Upin & Ipin theme park to be developed in Cyberjaya
KUALA LUMPUR: Fans of Upin & Ipin will be thrilled to learn that a theme park based on the popular animation series be built in Cyberjaya.
In a press statement recently, Les' Copaque Production and the tech hub developer of Cyberjaya, Cyberview Sdn Bhd and have agreed to discuss further in exploring the development of the theme park there.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed to allow both parties to evaluate the development of the interactive theme park, which will be the first-of-its kind to be established there.
A land area of about 30 acres in the South Zone of Cyberjaya has been identified as a possible location for the theme park.
The proposed development will be set against a uniquely traditional backdrop, featuring exclusive IPs from Les' Copaque, led by the studio's award-winning animation icons, Upin & Ipin, along with other popular IPs such as Puteri and Pada Zaman Dahulu.
The park is set to offer both local and international fans immersive and experiential attractions through various interactive contents that are thematically designed, such as 'Rumah Opah' in an interactive studio, an Upin & Ipin interactive park, and an outdoor fun park.
Other key components will include a Mystical Tunnel, Pada Zaman Dahulu Green House and an Outdoor Maze Garden, a 4D Interactive cinema as well as a Warong Muthu-themed food court.
"Upin & Ipin theme park at Cyberjaya will be the pride of Malaysians, as it is a popular locally produced brand which we hope will be at par with other international theme parks.
"Upin & Ipin will not only attract Malaysians, but the whole South East Asia, especially among its huge followings in Indonesia.
"This will directly boost our tourism industry, apart from creating job and other opportunities for Malaysians," said Les' Copaque Production's managing director Burhanuddin Md Radzi.
The choice of Cyberjaya as the location for the theme park is apt, given the city's strategic location and long-standing support in nurturing the animation industry and content creation among local players.
In 2019, Cyberjaya strengthened its commitment to the creative industry when Cyberview unveiled a new masterplan which is anchored by three tech clusters, including a cluster dedicated to digital creative.
"This theme park will effectively bridge between the animation industry and fans through an on-the-ground experience.
"With our focus on digital creative, the theme park is a piece of the puzzle that fits perfectly, directly bringing ancillary commercial value to local IPs, while further encouraging the participation of local talents in the creative content industry," said Cyberview managing director Datuk Mohd Najib Ibrahim.
The Upin & Ipin theme park is targeted to be ready either by 2024 or the following year, with about 2 million visits projected annually from local and international fans.

Sabah welcomes its first full planeload of Korean tourists
KOTA KINABALU: Incheon-based Korean airline Jin Air saw a full planeload of passengers arriving in the state capital here last night, the first after Covid-19 all but wiped out flights with the East Asian nation.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the full flight was a positive indicator that Koreans are returning to spend their holidays here.
The flight carrying 185 passengers on board, including Jin Air branch manager Park Jeong Hoon, touched down at Kota Kinabalu International Airport at 10.45 pm and was given a water cannon salute.
Jafry, who welcomed the visitors with goodie bags, said they are confident that with the improved Covid-19 situation, Koreans would want to come to the state as they did in the past.
"Before the pandemic, we had 65 flights weekly from Korean cities to Sabah.
"We hope this circumstance will return and we look forward to (receiving tourists from) other destinations.
"Sabah will work together with (the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry) to boost visitor arrivals, which in return will have a positive economic impact on the local community."
The South Korean low-cost carrier with twice-weekly flights on Thursday and Sunday is the third foreign airline to resume direct flights to Kota Kinabalu after Singapore's Scoot and Royal Brunei Airlines.
Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Santhara Kumar Ramanaidu congratulated Sabah on its strong tourism development.
He said the ministry would continue to collaborate with the Sabah Tourism Board to promote Sabah and its new products to the Korean market.
"In 2019, we had over 600,000 Koreans visiting Malaysia with about 390,000 of them making their way to Sabah.
"This is an indication that Kota Kinabalu is an essential destination," he said.
Also present was state Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; state Tourism Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Yusrie Abdullah; Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer Noredah Othman and chief marketing officer Tay Shu Lan.

Malaysia anticipates stronger Indian summer performance this year
Amritha: the weak ringgit against the US dollar is an added advantage |
Inbound players across Malaysia are seeing a more encouraging summer travel season for Indian travellers, with forward bookings showing reduced price sensitivity and a return of both FIT and corporate incentive interest.
India is among the top five tourism source markets for Malaysia.
Despite higher airfares as a result of limited air capacity, A Aruldas, managing director of Tourland Travel, said demand has been “encouraging” ever since the start of the Indian summer holidays. He noted that Kuala Lumpur, Genting and Langkawi remain hot favourites among his Indian customers.
Tourland Travel has also just completed an incentive travel group from India – a 220-pax event hosted by a travel insurance company. The group visited Kuala Lumpur, Genting and Port Dickson.
Comparing this Indian summer season with pre-pandemic times, Amritha Dijith, CEO, Apollo Asia Travel Group, said there is now a larger FIT segment. This year, 90 per cent of the agency’s Indian customers are FITs, while pre-pandemic there was a more balanced split between FITs and group travellers, with the latter making up around 40 per cent of the company’s clientele.
Amritha also gladly noted that Indian travellers were also not as price sensitive as they used to be.
“The weak ringgit against the US dollar is an added advantage, as most B2B agents quote their packages in US dollars,” she added.
Indeed, despite many travel agents raising their package rates this year due to escalating operating costs, Ganneesh Ramaa, vice-president, Destination Explore, said Malaysia remains an affordable and attractive destination for Indian travellers.
Thus far, forward bookings are looking promising for Destination Explore. Ganneesh recalled that his agent partners in India had responded positively to news of Malaysia’s reopening and the removal of pre-departure and on-arrival Covid-19 tests and quarantine requirements.
However, for Malaysia to rebuild Indian travel demand, Ganneesh said air capacity and frequency of flights must improve, while the process of obtaining a visa should be shortened to 24 hours and fees lowered. Meanwhile, he also urged authorities to address the challenge of manpower shortages at hotels and restaurants in Malaysia.
The lengthy visa processing time, which could take several days, has resulted in two FIT tour booking cancellations for MVT Travel. Managing director V Kunaseelan said individuals could not get their visa on time, which is a problem since travellers from India tend to book very last minute.
To reengage this critical source market, Tourism Malaysia recently led a delegation of 15 tour operators, three hoteliers, three product owners and three airlines to South Asia’s Travel & Tourism Exchange, commonly known in the trade as SATTE.

Malaysia’s Tourism Roadshow Is Coming To Saudi Arabia
PUTRAJAYA, 21 May 2022 – Tourism Malaysia is organising a series of roadshows in the Middle East to woo international tourists to Malaysia in conjunction with the country’s border reopening on 1 April 2022. This time around, the roadshow will kick off from 21 to 29 May 2022 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – the cities of Damman, Riyadh, and Jeddah.
Headed by Dato’ Seri Ramlan Ibrahim, Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, the delegation consists of travel agents, hoteliers, product owners, state tourism bodies, and medical tourism industry players. The mission is to attract more international tourists, newcomers and regulars alike, to further boost the economy for a strong rebound in the tourism industry.
Saudi Arabia’s market contributes the highest per capita expenditure in terms of tourist spending reaching RM11,660 (USD 2,673) and the average length of stay (10.8 nights) before the COVID-19 pandemic.
This roadshow provides the platform for networking with travel trade partners and the opportunity to develop new sales partnerships besides providing product updates on Malaysia, including the brand new Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park, the world’s second tallest skyscraper Merdeka 118, and the Sunway Resort in Kuala Lumpur that just reopened after a once-in-a-generation transformation.
Dato’ Seri Ramlan said: “We are thrilled to welcome more Arab tourists to Malaysia. Malaysia’s relationship with Saudi Arabia has long been amicable. Hence, this roadshow aims to promote Malaysia as a top-of-mind tourist destination for the West Asian market.
“Not only Saudi Arabia and Malaysia are well connected with direct flights via Saudia and Malaysia Airlines, but Malaysia is also a safe and family-friendly holiday destination plus a shopping heaven and halal food paradise.”
Starting 1 May 2022, fully-vaccinated inbound travellers are no longer required to undergo pre-departure and on-arrival COVID-19 tests, including children aged 12 and below as well as for those who have been infected with COVID-19 within six to 60 days before departure to Malaysia. Travel insurance is also not a prerequisite for foreigners entering the country.
The wearing of masks outdoors is optional but still mandatory indoors, including in shopping malls, offices, public transportation and e-hailing rides.

Malaysia considers motorhome tourism development
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia is working with the local government and relevant ministries to develop motor homes as a new tourism product.
This new venture came about after getting feedback at the recent Arabian Travel Market that the availability of self-drive motorhomes will attract young families from West Asia to go beyond traditional destinations of Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Genting.
Its minister, Nancy Shukri, shared that her ministry will work closely with the Transport Ministry and local councils of every state to develop the required infrastructure before promoting motor homes as a new tourism product.
A pilot project will be initiated in Johor before it is rolled out to other states in the country.
Tourism Malaysia had also received positive feedback from overseas travel trade at the recently concluded Arabian Travel Market. Nancy said the country continues to be a preferred destination as the government has made entry requirements simple by removing Covid-19 testing and quarantine requirements.
Agents from the Middle East had also highlighted the need for additional direct flights and frequencies from West Asia to Kuala Lumpur, she added.
Towards this end, Tourism Malaysia had signed a memorandum of understanding with Emirates Airline to increase air connectivity to Malaysia, and to promote Malaysia as a unique travel destination. There will also be joint activities to drive tourism recovery.
Nancy was speaking at a press conference after launching the Domestic Tourism Recovery Plan 2022 and the revamped version of the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia (Holiday in Malaysia) song in an effort to boost domestic tourism, which local industry players are banking on this year while waiting for international tourism to return to normalcy.
To date, more than 500,000 foreign tourists have visited Malaysia since the borders reopened on April 1 and Nancy was confident that the target of 2 million foreign tourists set by the government and RM8.6 billion (US$1.9 billion) in tourism receipts would be achieved by end of this year.

Queen graces event to mark strategic cooperation between Tourism Pahang and Halia UK
LONDON: Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah last night paid tribute to all quarters who had helped make the promotion of the Tenun Pahang DiRaja exhibition, currently being held at the Malaysian High Commission in Belgrave Square, a success.
Tunku Azizah expressed her thanks to Malaysian High Commissioner Zakri Jaafar, who was present with his wife Nor Aini Abdul Rahman at a dinner at the newly-opened Halia UK restaurant in London.
"I would like to thank the Malaysian High Commission as well as the staff for the use the venue and if possible, I would like to return for more exhibitions of the 'tenun' fabrics here," she said in an impromptu speech at the event, which was held to seal a strategic cooperation between Halia UK and Tourism Pahang in promoting the state.
The Royal Pahang Weave exhibition is part of London Craft Week, currently being held at the Malaysian High Commission until this Sunday.
Tunku Azizah was replying to the tribute paid by Pahang Tourism, Culture, Environment, Plantation and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin, who had congratulated her on the successful launch of the exhibition.
The Queen also thanked Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail as well as her team, which comprised staff and former staff of Kraftangan Malaysia and the Pahang Museum.
Tunku Azizah said it was her duty to serve Pahang by bringing the state's name to the world stage.
Sharkar, meanwhile, said it marked the beginning of realising the Queen's hopes of bringing Tenun Pahang DiRaja to the world.
"We are weaving hope in making Tenun Pahang Diraja a global icon," he said.
Halia UK, formerly Selesa Restaurant, located at the Bayswater Grand Plaza Serviced Apartments, was opened on April 1 under the new management of Noor Amy Ismail and Datuk Wahid Lasiman, who were also present.
Halia UK will be promoting Pahang traditional cuisine in London as part of its efforts to promote the east coast state.
Dishes from recipes published in the Raja Permaisuri's cookbooks, one of which is 'Air Tangan Tengku Puan Pahang', will be cooked and served at the restaurant, whose patrons include holiday makers from all over the world staying at the hotel.
Tunku Azizah, donning the green Halia UK apron, also signed her two cookbooks.
She was also presented with a cheese board by the restaurant, as well a framed page of her recipe, penned by London-based Malaysian calligraphy artist Michelle Khaw.
Also on display on the wall of the new restaurant is a framed piece of tenun Pahang DiRaja.

Roadshows In Iran, Oman & Qatar To Kick-Start Tourism Promotion In West Asia
PUTRAJAYA, 13 May 2022 – Tourism Malaysia is ramping up its marketing effort to lure international tourists from West Asia by launching roadshows in Iran, Oman and Qatar from 13 to 21 May 2022, in conjunction with Malaysia's border reopening.
Led by Dato' Zainuddin Abdul Wahab, Director-General of Tourism Malaysia, the roadshows will bring together Malaysia's tourism fraternity which consists of travel agents, hoteliers, product owners, state tourism bodies and medical tourism industry players, to the capital cities of Tehran, Muscat and Doha.
Apart from formal briefings and presentations on Malaysia's tourism industry, travel trade partners from the West Asian market will have opportunities to attend travel mart sessions and networking dinners to develop new partnerships with Malaysian counterparts.
Travellers from the West Asia market dominate the top five international tourist spending in Malaysia in terms of per capita expenditure besides recording longer average lengths of stay compared to tourists from other markets.
Dato' Zainuddin said: "As we welcome more West Asia travellers back to Malaysia, it is a timely occasion to strengthen our partnership with international airlines such as Qatar Airways, Oman Air and Mahan Air, which offer direct flights to Kuala Lumpur.
''With an exciting line-up of new attractions to be explored, including the newly opened Genting Skyworlds Theme Park, the world’s second tallest skyscraper Merdeka 118, and the Sunway Resort in Kuala Lumpur that just reopened after a once-in-a-generation transformation, we are thrilled to welcome international travellers worldwide to experience our country again.''
