LANGKAWI, Nov 20 -- The variety of local food offered by Malaysians will be highlighted to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2020 (VMY2020), says Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Musa Yusof.
He said as a multiracial and multicultural nation, Malaysia had the advantage of offering gastronomic delights to tourists.
"Statistically, between January and June (this year), tourists contributed RM4.5 billion to the country's food and beverage (F&B) sector, an increase of 8.9 per cent over the same period in 2018.
"Looking at the advantage Malaysia has in terms of offering local food products, the selling proposition through gastronomy is one of the things Tourism Malaysia will focus on for the promotion of VMY2020," he told reporters after launching a Malaysian food promotion by 15 hotel and restaurant operators in Langkawi at the Aseania Langkawi Resort, here last night.
Among the 25 types of food promoted by hotel and restaurant operators on the island are 'peknga', 'kuih qasidah', 'kerabu bronok', 'nasi dagang', 'kambing golek' (roasted mutton), 'laksa Mahsuri udang' (shrimp laksa), nasi lemak, fish head curry and chicken rendang.
