Tourism Ministry Plans Tourism In Asean Promotion Next Year

KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 (Bernama) - The Tourism and Culture Ministry plans to promote the "Tourism in Asean" programme next year in line with Malaysia's appointment as the chairman of Asean in 2015.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Nazri Abdul Aziz said one of the initiatives being discussed in the "Tourism in Asean" programme was visa free travel for tourists from Asean countries.

"There are Asean countries that still insist on visas for travel. The executive council of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is finding ways to facilitate tourist travel in Asean," he told reporters after the opening of the Asean Socio-Cultural Community session, here Wednesday.

Mohamad Nazri said the plan to promote "Tourism in Asean" would benefit the tourism sector in all Asean countries without pitting them against each other.

"We in Asean can activate travel within the region. Malaysians can visit Singapore and Indonesia and their people can come here.

"This will increase the tourist arrivals and make Asean countries as major tourist destinations," he added.

The Asean Socio-Cultural Community session held in conjunction with the National Colloquium on Malaysia's Chairmanship of Asean in 2015 was opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday.
