Tasik Chini's research centre now open to visitors

PEKAN: Visitors, especially nature lovers, can now make plans to visit the country's first biosphere reserve site Tasik Chini which was once marred by long-standing environmental issues.

The Tasik Chini Research Centre (PPTC) near here offers tailored edutourism packages for the public to stay at their premises within the complex vicinity and explore the lake, and its rich flora and fauna.

State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said the negative perception about mining activities around the country's second-largest freshwater lake had to be put aside with the focus now towards getting people to return to enjoy the rich biodiversity here.

"PPTC is prepared to receive visitors, including tour groups, to explore the lake and the nearby Orang Asli settlements.

"The lake is an ideal edutourism site to attract students and researchers.

"Tour and travel agents can include Tasik Chini in their packages when promoting Pahang.

"Apart from offering accommodation, meals and camping facilities for outdoor enthusiasts, PPTC provides boating, kayaking, and jungle trekking activities depending on the length of stay," she said at PPTC here today.

Leong was met after the closing of the engagement sessions programme by Pahang State Parks Corporation to prepare the Tasik Chini biosphere reserve development plan.

Also present was Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Tasik Chini Research Centre head Associate Professor Dr Mohd Shazrul Fazry Sa`ariwijaya.

Leong said that Tasik Chini had made headlines previously for the wrong reasons due to unregulated mining and land-clearing activities but now the surrounding areas were being restored and rehabilitated.

"The mining has stopped so we hope there will be continues efforts to promote the lake.

"We cannot just sit back and wait for the Tasik Chini action plan to be implemented but must make effort to ensure the lake remains popular among visitors and is not forgotten," she said.

On the engagement sessions, Leong said the three-day programme involved 18 agencies and four Orang Asli settlements nearby with the aim to return the lake to its former glory.

"The Pahang government has pledged its support on efforts to revive the lake, and having a long- and short-term action plan is the best way to move forward.

"The findings from the sessions will be studied before we develop a comprehensive plan by the end of this year," she said.

Malaysia extends visa exemption for Chinese travellers

Malaysian leadership announced an extended visa exemption for Chinese travellers until end of 2026 during Chinese premier Li Qiang’s recent three-day official visit to Malaysia.

The 30-day visa exemption was first announced by Malaysia prime minister Anwar Ibrahim in November 2023, and it came into effect on December 1.

In May this year, China had agreed to extend its visa-free policy for Malaysian tourists until the end of 2025 and the visa-free duration per trip had also been extended from 15 to 30 days.

Anwar and Li said in a joint statement that they welcomed the keen interest in continuing consultations and discussions on mutual visa exemptions to facilitate the entry of Malaysian and Chinese citizens.

Uzaidi Udanis, chairman of the Consortium of Inbound Tourism Alliance, opined that the visa exemption for Chinese travellers to Malaysia as well as Malaysians travelling to China, will allow the travel trade from Malaysia and China to continue with their campaigns and promotions to attract quality tourists and niche segments such as business travellers from both countries.

He shared: “It is also a timely announcement by the Malaysian prime minister as Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. It will encourage more Chinese travellers to visit Malaysia and help the country achieve its target of 35.6 million tourists and target receipts of RM147.1 billion (US$31.2 billion).

“China is very important market as it is the top medium-haul inbound market in terms of number of tourists. Also, with this latest announcement, it will encourage airlines (based in) Malaysia and China to improve their connectivity and frequencies between Malaysia and China.”

Tourism Malaysia sets target of 220 million tourists

photo: Tourism Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA: Tourism Malaysia is making efforts to promote domestic travel, achieving 25% of the target of 220 million tourists in the first quarter of this year, says Tourism Malaysia director-general Manoharan Periasamy.

He said for this year, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry had set a target of 220 million domestic visitors with a total spending of RM88bil.

“To ensure we meet this target, we will intensify promotional activities to reach all segments of society.

“In the first quarter, we reached nearly 25% of our target. We are seeing a trend of locals visiting tourist attractions in Malaysia. We hope to achieve our target of 220 million,” he said after launching the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia Madani Civil Servants 2024 exhibition at Alamanda Shopping Centre, Putrajaya.

“People are expressing interest in travelling overseas, so they often choose neighbouring countries like (Thailand’s) Haadyai. But given our current currency situation, it’s much more beneficial to take holidays within the country.

“Sometimes people say RM500 can buy many things in Thailand, but in terms of value, you can get much more in Malaysia,” he added.

According to Manoharan, Tourism Malaysia is taking steps aligned with the strategic direction of the domestic tourism sector to increase domestic tourism arrivals, promote inter-state travel, and encourage planned holidays.

He pointed out that Malaysians have many places to visit and enjoy a vacation. Domestic tourists like to explore new, previously unexplored places.

“For example, places like Gopeng and various glamping sites are popular destinations among young people, especially Generation Z and Generation Y. They enjoy more adventurous activities, like sleeping in glamping sites,” he added.

The Cuti-Cuti Malaysia Madani Civil Servants 2024 exhibition is one of Tourism Malaysia’s efforts to encourage domestic travel. The event, first held in Putrajaya, offers a 30% discount on travel packages.

Manoharan said the exhibition’s special tourism packages are not only limited to civil servants but are also open to the general public and all visitors.

He added the exhibition would be held in other states as well.

“This is a good opportunity for locals because airlines are participating. If you want to island-hop within the country, visit Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak, this is a chance to enjoy the 30% discount offered by the airlines,” he added.

The exhibition runs from June 7 to June 9, 2024. This time, 25 industry players have been selected to join Tourism Malaysia in offering various discounted travel packages and theme park tickets, with discounts of up to 30%.

Among the packages offered are the KTMB Duo Package, holiday packages to islands like Redang, Kapas, Perhentian, Lang Tengah, Tioman, and Mabul, as well as glamping, homestay, and accommodations at hotels and resorts.

Ab Rauf berkata, sejak Januari lalu, Melaka menerima seramai 5.7 juta pelancong, lonjakan sebanyak 30 peratus susulan sambutan TMM 2024 berbanding tempoh sama tahun sebelumnya.
