Pulau Sembilan set to reopen
BATU GAJAH: Pulau Sembilan, the island famous for its unusual 'blue tears' of seawater that appear at night due to bioluminescent phytoplankton will soon be re-opened to the public.
State Housing, Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman, Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi said the natural setting and environment of the island have improved tremendously after it was closed in April 2017.
"From the report I got from the State Park (Perak State Parks Corporation), the blue tears have recovered nicely, the white sandy beach also has improved greatly and flora and fauna which have been decelerated by development before have actually rehabilitated.
"At the moment we are still seeking approval for it to be reopened but since we are still undergoing the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), with no interstate travel, we will wait until the borders open.
"We will make further announcements after that," she told reporters after launching the Geopark Community Program at Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No 5 (TT5) here today.
Pulau Sembilan is an archipelago of nine islands which among others has a true treasure nicknamed 'Blue Tears' with water that glistens like stars in the sky. It is a popular spot for snorkelling, fishing, camping and ocean rope swing activities.
The blue tears refer to a rare plankton that emits a blue glow in the dark along the islands' shorelines.
The closure follows violation of the ruling that only 120 visitors were allowed at a time as part of conservation measures as it is a small island with one strip of sand only.
However the authorities found there had been 300 to 400 people daily which eventually damaged the pristine condition of the sand and also caused other damages.

#JOM! GO: Towards more sustainable Club Med vacations
WITH the coming Earth Day this Thursday, Club Med shares a series of its sustainability efforts in its first resort in Asia - Club Med Cherating, and the anticipated Club Med Borneo Kota Kinabalu.
These efforts go in line with the relaunching of its global Thrive Again programme that gives the resort a part to play for a more positive tourism, from all-inclusive to inclusive for all and to continue to show the way towards more sustainable and more desirable vacations.
CLUB MED CHERATING
Eco-friendly activities:
* Turtle conservatory programme - Located near the resort, guests can also learn all about turtles and their life cycle, as well as the history of the sanctuary, what they do, and their achievements in animal conservation efforts.
* Amazing Family initiative - Implementing environmentally focused activities for families through its Time to Care and Time to Quest, which promote education on the nature and wildlife surrounding the resort, while creating bonding holiday moments with loved ones.
* Beach Clean-up at Cherating Beach : "Clean-up the beach" operations are run by the G.Os in seven Club Med resorts, including Club Med Cherating,
Reducing waste:
* Bye Bye Plastic - Launched in 2018, the programme aims to ban single-use plastic products from bars, restaurants and rooms by 2021.
* Food Waste reduction programme – Club Med has managed to limit food waste to 101g per meal and per person thanks to more than 60 years of experience in generous and judicious buffets: a significant performance for one of the least avoidable waste generators.
Wild Months:
Since its launch in 2019, Club Med has increased its efforts to collaborate with like-minded brands to introduce curated nature-centric activities that are educational and respectful to nature. The same year also saw the resort partnered with LUSH to teach guests to craft their own cruelty-free and organic bath bombs while raising awareness on the importance of sustainability and combatting over-packaging of beauty and health products.
This year, Wild Months will collaborate with Zero Waste Malaysia and other eco-friendly brands to curate activities for guests at the resort.
Green Globe certified resort.
Club Med Cherating is the first Club Med resort to be certified globally in 2017, and has their certification renewed until today. In order for Club Med to attain the Green Globe certification for each resort, it first had to implement and manage an action plan for sustainable development.
This included initiatives such as effective management of waste, as well as the saving of energy and protection of biodiversity.
CLUB MED BORNEO KOTA KINABALU
Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Certification
Club Med Borneo Kota Kinabalu will be the Club Med's first large-scale sustainably-built beach resort in Asia Pacific certified by the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). The resort is built on 41 acres of land flanked by tropical rainforests, fronted by kilometres of pristine beach with picture-perfect white sand, and located next to a mangrove reserve.
The focus on eco-sustainability shared by both Club Med and GSBRC looks to ensure that the location's natural beauty is preserved while increasing their positive impact to the community. Currently still in development, the resort is set to open late 2024.

Tourism Malaysia Lancar Laman Tourism Interactive Digital Brochures
photo: Tourism Malaysia/Suhaimi |

Lured by beauty of Malaysia's amazing dive destinations
Eternal summer, azure skies, coral reefs, fabulous beaches, rich culture — a paradise for tourists. And all of these are in Malaysia. And even more.
Don't forget about the colourful underwater world, too! I will never forget my feelings when, for the first time, having passed the diving exams at the insistence of my daughter, Anastasia, an avid diver, I plunged into the sea near Pulau Redang.
The seabed always beckons because it hides incredible secrets and unexpected surprises. The sight of corals and colourful fish takes your breath away. There are no words to describe their unearthly beauty.
They are worthy of universal admiration and adoration. And the beauty of Malaysia is known not only in the country itself, but also abroad, including in Russia.
That is why it was so crowded near the Malaysian booth organised by Diveheart, a non-profit organisation for the disabled community, in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia at the Moscow Dive Show (MDS) 2021 from April 8 to 11.
Held at the Gostiny Dvor Exhibition Centre, MDS 2021 was the largest exhibition of equipment, tourism and training for people interested in scuba diving and other water-based sports in Russia and Eastern Europe.
Diveheart was represented at the exhibition by Syed Abdul Rahman Syed Hassan, who is based in Kuala Lumpur. As founder and director of Kids Scuba Malaysia, Syed has been conducting Diveheart and adaptive diving programmes in Malaysia for almost 10 years and has trained more than 100 local adaptive divers and volunteers.
"Malaysia is truly blessed with so many beautiful dive destinations, including Pulau Tioman, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Tenggol and, of course, Pulau Sipadan," said Syed, adding that Malaysian waters were known for its rich underwater biodiversity, beautiful coral reefs and suitable for divers of all levels.
And this is, of course, true. No wonder that the famous oceanologist, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who visited Pulau Sipadan in the 1970s, admired diving in Malaysia. He also made the film The Ghost of the Sea Turtle, in which he called Pulau Sipadan one of the last pearls of our planet. My daughter was lucky to visit this place and could confirm Cousteau's words.
"The natural world in Malaysia is so amazing that sometimes you can be speechless, and the mind simply refuses to admit that such beauty really exists," she said.
The Moscow office of Tourism Malaysia described Malaysia's participation in the exhibition as a success. Jeffrey Munir, the head of the office, said: "We can only hope that the pandemic will subside and the situation in Malaysia will allow the government to ease quarantine measures."
I myself could add that diving in Malaysia is suitable for divers of all levels as waters are generally calm and reefs are protected and most dive sites can be accessed by speed boats without any need for a big vessel.
And, of course, I am sure that the famous Malaysian hospitality, which I had experienced while working at Universiti Malaya for 15 years, will play an important role in attracting divers to this country.

Establish internationally recognised vaccine passport to boost medical tourism, said APHM
image: APHM |
KUALA LUMPUR: An internationally recognised vaccine passport linking vaccination certificates would allow Malaysia to boost its medical tourism and attract foreign tourists into the country, thus expediting the economic recovery.
The Association of Private Hospital of Malaysia (APHM) is urging the government to establish an internationally recognised vaccine passport with Covid-19 test results to be linked in MySejahtera app.
APHM president Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh said the vaccine passport is an important digital platform that uses robust blockchain technology in identifying travellers' information on vaccination certificates, testing results and quarantine periods observed.
Dr Kuljit said the vaccine passport must be recognised globally, connecting travellers to different platforms to ease travelling journey.
"We are concerned about our safety and the arrival of medical tourists from other countries, especially the recognition of their vaccination and testing status.
"We urge the government to allow us to participate in these negotiations to include us as we also need to give our input.
"We are an interested and concerned party (private hospitals). We should have a seamless method of uploading the required information through the digital application," he told the New Straits Times when contacted today.
Dr Kuljit said this certification has to be 'reciprocal' in ensuring the information's authenticity for the vaccinations and testing.
There had been discussions with China and Singapore for the recognition of Malaysia's digital vaccination certification on a global platform.
Moving on, Dr Kuljit said APHM is positive that the government has vaccinated most of the healthcare frontliners.
By end of this month, he said the initiative will cover almost 80 per cent to 90 per cent of the private healthcare frontliners.
"Malaysia vaccination programme should be enhanced. About 60 registered private hospitals will assist the government's vaccination programme beginning next week.
"With this public vaccination, we hope private hospitals can procure their own vaccines to further vaccinate more people especial, the economic frontliners to achieve herd immunity at a faster rate, thus facilitating in business reopening and tourisms," he said.
Dr Kuljit said APHM is in talks with the government to allow the private hospitals to procure different vaccines by offering the option to the public.
"It will be paid by the patients, an alternative choice provided for the patient for those who want to get the vaccine for specific reasons, for example, students and business fraternity," he said.
Private hospitals are likely to procure the vaccine beginning in October at earliest due to the limited supply of vaccine worldwide.
"However, we feel that it will be too late for economic frontlines to restart their businesses as they run a risk of infection, while their production and business work will get hampered, denting the economy.
"We have proposed to have the private vaccine programme earlier than October this year," he said.
Dr Kuljit said the government had progressively done a good job to inoculate most of the medical frontliners.
However, the second and third phases of the vaccination programmes should be well-promoted as the public's response for registration was slow.
According to Health Ministry's latest report, so far 434,301 people have been fully vaccinated and 671,589 people have received their first dose and are currently waiting for their subsequent doses.
Currently, about 8.83 million people have registered for the vaccination programme under MySejahtera.
Dr Kuljit said private hospitals had initiated their assistance to help the government in promoting more public for vaccine registration.
Among others initiatives such as creating health test, kiosk and information booth within the hospitals building to enhance vaccine registration.

DMU trains to boost East Coast economic, tourism sectors
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong also hoped that the DMUs which are worth RM380 million would benefit the people, especially in Kelantan and Pahang. -NSTP/NIK ABDULLAH NIK OMAR
PASIR MAS: The Government hopes that the introduction of the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains which were launched today will boost the economic, social, and tourism sector in the East Coast states.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong also hoped that the DMUs which are worth RM380 million would benefit the people, especially in Kelantan and Pahang.
For a start, he said five of the 13 DMU trains would start operations in the East Coast alignment involving Tumpat-Gua Musang and Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis.
"These DMU trains are much better than conventional trains in terms of comfort for passengers.
"The train's service is equivalent with developed countries and this is proof that the government is not only focusing on the Klang Valley but also the East Coast states," he said in a press conference after launching the DMU trains at the Pasir Mas Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) station here today.
Also present at the launching were deputy transport minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah and State Works, Infrastructure, Transport and Utilities Committee chairman Datuk Azami Mohd Nor.
Wee said the project was part of the Government's transformation efforts to help the public particularly those who have been using the train as their daily mode of transportation.
"Trains are used by students in remote areas such as Dabong and Kuala Geris and with this new train, they will be more comfortable when going to school," he added.
Earlier, Wee and other delegates boarded the train at the Tumpat station before ending their journey at the station here.
The DMU trains were procured to replace the KTM Intercity conventional diesel train service.
Each coach has 204 seats and equipped with modern facilities, such as LED screens, power sockets, prayer room, toilet, bistro, and parcel storage space.
The train also has four seats and toilets for persons with disabilities.

Proposed Unesco Kinabalu Geopark expected to benefit socioeconomy
Sabah
Parks’ efforts to get recognition for the Kinabalu Park as a Unesco geopark
would help it achieve sustainable development. - Photo courtesy of FelixTongkul.
KOTA BELUD: Sabah Parks' efforts to get recognition for the Kinabalu
Park as a Unesco geopark would help it achieve sustainable development.
Its director Dr Maklarin Lakim said the target was part of the state government's aim to improve the socioeconomy of stakeholders including the locals.
He added should they acquire the status, the Kinabalu Geopark would create geotourism products to add on value and complement the existing tourism products.
Sabah Parks with the Department of Minerals and Geosciences are currently in the process of obtaining recognition of the Kinabalu Geopark site to be designated and declared as a Unesco Global Geopark Kinabalu Site.
The proposed geopark has an area of 4,750 square kilometres, involving the Kinabalu Park, and areas in Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Ranau.
"The concept of the geopark development is divided into three which are the rehabilitation of geology sources, tourism infrastructure development and socioeconomic activities that are based on geology or local community.
"There are 46 potential areas to be turned into geotourism sites," he said after the Kota Belud District Land Community Empowerment Programme at the Botung Sports Complex Hall here today.
He added that the Kinabalu Park, which is one of the sites within the proposed geopark, was recognised by Unesco as the first heritage site in the country in 2000.
Maklarin said such a recognition for the Kinabalu Park has lifted the site as a world-class destination that contributes to the income of the locals.
