Pelanjutan Pengecualian Pembayaran Fi Lesen Bagi Pengusaha-Pengusaha Pelancongan Dan Pemandu Pelancong Yang Dilesenkan Di Bawah Akta Industri Pelancongan 1992 [Akta 482]

Tioman's scuba diving event 'Start In Tioman' begins tomorrow

KUANTAN: Pulau Tioman's premier scuba diving event 'Start In Tioman (SIT)' will return tomorrow.

The four-day event from June 30 to July 3 at Kampung Genting is expected to attract some 150 dive enthusiasts including 40 newbies who are planning to obtain their scuba diving certification.

Tioman Development Authority (TDA) general manager Datuk Idros Yahya said the last two editions in 2020 and last year saw a limited number of participants due to the pandemic and travel restrictions.

"This year's event will see between 150 and 200 dive enthusiasts, including 40 who will obtain their scuba diving licence. Another 60 are divers who have already obtained their open water diving licence.

"Some divers want to obtain further certification to become advanced divers in various fields including night diving, technical diving or shipwreck diving. After more than 10 editions, SIT has become a popular annual event among diving enthusiasts," he said when contacted.

Idros said non-divers will have the opportunity to go for snorkelling, jungle trekking or hiking to the waterfall, participating in beach clean-ups or take part in other activities on the island.

"SIT is among the efforts to promote domestic tourism and support the safe return of international tourism. Visitors can either choose to travel by ferry or take the recently introduced direct flights from Subang to the island," he said.

Tourism Malaysia Bids Mabuhay At The Philippines Travel Agencies Association Travel Tour Expo 2022

MANILA, 28 June 2022 – Tourism Malaysia’s delegation to the 29th Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) Travel Tour Expo (TTE) 2022 this year comes with a mission to promote Malaysia as a top destination for Filipino travellers.

Held at SMX Convention Centre, Manila from 24th to 26th June 2022, joining the Malaysian delegation are representatives from Ormond Hotel, Kuala Lumpur and Agro Best Services Sdn Bhd. PTAA’s Travel Tour Expo has remained the biggest annual travel and tourism event in the Philippines. In 2020, at least 400 tourism stakeholders including national tourism organisations (NTO) participated in the event, attracting at least 135,000 visitors.

Malaysia’s booth was officiated by H.E. Norman Mohamad, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Philippines. For the record, the Philippine market remains among the top ten contributors in terms of tourist arrivals to Malaysia. Malaysia recorded 421,908 arrivals from the Philippines in 2019.

Malaysia has opened its shores for quarantine-free travel to welcome fully-vaccinated international travellers. Fully-vaccinated inbound travellers no longer need to undergo pre-departure and on-arrival COVID-19 tests, including children aged 17 and below. Travel insurance is also not a prerequisite for foreigners entering the country.

MATFA appeals for entertainment tax exemption for theme parks

visual: MATFA

The Malaysian Association of Themepark & Family Attractions (MATFA) has requested a five-year exemption on the 25 per cent entertainment tax, while working on a complete exclusion with the government concurrently so that the industry can attract investors.

MATFA’s president, Richard Koh, shared that the current exemption on entertainment duty for entertainment activities until the end of this year only applies to Federal Territories such as Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

Koh pointed out that theme parks located outside of the Federal Territories – in the states of Pahang, Johor, Perak, Selangor and Pahang – are unable to benefit from the exemption.

On top of the 25 per cent entertainment tax, theme park operators also have to pay an additional 35 per cent tax for importing theme park-related equipment.

Koh lamented: “Malaysia cannot realise its dreams of becoming a theme park capital in South-east Asia, as our regional peers do not have punitive entertainment tax. Countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Australia do not impose entertainment taxes.”

He added that theme parks are “capital intensive investments”, where returns “go through a long gestation period” before managing to break even.

Koh further pointed out that theme parks and family attractions were under the purview of the Entertainment Duty Act 1953, which he described as “archaic and outdated”.

He opined that the Act, introduced by the British during their rule in pre-independence, should be reviewed as it is strongly anchored to the idea of entertainment being equivalent to a ‘sin-tax’ and was usually applied to cabaret dancing, casinos, boxing and strip shows.

The family entertainment centres of today are “far removed from such elements”, he declared. “Theme parks and family entertainment centres came under the purview not by design but by default when the government, when deciding what to slap on the industry, had only this in hand.”

Koh recommended that the Malaysian government classify theme parks and family entertainment centres under the recreational category – similar to zoos, museums, skating rinks and swimming pool complexes.

Kerajaan tumpu usaha bantu promosi perniagaan inap desa

South Korea's Air Busan returns to Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: South Koreans are back to visiting Sabah following the resumption of Air Busan's direct flights from its capital, Seoul.

Air Busan is the second Korean-based low-cost airline returning to Kota Kinabalu after the Covid-19 pandemic, yesterday, following Jin Air on May 26.

The Air Busan BX 767 flight took off from Incheon International Airport carrying 196 passengers.

It landed at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) at 11.10pm and its arrival was celebrated with a water cannon salute.

Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said: "The Koreans' willingness and confidence to return to Sabah is a great sign for us.

"While we want to promote Sabah to international visitors, we also want to encourage locals to take advantage of this direct flight and explore Korea."

Joniston, who is also Sabah Tourism Board chairman, along with its chief executive officer, Noredah Othman, and KKIA senior airport manager Sunif Naiman greeted the passengers disembarking from the aircraft with souvenirs courtesy of Sabah Tourism.

Air Busan currently operates twice weekly flights to Kota Kinabalu, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Another Korean low-cost airline, Jeju Air, is expected to resume direct flights to Sabah on June 29.

For now, all three airlines will depart via Incheon.

The resumption of the Sabah-South Korea route was made possible after Joniston and Noredah visited Seoul in early May to meet top officials of Jin Air, Air Busan, Jeju Air and several other Korean airlines.

They also held a meeting with two top Korean travel companies, Mode Tour and Hana Tour.

Ministry increases this year's tourist arrival target to 4.5 million

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry is targeting the arrival of 4.5 million tourists to Malaysia this year and a revenue of RM11.1 billion.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said this was more than the initial target of two million tourists, and it was based on the reopening of tourism activities nationwide, increase in vaccination rates and reopening of national borders since April 1 this year.

"In April, 567,299 international arrivals were registered, followed by 1.03 million in May and as of June 17, 773,925 tourists were recorded, making it a total of 2.38 million people arriving here especially from India, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

"So, the total target of two million visitors (which the ministry estimated) in April 2022 was based on optimism. In September, we will revise this target to 4.5 million as international arrivals are currently showing good momentum," she said after the launch of the Tourism Rehabilitation Framework (TRF) 2.0.

Nancy said, according to the Statistics Department (DOSM), services sector revenues increased by 10.4 per cent, with a value of RM473 billion in the first quarter of 2022.

"This growth was driven by the expansion of the wholesale and retail trade, food and beverage, accommodation, arts, entertainment and recreation sub-sectors."

Nancy said in order for the recovery momentum to continue, and for Malaysia to achieve resilience in its tourism industry, her ministry and industry players, through Tourism Productivity Nexus (TPN), had improved recovery plans to become the TRF 2.0.

This framework is in line with the strategies under the National Tourism Policy 2020-2030.

"TRF2.0 is no longer focused on the survivability and reopening of tourism activities.

"The focus will be on increasing national income, promoting smart international and national cooperation, empowering local communities, strengthening resilience and ensuring the sustainability of the country's tourism industry in the face of future uncertainties," she said.

There are five pillars in TRF 2.0. They are: supporting the recovery of tourism and cultural businesses; restoring tourist confidence and well-ordered international and intra-regional travel; re-inventing tourism and cultural products or services to enhance competitiveness; coordinating tourism with sustainability and inclusiveness; and, the reinforcement of recovery long-term resilience and crisis preparedness.

Nancy said until May this year, up to RM30 million in financial aid and vouchers had been disbursed to boost domestic tourism.

"As of May, the ministry has given RM23.8 million to more than 15,000 travel companies, RM4.73 million worth of vouchers were redeemed to buy handicrafts, visual arts and books to help entrepreneurs and cultural industry activists, as well as RM2.35 million worth of vouchers were offered for tourism and land transport packages.

"As of June 15, 342 applications worth RM1.64 million were granted for homestay restorations, while 43 applications with a total value of RM886,000 were approved for budget hotels," she said.

Nancy said she hoped TRF 2.0 would drive the tourism sector back to recovery.

She said close cooperation between industry players, local communities, non-governmental organisations and the government was important to achieve the goals and address the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic to create a viable and resilient tourism industry.

"I also hope that this will encourage people to spend and travel, as well as contribute to the national economy.

"At the same time, we expect the impact of inflation to be reduced on the purchasing power of the people. This is important as food inflation was recorded at 4.1 per cent in April 2022."

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah's tourism recovery efforts are showing signs of success with a growing number of direct international and domestic flights flying to the state.

State Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said international connectivity was making great Sabah accessible within the Southeast Asia region.

"I am pleased to announce that our domestic connection is expanding, with 389 weekly flights now available since the interstate travel ban was lifted late last year and international borders reopened in April this year.

"There were 445 weekly flights before the pandemic.

"Sabah has welcomed five direct international flights and we will receive two more direct flights from Incheon, South Korea, to Kota Kinabalu next week.

"We are also expecting the Bangkok-Kota Kinabalu direct flight to resume. This is indeed an extremely positive scene for the Sabah tourism industry."

He said this at the launch of the two-day Bazaar Matta at Sunway Velocity Mall here today.

Present were Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president Datuk Tan Kok Liang, Tourism Malaysia's domestic and events senior director Iskandar Mirza Mohd Yusof and Sabah Tourism Board chief marketing officer Tay Shu Lan., among others.

Airlines operating direct flights to Kota Kinabalu are Air Asia (via Manila and Singapore), Scoot (via Singapore), Royal Brunei Airlines (via Brunei) and Jin Air (via Incheon).

For domestic travel, Kota Kinabalu has direct flights from Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu, Penang, Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur.

Sandakan and Tawau are also accessible from Kuala Lumpur.

There has also been a growth in domestic and foreign visitors to Sabah, with 408,530 arrivals between January and April.

These include 392,968 domestic tourists and 15,562 foreign tourists.

"This estimate represents a 412 per cent increase over the same period last year.

"For us, this is a promising indicator of people's desire to return to Sabah, to travel and discover new places," said Joniston, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board.

He commended Matta for hosting the event and for highlighting Sabah.

"Even though the Bazaar Matta is a smaller travel fair than the usual Matta Fair, the fact that 30 travel agents are taking part this weekend is a good sign that the event is just as important.

"Sabah packages were in high demand at recent travel exhibitions.

"On that note, Sabah Tourism Board encourages visitors to always use licensed travel agents when booking and arranging vacations."

At the bazaar, Sabah will promote and sell domestic travel and tourism packages with prizes to be won, including flight tickets to Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, and Sandakan.

Visitors are entitled to RM100 Boost vouchers.

Tan said the bazaar was Matta's pilot project, adding that it would highlight other states by bringing in travel agents to boost domestic travel.

"We are highlighting Sabah first because tourism is one of its key sectors. There has been an increasing demand for Sabah and its rural destinations."

Sabah sharpens outfit to advance medical tourism

A plan is in the works to establish Sabah Health and Wellness Tourism Council (SHWTC) to market Sabah as a destination for medical tourism.

The pro-tem committee led by Anil Kumar met with the assistant minister of tourism, culture, and environment Joniston Bangkuai on June 13 to discuss the formation of SHWTC. The latter, who chairs the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), has been invited to be the advisor of the Council.

Sabah’s tourism leaders convened on June 13 to discuss the development of medical tourism

Anil said SHWTC will act as a one-stop centre for all matters related to the health paradigm.

“The council aims to provide impetus and focus to place Sabah health and wellness tourism on the world stage,” he said, adding that the state already has the required infrastructures and facilities.

He added that medical tourism will be a “new market” for the state, and will generate “high revenue”.

“We want to collaborate with STB on how we can effectively advertise this area and attract people from neighbouring countries, particularly the BIMP-EAGA region, to seek health and wellness treatment in Sabah,” said Anil.

Joniston gave assurance that the STB would work closely with members of the local medical community to make Sabah a choice of destination for healthcare tourism.

He shared: “Other states, like Penang and Malacca, already have their state healthcare tourism councils, so this move is timely. Accordingly, this is also in line with STB’s efforts to attract high-end travellers.

“We’ve had success in other sectors of tourism, such as rural tourism, and there’s no reason why Sabah can’t do the same in medical tourism.”

Joniston added: “We must work closely together to achieve the goal, develop strategic plans to promote health care services here, and look at prospective target markets, especially when Nusantara (on Borneo island, where Sabah state is also located) is set to become Indonesia’s new capital.”

Joniston suggested that SHWTC consider including representatives from relevant government and private agencies as members.

Meanwhile, Noredah Othman, STB’s CEO, mentioned that the NTO has started promoting medical tourism through the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council.

Nevertheless, she stated that STB was prepared to get on board with SHWTC to exchange experience and skills to develop a viable package for medical tourism in the state.

“It is essential to have local medical practitioners who can educate our stakeholders, such as hoteliers and tour operators, on the various healthcare options that are available to tourists.

“STB will be happy to collaborate with SHTWC to conduct a workshop for tourism players to increase their awareness on the offerings for medical tourism in the State,” she said.
