KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit will be sporting a new look, and the RM20 note is making a comeback after last being issued in 1982. The new fourth series bank notes, except for the RM50 note which was given a makeover in 2007 in conjunction with the 50th Merdeka celebration, will be in circulation from the second half of 2012.
Themed “Distinctively Malaysia”, the new currency series was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday. The rarely seen second series RM20 note was never demonetised, but it was not reissued in the third series. Joining the newly launched orange RM20 note are RM1 in blue, RM5 in green, RM10 in red, RM50 in green-blue and RM100 in purple. All the denominations retain the portrait of the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Tuanku Muhammad, the bunga raya and songket patterns.
Collectors will be happy to know that Bank Negara is issuing commemorative notes to mark the introduction of the new series. Priced at RM15, RM30 and RM300 respectively, the collections can be purchased at Bank Negara Malaysia's headquarters and branches in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuala Terengganu, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu from today.
