final race, with near to collision incidences happened at the final turn of the track. While it was disappointing for Gabit’s brother, Gaban, who ended his brawl earlier than expected due to machine malfunction at Race 2, Gabit surfed through the track with confidence, sweeping both titles at home ground. Gabit scored a total of 171 points standing at the Open International Class, followed by Australia’s Andrew McLiesh with 138 points, Malaysia’s Mohammad Khairi bin Zakaria with 123 points, Malaysia’s Mohd Al-Amirul Ashshahid (Gaban) with 112 points, New Zealand’s Richard Dibben with 108 points and Japan’s Takashi Sasaki with 87 points.
Satheswaran Mayachandran, CEO of Asia Supersports Group, a consortium of three companies namely Bikenation Motorsports Sdn Bhd, CW Media Sdn Bhd and E-Plus Entertainment Productions (M) Sdn Bhd, indicates that the race will continue to grow in the future. “Supermoto is an inclusive type of motorsport due to its versatility. Within a short duration, the championship has gained world recognition for its effort to promote the motorsport. Fans can expect a bigger race with more excitement in 2017. Finally, I would also like to congratulate all the riders and express my deepest gratitude to every host country, local promoters, sponsors, partners and the members of the media for their unwavering support and contribution.”
Datuk Zulkefli Hj Sharif, CEO of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), is pleased with the outcome of the championship. “The race has concluded with resounding success, and we have witnessed its looming potential in driving the economy of its host countries, especially Malaysia. This proves that the FIM Asia Supermoto Championship will be the next internationally recognised motorsport race, providing outcome on par with other well-established Grand Prix around the world.”
FIM Asia Supermoto Championship is organised by Asia Supersports Group, a consortium of three companies namely Bikenation Motorsports Sdn Bhd, CW Media Sdn Bhd and E-Plus Entertainment Productions (M) Sdn Bhd, with international supporters from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Malaysia Major Events, Selangor State Government, Shah Alam City Council, Concorde Hotel Shah Alam, Destination NSW, Tourism Hunter, Newcastle City Council, FIM Asia, Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM), KYT, KTM Malaysia,Premium World Motorsports (PWM) Sdn Bhd, official distributor of Husqvarna in Malaysia, RK South Asia Sdn Bhd, Liputan6.com, Bola.com, Vidio.com and iM4U.

Penang Hill needs cable car connection, says Nazri

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Hill is in dire need of a cable car connection and the Tourism and Culture Ministry has been applying for the RM325mil funds needed to build it.

"We have been applying since two years ago and we will keep putting it in the budget proposals until the Government has enough money for it," said Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz (pic).
He said the cable car was not only a tourist attraction but also a mode of transportation.
"It starts from the Penang Botanic Gardens. The first leg goes up to the hill and from there, passengers can take another cable car to Teluk Bahang.
"It will be faster than driving," said Nazri, adding that the planned cable car station in Teluk Bahang will be located close to the Escape theme park and Entopia, formerly Penang Butterfly Farm.
Mohd Nazri said the number of visitors to Penang Hill has increased from 200,000 in 2008 to 1.6 million this year.
"We know how badly the cable car is needed.
"It only depends on Government income. Sooner or later, the price of oil will go up again and we will have the budget for it."
Nazri was speaking to reporters after opening THE TOP@Komtar.
The rejuvenation of this 31-year-old landmark icon now includes an observatory deck on Level 65 and a glass skywalk in the new rooftop on Level 68, on top of a myriad of carnival attractions in Level Five that is accessible through Komtar's Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong side.
"This old building has gone through an amazing transformation. We are listing Komtar now as a must-visit place in all our promotional literature of Penang," he said.
Komtar underwent a revitalisation programme after Only World Group, a listed company specialising in building theme parks and tourism attractions, won a 45-year lease of about 300,000 sq ft of floor space in the building.
Also at the launching were Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and several local government leaders and businessmen.

FIM Asia Supermoto Race Report: Hodgson Tops Qualifying

SHAH ALAM, MALAYSIA, 17 DECEMBER 2016 – When it was announced that the 11-time UK Supermoto Champion, Chris Hodgson, will again race in Malaysia, fans looked forward to a master class display of supermoto riding skills. Then when Hodgson’s compatriot, Lewis Cornish confirmed his participation as well, fans knew sparks were going to fly.
The track hewn from the grounds next to the imposing Stadium Shah Alam covers a large area and consists of two long straights, so much so the course marshals set up multiple chicanes in order to keep top speeds down. That had also in effect made the track more balanced to keep some of the more powerful bikes from walking away from the rest of the field, and in essence, turning proceedings over to rider skill and bike setup.
The weather had stayed blazing hot up to mid-afternoon when the heavens opened up for a brief shower. Fortunately, the hot tarmac dried quickly and the dirt section stayed open.
Hodgson had been fast from the get-go as he adapted to the track quickly, “ASG plus the FIM Asia organized a great event. I found the track suited my riding immediately.” He had posted the fastest time of 54.310s in the first Free Practice, then knocked off 0.5s to record 53.833s in the second Free Practice session, pared off another 0.8s to record 52.998s in Qualifying before ultimately dropping under the 52s mark by turning in a blistering 51.163s.
Lewis Cornish had been riding limited number of laps throughout every session. Long-time obeserbers noticed that he had been riding conservatively compared to his usual hard-charging, no-holds barred style. He could have ended in Pole Position but it didn’t transpire. “We’ve had a few problems today that we’ll need to sort out. The bike is going to Kenny’s (the team owner) workshop tonight to work on the front brake. We’re very hopeful for tomorrow,” said a positive Cornish.
Richard Dibben came back from a heartbreaking DNS (Did Not Start) in Round 3 to claim the third fastest time, but not without some drama. He crashed in Qualifying and Super Chrono, but suffered no motorcycle and physical damage, thankfully. He posted 53.498s in Qualifying then rode steadily during Super Chrono, settling on conservative 53.628s.
In fourth after Super Chrono was Andy McLiesh, the overall winner of Round 3 in the Philippines. Fast as he was, he didn’t seem to be fully comfortable. He had been fifth after Qualifying, recording a time of 54.029s, before pushing to post his fastest lap of 53.833s in Super Chrono. “It’s been a tough day. Lots of chicanes and we’re not used to the tight stuff, but we made up some time in Super Chrono. But raceday would be different with many variables that could come into play. We look forward to a good start tomorrow and go from there,” said McLiesh.
Open International and Asian classes points leader Muhd. Habibullah Saleh, better known as Gabit, needs to cross the finish line in third in both Motos in order to seal the championship in tomorrow’s race. Circulating as fast as he could, he only found himself fifth fastest, stopping the stopwatch at 54.147s in Super Chrono. He had recorded his fastest lap of 54.131s in Qualifying. “I’ve rode as fast as I could but couldn’t go any faster,” said Gabit. “I’ll have to see what we can do tomorrow to secure the championship. Riding too hard isn’t part of the game plan but we’ll play be ear. I’m not feeling any pressure ahead of tomorrow.”
Khairi Zakaria had also been pushing hard through the weekend but had to start in sixth. He had actually qualified as high as fourth in the earlier Qualifying session with his best time of 53.944s, then mysteriously dropping almost two seconds to finish Super Chrono in sixth, with a fastest time of 55.233s. “My left boot’s slider got partly sheared off and kept getting caught on the footpeg. I had so much trouble moving the foot and shifting gears. There wasn’t enough time to stop and fix it, so I lost time,” said a visibly dejected Khairi.
FIM Asia Supermoto Championship is organised by Asia Supersports Group, a consortium of three companies namely Bikenation Motorsports Sdn Bhd, CW Media Sdn Bhd and E-Plus Entertainment Productions (M) Sdn Bhd, with international supporters from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Malaysia Major Events, Selangor State Government, Shah Alam City Council, Concorde Hotel Shah Alam, Destination NSW, Tourism Hunter, Newcastle City Council, FIM Asia, Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM), KYT, KTM Malaysia, Premium World Motorsports (PWM) Sdn Bhd, official distributor of Husqvarna in Malaysia, RK South Asia Sdn Bhd, Liputan6.com, Bola.com, Vidio.com and iM4U.

Global Muslim travel market worth US$138 billion and growing

Muslim travel contributed over US$138 billion to global GDP in 2015 and accounts for more than 10 per cent of tourism spend worldwide, according to the inaugural Global Economic Impact of Muslim Tourism Report 2015 by Salam Standard.

“To put this into perspective, the GDP impact is larger than the entire economy of Morocco or Kuwait,” said the report’s author, Faeez Fadhlillah, co-founder and CEO of Salam Standard and sister firm, Tripfez.

The US and EU emerged as top beneficiaries of Muslim travel spending, netting nearly US$64 billion of inbound expenditure in 2015, or around 44 per cent of the total. They also collect the most Muslim tourist-related tax - to the tune of US$12.5 billion, according to the report.

In terms of tourism spend overseas, the Middle East leads the pack to account for 60 per cent of all outbound Muslim tourism expenditure, worth some US$60 billion. The region also accrues the largest share of their tourism GDP from Muslim travellers (28 per cent).

Asia and Europe are the second largest markets in terms of outbound Muslim travel expenditure, each generating around 20 per cent of total spend.

In terms of direct employment, Thailand is the largest beneficiary, with more than a quarter of a million jobs supported by the Muslim travel sector. And overall, Asia has more than 2.3 million people employed in this sector, surpassing other regions.

Looking ahead, Fadhlillah said: “The sector is expected to grow by 50 per cent in volume and 35 per cent in value over the next five years, but its potential is yet to be unlocked.

“We advise governments and tourism entities in key markets worldwide to put strategies in place that will foster the growth of their Muslim travel sectors and drive demand that will benefit their economies immeasurably.”

Salam Standard, launched in October last year, is an online reference tool for Muslim travellers that categorises hotels according to their adherence to Muslim-friendly standards.
