World Tourism Conference 2022: Tourism Futures Reimagined @ Sabah, Malaysia ( 28 ~ 30 November 2022 )

28 November 2022 – The World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2022 jointly organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia in partnership with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Sabah State Government runs from 28-30 November 2022 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Now in its 6th edition, this year’s conference brings together 1,000 delegates from more than 60 countries to reconnect and reassess tourism’s recovery in the aftermath of the worldwide pandemic.

Alongside UNWTO officials, the conference features some 30 expert speakers comprising government policy makers, industry leaders and leading academicians in championing thought leadership on tourism futures and strategies driving tourism’s recovery and resilience in a post-pandemic world.

They include the State Minister, Ministry of Tourism Maldives, Dr. Ahmed Salih; Regional General Manager, Tourism Australia, Mr. Brent Anderson; Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Stout, USA, Prof. Jafar Jafari; Co-founder of Traveloka, Indonesia, Mr. Albert; and representatives from some of the world’s most innovative tourism-related companies such as Skift, Tripadvisor, TUI Group and Intrepid Travel.

Local Malaysian experts making an appearance on the exclusive WTC 2022 stage include Prof. Dr. Amran Hamzah of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia; Mr. HC Chan, CEO of Sunway Malls & Theme Parks; Ms. Lau Yin May, Group Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, Malaysia Airlines; Mr. Yusno Yunos, CEO of Evenesis and two local Sabahans from Kota Kinabalu – Dr. Maklarin Lakim, Director of Sabah Parks; and Ms. Jessica Yew, Founder and Director of Sticky Rice Travel.

One of the major highlights of the conference is the keynote presentation by distinguished speaker, Prof. Dato’ ChM. Dr. Mazlin Mokhtar of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network-Asia and Academy of Sciences Malaysia, who will for the first time bring a scientist’s perspective to the WTC, particularly in advancing a more sustainable tourism recovery which embraces energy transition and carbon neutrality.

In her welcoming address, Datuk Hajah Saraya Arbi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia acknowledged the tremendous impact of the worldwide pandemic and multiple crises which continue to disrupt the tourism sector’s growth trajectory.

“However, there is also a great window of opportunity for us to rethink and reimagine tourism for the future which is more sustainable, inclusive and less susceptible to shocks,” she said.

Despite challenging headwinds to the global economy in 2023 and beyond, experts have great expectations for the tourism sector, predicting continued pent-up demand alongside new growth opportunities and emerging niche markets arising from the pandemic. For instance, as tourism recovery gets underway, the boundaries between work, home, leisure and travel become increasingly blurred, requiring greater cross-collaboration between tourism and transport, health, security, cities and urban systems towards greater liveability and quality of life for both visitors and residents alike.

“These are just some of the exciting new prospects that will be explored during the 2-day conference. Therefore, I hope the chosen theme of “Tourism Futures Reimagined” will inspire deep insights on the challenges, opportunities, trends and forecasts shaping the future of the industry,” Saraya concluded.

Tourism Malaysia's Fam Trip From The Netherlands Is Back To Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, 21 November 2022 – Tourism Malaysia is taking media from the Dutch market on its familiarisation (FAM) trip to promote Malaysia as a safe holiday destination and welcome more international travellers.

A total of six media aboard Turkish Airlines from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur for an eight-day seven-night (8D7N) trip in collaboration with Turkish Airlines and Sabah Tourism Board from 14th November to 21st November 2022. Turkish Airlines serves daily five direct flights from Amsterdam to Istanbul and ten flights per week between Istanbul and Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia is a multicultural country with a tropical climate that offers everything from a pulsating metropolis to fantastic nature and wonderful beaches. It is therefore an ideal travel destination for tourists from Europe, including the Netherlands.

The press trip started off with a Full Day Guided Experience Kuala Lumpur Tour, whereby several attractions were highlighted including the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, Merdeka Square, Masjid Negara, Thean Hou Temple, Batu Caves, Central Market Kuala Lumpur & Perdana Botanical Garden. In the evening the participants had the opportunity to experience the food market at Jalan Alor.

The next day, the group boarded an early flight to Kota Kinabalu where Sabah Tourism Board hosted the group. The program in Sabah included a river cruise at KLIAS, a Mangrove Forest Reserve. With the bizarre-looking proboscis monkey gaining as much popularity as the orangutan, the Klias Wetland with its large population of this wildlife is fast becoming the latest ecotourism destination in Sabah.

The media also followed a traditional cooking class at Kiulu Farmstay, where they could experience Borneo's Rustic Countryside, a unique and completely off-the-tourist radar experience. This beautiful farmstay is a community-based ecotourism project that acts as a catalyst for community development and capacity building. Tucked away in a beautiful valley with a selection of activities offered. Other activities included in the itinerary were leisure & fun cycling through Linangkit Cultural Village and recreational activities at Bunga Raya Island Resort.

Tourism Malaysia’s fam trips are tailored to offer international media valuable opportunities to gain first-hand experience of travelling to Malaysia in the post-pandemic. This programme will support Malaysia’s target of achieving 9.2 million tourist arrivals and RM 26.8 billion in tourist spending.

Malaysia only recorded 466 Dutch tourists in 2021, compared to the same period in 2019, with a total of 82,110 Dutch visiting Malaysia. We hope that this programme will motivate our industry friends to come back stronger in reviving the tourism industry said Dato’ Haji Zainuddin.

Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Hospitality rises in Langkawi

From left: Tourism Productivity Nexus’ Rohizam Md Yusoff, United Nations Development Programme’s Niloy Banerjee, Anthony Wong, Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners’ Shaharuddin M Saaid, and Langkawi Development Authority’s Azmil Munif Mohd Bukhari

A green-certified resort on Langkawi Island, Cottage By The Sea by Frangipani Langkawi, has recently established itself as the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Hospitality, with support from Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Owner and operator, Anthony Wong, has developed an efficient system to clean polluted water, including raw sewage and waste cooking oil into potable water in four days, as well as desalination using a special bio-engineered constructed wetland – all without using any energy.

This system has been recognised by the government of Malaysia and is included in the 12th Malaysia Plan.

Wong is also a consultant for an ongoing water treatment project in the tourist hubs of Pantai Tengah and part of Pantai Chenang. Funded by the state government to treat wastewater, the hubs are deploying the same system Wong has developed.

Wong shared: “Access to clean water is a perennial issue with islands all over the world. We are ready and willing to share our know-how on creating clean potable water with governments in South-east Asia and elsewhere, as well as with the private sector and non-governmental organisations.”

Wong has also developed a train-the-trainers programme, and intends to reach out to ASEAN Tourism Association to send interested members for training.

The Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Hospitality was recently launched at the Sustainable Hotels in the Tropics: The How of achieving the UN 17 SDG & Climate Change, Circular Economy, Sustainability, Water & Food Security conference.

At the conference, Wong also launched his publication documenting over 200 green practices that have been implemented at the resort. Sustainability measures have been deployed throughout the resort, from the rooms, restaurants, landscape and facilities that include a fully-operational organic farm.

According to Wong, Cottage By The Sea by Frangipani Langkawi saves over 30 per cent of operational costs through these sustainable practices.

Conference attendees, including UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network vice-president for Asia, Woo Wing Thye, representatives from LADA, academia, hoteliers and non-governmental organisations were also taken on a guided tour to see for themselves the green practices implemented at the resort.

AirAsia X first to reconnect direct flights to Busan next year

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia X (AAX) is set to be the first airline from Malaysia to reconnect direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Busan, South Korea, in early 2023.

The airline said the thrice-weekly flights would be the second AAX route to South Korea after launching flights to Seoul in April this year.

In addition to relaunching the route, AAX signed a memorandum of understanding with the Busan Tourism Organisation (BTO) to develop joint sales and marketing campaigns, leverage travel agents' support, strengthen flight connectivity, and foster both countries' economies through tourism.

AirAsia X chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail said South Korea is a crucial market, and the airline has seen tremendous growth from its existing route to Seoul with an 80 per cent average load factor.

"Starting with three weekly services and based on strong forecast demand, we expect the flight frequency to Busan to return to daily services by year-end.

"We believe the relaunch of the Busan route will provide a significant boost to strengthening business and tourism ties between Malaysia and South Korea, and we wish to thank the governments and relevant authorities for their tremendous support," he said.

He said the airline flew about 200,000 guests to and from Busan in 2019.

"As we look to increase the connectivity to South Korea further, we trust that our direct flights to Busan will provide a welcome boost for tourism and the economy in both countries.

"The new route also reflects our commitment to continue offering our guests great value mid-range air travel, and we look forward to seeing a surge in tourist arrivals into/from Busan in the near future," said Benyamin.

BTO president Jung-Sil Lee said the relaunch of AAX direct flights to Busan would mark a major milestone in resuming services to the city.

"We believe travellers will appreciate the direct and affordable connection, making Busan a top holiday destination once again," he said.

Tourism Malaysia Joins WORLD TRAVEL MARKET 2022

LONDON, 7 NOVEMBER 2022 – Malaysia returns to participate in the World Travel Market (WTM) 2022 which is held at ExCeL London, with a strong message to promote Malaysia as a top-of-mind holiday destination after travel restrictions were withdrawn in most countries around the world. This year is the 41st participation by Tourism Malaysia since it was introduced in 1981.

Starting from 7 to 9 November, WTM 2022 will welcome its attendees physically in ExCeL London. Tourism Malaysia is joined on the stand by 49 tourism-related organisations taking part in the event, comprising (18) tour operators, (15) hotels and resorts, eight (8) state tourism agencies, three (3) tourism associations, one (1) airline and four (4) tourism-related services, including Malaysia Health Tourism Council (MHTC), inviting healthcare travellers to Malaysia for an exclusive wellness travel experience, combining world-class leisure getaways and offering preventive care services.

WTM has long served as an important platform to introduce Malaysian tourism attractions that meet the interests of the UK and European markets, and continues to be the suitable platform for industry players to meet and plan their business strategies for the coming years.

Commenting on the participation, His Excellency, High Commissioner of Malaysia to the United Kingdom & Northern Ireland, Ambassador Dato´ Zakri Jaafar said, “WTM is the best platform to promote Malaysia’s tourism industry to the global market in particular the UK and Europe. With the participation of experienced industry players who are able to provide good services to tourists, we are confident that the arrival of tourists from the UK and Europe as a whole will increase. We also hope the participants will take advantage of the B2B session to create wider business opportunities”.

Dato’ Zainuddin Abdul Wahab, the Director-General of Tourism Malaysia is also optimistic about this year’s participation, “Participation in WTM this time is very meaningful for us after going through a difficult period for two years. We will use this opportunity as much as possible to reassess and restructure our strategy in an effort to attract more tourists to Malaysia. Continuous efforts, especially participating in exhibitions like this, are very important to ensure that the national tourism industry returns to its original path.”

In conjunction with their participation in this year's WTM, Tourism Malaysia will launch a generic TV commercial (TVC) for a global promotional campaign. The TVC which lasts 5 minutes, 3 minutes and 30 seconds will highlight the variety of products Malaysia has to offer in line with the Malaysia Truly Asia slogan. Similarly, Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) will also be launching their latest TVC.

Tourism Malaysia will sign a Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) with Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) and Turkish Airlines at the Tourism Malaysia Pavillion, supporting the country’s national carrier in its Bonus Side Trip campaign which allows travellers to add an extra leg to their journey from selected international destinations to enjoy Malaysia's cultural gems at a minimal cost. This follows its recent collaboration with Emirates and Qatar Airways, which is aimed at increasing connectivity so that Malaysia can be visited by tourists from all corners of the world. Currently, Malaysia Airlines is operating twice daily non-stop from London to Kuala Lumpur.

Tourism Malaysia will be at stand AS700.

Sim Leisure Group plans to develop further ESCAPE theme parks

Sim Leisure Group founder and executive chairman Datuk Sim Choo Kheng said it has been a long journey for the group. Courtesy image

Sim Leisure Group, known for conceptualising and creating the ESCAPE brand of parks in Malaysia, has set out to establish itself both domestically and abroad.

The group is currently working on projects in Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and China, and it is also said to have signed a deal to grow the ESCAPE brand in Sri Lanka.

The ESCAPE theme park brand is represented in Malaysia via ESCAPE Penang and the group's exclusive mall attraction, the indoor ESCAPE Challenge park in Petaling Jaya.

Additionally, new parks in Ipoh and Cameron Highlands will soon be coming under the name.

The group's founder and executive chairman Datuk Sim Choo Kheng said it has been a long journey for the group.

"Here we are, 10 years later after the ESCAPE brand was conceptualised in ESCAPE Penang. But as you can see, we are not like other so-called theme parks. We dared to be different, answering the call for reimagined play experiences. Today, we still stick to the tried and tested concept of the rediscovery of childhood, while promoting connection with nature," he said.

Sim claimed that the team's current success is a result of their ingenuity and dedication, which have transformed traditional theme parks and helped to advance travel to Penang and Malaysia.

"While not resting on our laurels, we continue to evolve with the times, creating new experiences for our visitors. So, even as we celebrate 10 years of ESCAPE Penang with new attractions, we continue to look to the future," he added.

ESCAPE Penang recently marked two more game-changing attractions with the launch of Malaysia's first-ever Ski Slope, the first-of-its-kind in Penang's tropical setting; and the Dead Sea Pool, where tourists can naturally float like in Jordan's Dead Sea.

Sim Leisure Group, via the creation and growth of ESCAPE Penang over the last 10 years, has answered the call to put Penang on the map of the world with such a world-class destination, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated at the launch.

Chow said the fact that ESCAPE Penang has drawn millions of people shows that it will continue to be a popular tourism destination for years to come.

According to him, ESCAPE Penang has once again upped the bar for the growth of tourism in Penang with the addition of these two additional attractions.

St. Giles in Johor Baru expected to boost tourism

The hospitality industry has been boosted following the opening of the luxurious St. Giles Southkey. Pix courtesy of St. Giles Southkey.

JOHOR BARU: With the influx of tourists from Singapore and around the world into Johor, the opening of St. Giles Southkey comes at a good time.

With 575 modern and spacious guest rooms, the hotel is under the U.K. based St. Giles brand and is managed locally by Cititel Hotel Management (CHM) Sdn Bhd.

According to hotel general manager Teekay Goh, the hotel is conveniently located within Mid Valley Southkey, which includes a retail mall, exhibition centre and commercial towers.

The hotel is located about 7km from the Singapore-Johor causeway and 26km from the Senai International Airport.

Goh said the hotel is perfectly positioned to meet the growing travel, business, leisure and lifestyle needs in Johor Baru.

"The hospitality industry has gone through tough times during the Covid-19 pandemic but now we have recovered and are primed for a massive wave of travellers to return."

The hotel features a restaurant, business lounge, rooftop bar and lounge, gym facility and a swimming pool overlooking the skyline of Johor Baru's city centre.

"We are delighted to bring St. Giles to Johor. We are known for pushing boundaries and challenging norms which reflect our values," he said.

In his opening address, CHM chief executive officer James Loo said they were delighted to bring the St. Giles Hotel's experience and hospitality to Johor Baru.

Loo said the timing was right especially when the region was expanding its tourism development and increasingly welcoming travellers from Singapore, within Malaysia and other parts of the world.

"The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry has reported that since the reopening of our borders, Johor Baru has welcomed approximately 600,000 travellers from Singapore in just two months," he said, adding that this number was expected to increase further.

According to Loo, the hotel has introduced an eco-friendly approach to its design and facilities to encourage sustainability.

"The hotel has incorporated water dispensers on all guest room floors to minimize the use of single-use plastic bottles that are typically placed in hotel rooms," he said.

He stressed that the water installation is certified safe for drinking with filtration up to 0.5 microns and compliant with NSF/ANSI 53 standards.

"The installation of water dispensers not only contributes to reducing the hotels's negative impact on the environment, but will also result in cost savings," he added.

Present at the opening ceremony were IGB chief financial officer Chai Lai Sim, IGB group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Robert Tan and IGb-Real Estate Investment Trust chief executive officer Antony Patrick Barragry.
