Malindo Air Introduces Four Times Weekly Direct KK-Taipei Flights

http://www.malindoair.com/

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- Taiwanese tourist arrivals into Sabah are expected to increase with the commencement of Malindo Air's four times weekly direct flight from Kota Kinabalu to Taipei effective Jan 25.

The flights from Kota Kinabalu depart on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays; whereas the flights from Taipei are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

In conjunction with the launch, the airline is offering introductory fares from Kota Kinabalu to Taipei from RM299 one way all-inclusive for economy class and RM999 one way all-inclusive for business class.

Malindo Air Chief Executive Officer Chandran Rama Muthy said they are working closely with the Sabah Tourism Board and Taiwan Tourism Bureau in promoting this newly introduced connectivity to travelers in both countries.

"We are expecting at least 25,000 tourists (from Taiwan for this year) to come to Kota Kinabalu on this new flights," he told press conference here today.

Meanwhile, Sabah Culture, Tourism and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun in his speech said there had been double digit growth in Taiwanese visitors to Sabah, by 26 per cent or 45,367 for the first ten month of last year compared to 36,011 for same period in 2015.

Taiwan was currently the top four market source for Sabah for the past six years together with China, South Korea and Brunei, he added.

The text of his speech was read out by Sabah Culture, Tourism and Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Kamarlin Ombi.

Dimension Data On The Hunt For An Unprecedented Hat-trick At LE TOUR DE LANGKAWI

SHAH ALAM : South Africa’s Dimension Data is the first World Tour team to have signed up for the 22nd Le Tour de Langkawi set to take place in Malaysia from February 22nd to March 1st.

They’ll make their way to South East Asia as defending champions after having won the overall classification twice in a row with Youcef Reguigui and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg.

“In our history that goes over three decades, no team has managed to make a hat trick, so here’s a challenge for them”, Le Tour de Langkawi 2017 CEO Emir Abdul Jalal noted. With two consecutive wins, firstly as MTN-Qhubeka, secondly as Dimension Data, the only African World Tour team mimicked Mapei (with Gabriele Missaglia and Paolo Lanfranchi in 1998-99), Barloworld (Ryan Cox and David George in 2005-06), Diquigiovanni (Ruslan Ivanov and José Serpa in 2008-09) and the same Italian squad renamed Androni (Jonathan Monsalve and José Serpa again in 2011-12).

“Everyone talks about Africa in cycling now but this is nothing new to us in Malaysia”, Emir added. “For the very first Le Tour de Langkawi in 1996, the South African national team was invited. Douglas Ryder, the big boss of Dimension Data now, was part of it. He was one of the star riders of the first few years of the race [5th overall in 1996 and the King of the Mountains in 1998]. We’re grateful to him that he doesn’t turn his back to Malaysia even though the new World Tour doesn’t leave much room for events like ours to attract the biggest teams.”

Shall Dimension Data make this highly expected hat trick in its seventh straight participation, it will be with a third different cyclist as Reguigui and Janse van Rensburg have not been entered this time around. But the name of the defending champion remains on the start list with Jacques Janse van Rensburg.

They aren’t related but the latter is actually the most regular African performer at LTdL in recent years. At the age of 21, racing for Trek-Marco Polo, he finished sixth overall. He also came 20th in 2012, 14th in 2013, 6th again in 2014 and 9th in 2015.

“I’ve always loved Le Tour de Langkawi and I keep the dream of winning it alive”, said Jacques Janse van Rensburg who’s chances are increased with Cameron Highlands being the queen stage rather than the grueling climb to Genting Highlands. “The race is now open to more riders to win”, informed Emir.

Dimension Data is likely to amaze with promising neo pros Ryan Gibbons and Ben O’Connor, from South Africa and Australia respectively. Interestingly, last year’s winner was originally on the reserve list, so is Daniel Teklehaimanot this time around. The first Eritrean to have worn a distinctive jersey at the Tour de France with the polka dot in 2015 might be another surprise coming from Africa. The black continent is a serious candidate for a fifth overall victory after Cox, George, Reguigui and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg.

DIMENSION DATA FOR THE 2017 LE TOUR DE LANGKAWI:
Nic Dougall, Ryan Gibbons (Rsa), Adrien Niyonshuti (Rwa), Ben O’Connor (Aus), Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Jaco Venter (Rsa).
Reserve: Daniel Teklehaimanot (Eri).

Majlis Makan Malam 3,000 Pelancong ASEAN Bersama Menteri Besar
di Stadium Tertutup Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu, kelmarin.

KUALA TERENGGANU 3 Jan.

Discounted airfares to dominate airlines sector this year

MAS' Peter Bellew left and Malindo's Chandran Rama Muthy(right inset. (This year, the three carriers – AirAsia group, Malaysia Airlines Bhd and Malindo Air – are expected to add 40 new aircraft to their current fleet, a move that will see an estimated 7,000 new seats to the system that is already facing over-capacity.)

PETALING JAYA: Discounted airfares for travellers are likely to dominate the aviation sector this year as the three large local carriers slug it out for market share.
Last year, airlines saw their profits rise despite the stiff competition that saw a lot of ticket prices slashed.
This year, the three carriers – AirAsia group, Malaysia Airlines Bhd and Malindo Air – are expected to add 40 new aircraft to their current fleet, a move that will see an estimated 7,000 new seats to the system that is already facing over-capacity.
Despite the stiff competition ahead, the local airline chief executives are bullish about their financial prospects, contrary to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecast that global airline profits for 2017 will be US$29.8bil, US$6bil lower than 2016’s US$35bil forecast.
“It is going to be a pretty good year especially with the weak ringgit (though) higher fuel prices,’’ said AirAsia group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
AirAsia has hedged a substantial amount of its fuel requirement for 2017 at lower prices, hence the optimism.
Malaysia Airlines Bhd CEO Peter Bellew in being optimistic about the year said it would focus primarily on the demands of travellers.
“A big focus for 2017 is fly to places where people want to go and where we can make money,’’ he said.
Bellew added that the big focus in 2017 will be China, where they will add 11 new destinations.
“We will also take a hard look at the loss-making routes amid fuel prices rising and the weakening ringgit,’’ he said.
Malindo Air CEO Chandran Rama Muthy said “we may look into international expansion than expanding in the already crowded domestic space and this will be good for tourism and the country’’.
Chandran expected passenger numbers to grow to 10 million in 2017 and the airline strengthening its flight frequencies.
Malindo has a fleet of 42 aircraft and with 10 new aircraft, it will have 1.2 million seats on offer every month.
AirAsia group offers millions of seats in several markets monthly and will add 28 new aircraft this year.
Malaysia Airlines is still looking to add A330 aircraft after phasing out the B777, but will take delivery of the A350, which will be used for its London flight from October onwards.
AirAsia X is expected to fly back to London via Gatwick sometime in July.
With the bitter battle ahead, Fernandes expects “competition to be bleeding”.
Bellew predicted fares will drop to crazy levels in the second half of 2017 and right through to 2018.
“Malaysia Airlines will avoid the worst of the fare cuts and there really can only be one winner in what I think will be the greatest battles in aviation history among low-cost airlines,” he said.
Higher oil cost will affect airlines, and so will the new hike in passenger service charges for travellers.
IATA estimates fuel to account for 18.7% of the global industry’s cost structure in 2017, still lower than the 33.2% in 2012-2013. It expects jet fuel prices rising from US$52.1 a barrel (2016) to US$64.9 a barrel (2017). By March, when the prices will go above US$65 a barrel, it can be a bit painful for the airlines.
Bellew expects oil prices to hit US$70 by year-end.
But travel trade will remain vogue amid all the challenges as Expedia in association with several other parties believes that falling ticket prices and surging capacity suggests that “2017 could be a banner year for travellers taking to the skies, with more options to fly to more destinations for lower prices.
Moody’s Investors Service 2017 says in its global transportation industry review that “growth in passenger demand will remain slow overall, due to lacklustre global economic growth, geopolitical uncertainties and the threat of terrorism, but increasing demand in developing markets, supported by rising disposable incomes and loosening regulations, will act as an offset”.
Amidst the competition, AirAsia shareholders may be rewarded this year with the expected stake sale of its leasing arm and the planned IPOs of its units in the Philippines, Indonesia and group company in Hong Kong.
But a warning note from a local analyst is that the record profit the Malaysian airline industry enjoyed last year was unlikely to be repeated this year.
The industry would be bogged down by the weaker ringgit, higher oil prices, intense competition with the likes of Malaysia Airlines, Malindo, AirAsia and AirAsia X all expanding simultaneously and airport tax hikes.
“Malindo has added a significant number of planes the past six months, and the winner will be the airport operator, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), due to volume gains,” according to the analyst.

Bubu waiting to greet travellers during Visit Sibu Year

Welcoming croc: Bubu (right) dancing with children at an event.

SIBU: Sibu, the land of kampua mee, wants you to come and meet Bubu.
Bubu, the official mascot for Visit Sibu Year, is inspired by the crocodile Bujang Sibu.
The organisers are hoping that backpackers and travellers with a sense of adventure will explore the many longhouses upriver, among others.
With the theme “Sibu – the Heartland of Borneo”, this mainly Foochow town is hoping to captivate more tourists this year.
“This will put Sibu on the tourism map. The economic spin-off of the event will exert a multiplying effect. A number of economic activities will bring benefits to the people, not just to Sibu Municipal Council and businessmen alone,” said Second State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.
“During this economic uncertainty, travellers from countries with stronger currencies will visit places with weaker currencies. So, we have to seize this opportunity,” he added.
Visit Sibu Year 2017 kicked off during the New Year countdown on Saturday.
Some of the activities being planned include the World Da Bo Gong Festival (May 12-14), Sibu Street Art Festival (June 9-17), Borneo Cultural Festival (July 20-29), Borneo International Martial Art Festival (July 21-24), Sibu Marathon (Sept 16), Sibu BASE Jump (Sept 21-24), Sibu Lantern & Food Festivals (Oct 3-26), and a cruise along the mighty Rajang River (Nov 10-11).
While the Rajang River is not known for its man-eating crocodiles, travellers can expect to be greeted by Bubu while in town.
To have a glimpse of what’s in store, the organisers have prepared a promotional video on YouTube/Visit Sibu Year 2017.

Bastions of old KL to be preserved

KUALA LUMPUR: The heritage status of the Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC) and Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman here where the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong was installed and the first Parliament was held, will be preserved.
Clarifying the issue, Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said the ministry was only seeking to revoke the heritage status of parts of MaTiC’s immediate vicinity which included the Lanai field, front yard and adjacent parking space to enable development.
“We only want to change the status of some sections. We will not touch MaTiC and the Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman due to its rich history,’’ Nazri said yesterday.
Conservation groups had expressed surprise and concern over what they understood was a move to revoke the heritage status of both buildings located in Jalan Ampang.
They were responding to a notice published in several newspapers on Dec 28, on both sites being stripped of their heritage status.
The notice, issued by Heritage Commis-sioner Dr Zainah Ibrahim, listed the sites as “Lot 45 Section 58, Lot 139 Section 58, and part of Lot 158 Section 57, The Old Building of Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC).”
Heritage of Malaysia Trust president Elizabeth Cardosa said there was no provision in the National Heritage Act for the revocation of a heritage site gazette.
“Unless the Act is amended to enable this, it is questionable if the commissioner has the power to revoke a heritage site which has already been gazetted and if that is so, this revocation is ultra vires the Act,” she said.
Nazri said the ministry was planning new developments there, including building a hotel.
“It will be a waste if we do not fully utilise the area. We cannot classify the field and the parking area as a heritage site.
“On the proposed hotel, we will set strict guidelines in that the architecture and design must be the same as the surrounding heritage buildings,’’ he added.
The main MaTic building, originally the house of wealthy businessman Eu Tong Seng, became a centre for many social activities in Kuala Lumpur in the pre-World War II days.
During the war, it was used by the British and Japanese armies as a war office.
In 1956, the building was acquired by the government of Malaya. The building sits on a 2.6ha plot which was formerly an orchard.
