-UTUSAN/ASYRAF MUHAMMAD

New site identified for international airport construction in Perak

State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ir Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin the project at Perak Tengah District and Land Office here, today.
- NSTP/MUHAMAD LOKMAN KHAIRI

PARIT: The state government has identified a new site near Felcra Nasaruddin in Bota here for the construction of an international airport in Perak.

State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ir Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the new location was located about 40km from the original proposed site of the airport in Seri Iskandar.

Mohammad Nizar said however, the proposal to build an airport on a 1,618.7ha site required a thorough study before implementation.

"Today, a meeting was held with Colebrand International Limited which is an infrastructure engineering company from the United Kingdom regarding the site for the construction of the new airport.

"The company is then taken to the proposed location where they will carry out a study to see the suitability of the site before submitting the results of the study to the state government," he said.

Mohammad Nizar said this in a press conference after attending a briefing and presentation of the project at Perak Tengah District and Land Office here, today.

Also present were Colebrand International Limited director Jim Scott and its managing director, Dr Farid Idrus.

He added that the proposed construction of the airport had also been approved in principle by the federal government.

"This company has already met with the Prime Minister's Office, the Transport Ministry and the Perak Menteri Besar to give an overview of the construction of the airport.

"It means that there are no issues with the Transport Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office. They have indicated to agree with what we propose," he said.

When asked about the status of the land, Mohammad Nizar said that it was partly owned by Felcra Nasaruddin, the State Secretary Corporation and the state government.

"The previous airport site involved a lot of village-owned sites and cemeteries which became a problem for residents.

Meanwhile, Farid said the study, which is expected to take six months, would look at the suitability of the location as to whether it meets the requirements of an international standard airport.

He said the results of the study for the first phase would be presented to the state government for further action.

"If the state government agrees with the proposal submitted, then the second phase that will be implemented involves the development of the project.

"Based on our expectations and experience, the construction is expected to take some 60 months or five years. God willing, within the next five years, Perak will have a new airport," he said.

It was reported on Mac 29 last year that land that was previously identified as a location to build a new international airport in Seri Iskandar had been sold.

Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming said it was learned that the land was sold by an irresponsible party without state permission.

Talks to build a bigger airport in Perak to boost tourism and other industries have been going on for years.

The current Sultan Azlan Shah Airport (LTSAS) in Ipoh cannot be expanded as land is limited.

MAHB to gain from strong recovery in tourism sector

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is expected to see positive impacts from the improvement in the tourism sector including growth in passenger movements.

According to Kenanga Research, the airport operator is expected to see continued recovery in business and leisure air travel throughout this year.

Citing Tourism Malaysia, it said tourist arrivals are expected to jump 60% to 16 million this year from an estimated 10 million in 2022.

The research house expects tourism activity to return to the levels seen before the Covid-19 pandemic by 2024. Tourist arrivals would likely expand further by 24% to 20 million in 2024 compared with the pre-pandemic level of 26 million annually. “This should underpin growth in MAHB’s passenger throughput demand in 2023. We expect traffic trajectory to grow in subsequent months as airlines continue to reactivate more aircraft to match increasing demand,” it said in a report.

Similarly, RHB Research expects a stronger recovery in the tourism industry in the second half of this year.

“We like MAHB for the salient recovery of international tourism expected in 2H23, driven by a gradual recovery of tourist arrivals from China and resumption of airline capacity,” it said.

The increase in the number of medium and long-haul flights to Perth, Sydney and Auckland, South-East Asia and South Asia destinations would amplify the growth trajectory.

On the flip side, Kenanga Research noted the proposal by the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) to raise airport tariffs based on the consumer price index (CPI) with effect from regulatory period 1 (RP1) covering the 2024 to 2026 period would limit MAHB’s earnings upside for the medium term.

“The recent proposal to peg airport tariffs to the CPI (despite operating cost rising at a much faster pace) could work against MAHB’s ability to generate enough cash flow for capital expenditure purposes, particularly for airport expansion and maintenance,” it explained.

“While Mavcom also proposes a mechanism for MAHB to recoup losses incurred during RP1 in RP2, we are concerned over MAHB’s cash flow over the RP1 duration,” Kenanga Research added.

Mavcom’s third consultation paper and the new operating agreement (OA) is likely to provide better clarity for MAHB in developing airport networks and implementing service improvements moving forward.

Kenanga Research added that MAHB’s 1H23 system-wide passenger throughput came within expectations, recording 56 million passengers movements which made up 46% of its full-year forecast of 122 million against the 84 million in 2022.

It will be located in the mid hills of Genting Highlands, five kilometres below the peak of Genting Highlands and 33km away from Kuala Lumpur.

Leveraging on the already high tourist arrivals at Genting Highlands, King’s Park Genting Highlands is a mega development in partnership with Yuk Tung Group and the Association for the Promotion of Higher Education in Malaysia.

The development will comprise an integrated entertainment hub that includes a unique blend of living spaces, commercial and recreational offerings and span over 61 hectares of freehold land.

At the grand opening of King’s Park Gallery on July 22, its executive vice president, Sean Chen, said that King’s Park development is poised to become Genting Highland’s first CBD and integrated entertainment hub.

This mega project will be segmented into five phases. The first phase is scheduled to be completed in 2026 and will comprise a commercial centre featuring a two kilometre stretch of pedestrian street shops. The 12 blocks planned will house a total of 360 shops with colonial and vintage architecture. Each retail block unit is held under a freehold strata title and has its own identity and facade design.

Later phases will include hotels with service apartments, two international branded theme parks, a halal hub with halal dining and a Syariah compliant hotel as well as housing units. One international hotel brand that has confirmed its presence is Swissôtel, which will make its Malaysian debut at King’s Park, when it opens in late 2028.

The final phase will be the construction of a wellness and medical centre, expected to be completed in the next eight to 10 years.

Chen added: “We extend a warm invitation to global investors to be part of this remarkable venture. As the project progresses, we anticipate a multitude of businesses, residents and tourists to be drawn to this thriving hub, thus cementing its status as a pulsating heart of an active and exciting region.”

How Tourism Malaysia is building back the sector in the post-Covid era

Dr Ammar: 'With careful planning, ongoing efforts, and the gradual reopening of borders, we remain optimistic about the recovery and growth of tourism in Malaysia.'
— MUHAMAD SHAHRIL ROSLI/The Star

FESTIVALS, endurance sports, food trails, hiking and heritage tours.

These are among the products that the government is banking on to bring the buzz back to the Malaysian tourism industry after Covid-19 lockdowns nearly decimated it says newly appointed Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Dr Ammar Abd Ghapar.

“According to the World Tourism Organisation, the global tourism sector is showing signs of recovery in 2023,” Ammar tells The Star in an interview recently.

“In the first quarter of 2023, international arrivals reached 80% of pre-pandemic levels, with an estimated 235 million tourists travelling internationally. This figure more than doubled compared to the same period in 2022, indicating a resilient rebound.

“As for Malaysia, we are forecasting a gradual return to pre-pandemic numbers.”

Ammar estimates that the number of international visitors could return to pre-Covid 19 levels by 2025, when arrivals are projected to reach 23.5 million, while total receipts are expected to hit RM76.8 billion.

In 2019, before Covid-19 shut down all travel, Malaysia received 26.1 million international visitors who brought in RM86.1 billion in revenue, according to Tourism Malaysia statistics.

For this year, after the last of the pandemic era travel restrictions were lifted in China, Malaysia aims to attract 16.1 million international tourists that are expected to bring in RM49.2 billion in receipts.

About 4.5 million international arrivals were logged during the first quarter of this year and if the same number is maintained for each consecutive quarter, Ammar is hopeful of reaching the agency’s target.

“If we are able to maintain the same number, we will get 18 million by the end of the year. And we are not factoring the travel that happens in July and August, which is the summer season for Europeans and the year-end holiday breaks.”

Selling Malaysia’s tourism gems

As a marketing agency, one of the main tools that Tourism Malaysia is using to achieve these goals is overseas promotions where it has planned and participated in more than 100 events.

The agency kicked these off sales missions to Hong Kong and Taiwan in January, followed by Nordic countries including Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Events were also held in the Indian cities of Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

It has also participated in global tourism fairs including FITUR 2023 Spain, ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in Indonesia; the Nguyen Hu Flower Street Festival in Vietnam; 16th Tehran International Tourism Exhibition (TITEX) in Iran and South Asia’s Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) 2023 in India.

The agency also promoted Malaysia at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2023 in Dubai; the Seoul International Travel Fair (SITF) 2023 in Korea.

“We also led sales missions to Bahrain and Kuwait to capitalise on the continuing growth of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries,” Ammar says.

Besides these on-the-ground events, the agency has invested heavily in advertisements and digital content on some of the world’s top television channels.

One example is a collaboration with Discovery Network in producing the You, Me & Malaysia travelogue series that will be broadcasted on TLC & Discovery Channel in India, Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries.

An ad campaign called the “The Soul of Malaysia”, is currently being aired on several British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) networks in the Asia Pacific, Europe, South Asia and Middle East markets.

“With local friendliness, decent cost of living, quality of local medical care, rich cultural heritage and unique natural attractions alongside fascinating local arts, history and cuisine, we believe Malaysia’s tourism industry has strong competitiveness and unique selling points”.

Helping hand up for tourism operators

A critical part of these sales missions is to bring along as many Malaysian tourism operators who can then market their products to the international market, Ammar says.

As it is expensive to attend these overseas sales missions, the government subsidises about half of the cost for local operators through the Galakan Melancong (GAMELAN) Malaysia initiative.

For instance, when Tourism Malaysian mounts a sales mission abroad the number of hoteliers, product owners and tour agencies that are able to come along is small due to the high cost of the trip, says Ammar.

“This subsidy helps more of them to join us and during the sales mission we create business-to-business sessions where the Malaysian company sells their products to firms in the host country”.

“Without the subsidy we will only get about five Malaysian tourism companies to 50 foreign companies which is an imbalance,” he says.

In order to further help local players build back after two years of lockdown, the government is also giving out grants for them to organise events such as concerts, sports competitions and food fairs that encourage travel.

Under the Tourism Sector Support Grant scheme (GSSP), RM500,000 and RM1 million are given out for domestic and international events, respectively.

“When we used to have just Tourism Malaysia or the ministry creating an event, we would have about 20 per year. But now we expect to have more because the private sector is also organising the events aimed at bringing visitors in”.

Ammar expects the grant to double the amount of events this year and proposals have included cultural festivals, concerts, food carnivals, football clinics, yachting and golf tournaments.

“With careful planning, ongoing efforts, and the gradual reopening of borders, we remain optimistic about the recovery and growth of tourism in Malaysia”.

Payang Walk, operasi beca warisan produk pelancangan baharu

Ketua Pengarah Tourism Malaysia, Datuk Dr. Ammar Abd.

Desaru’s Anantara deepens sustainability reach

The resort’s on-site bottling plant helped in removing 154,000 plastic bottles from circulation in 2022

Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas in Malaysia has expanded its CSR programme with new initiatives to protect the land and water ecosystems on Desaru Coast.

The resort rolled out the brand-wide CSR programme Dollar for Deeds in June, which matches guests’ donations ringgit for ringgit, with money raised going to ReWild Desaru, a not-for-profit organisation focused on resident wildlife protection.

This effort joins the resort’s on-site water bottling initiative, achieved through its own bottling plant established in 2022, as well as its food sustainability commitment that sees it sourcing from its own hydroponic farm, run by a local vendor. The resort also partners with Rainforest Alliance, a certified fair-trade supplier, which supplies coffee beans for the restaurants. Coffee pods used in guestroom coffee machines are sent back to the manufacturer to be recycled, while food waste is turned into fertiliser for crops.

Christian Gerart, general manager at Anantara Desaru Coast, said team members were mindful of conservation, and would regularly recycle aluminium cans and paper products as well as switch off the lights when leaving the room.

The resort also promotes a love for nature among guests with activities such as birdwatching and daily nature walks.
