Ng: Tourism not at cost to environment

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian tourism must continue improving on its pricing; quality of services, accessibility to the world and strategies for tourism products.
This is needed to maintain, or even improve the country's position as one of the world's 10 most visited countries, said
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

“Tourism is a fragile, vulnerable industry. Changes in the world's environment, whether climatic or political will have detrimental effects to global tourism. “We must play our role to ensure tourism does not adversely affect, but instead helps to address the issue,” she said at the Malaysian Tourism Award ceremony 2011 yesterday.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Haminah Hamidun also graced the event.

Dr Ng urged industry players to practise sustainable Green Tourism in an effort to grow the industry without sacrificing nature, culture nor heritage. The tourism industry was now the country's fifth largest industry, providing over one million jobs and contributing 10% to the nation's gross domestic product (GDP). A total of 39 individuals and companies were presented with awards for this year.

At the ceremony, Dr Ng gave out 11 awards in three categories, including best tour operator and innovative international tour operator. Food ambassador
Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, popularly known as Chef Wan, and internationally-acclaimed shoe designer Prof Datuk Jimmy Choo were awarded the Tourism Ministry's Special Awards for promoting Malaysia abroad.
