Tourism Malaysia’s Roadshow To Boost International Arrivals From Down Under

PERTH, 22 August 2022 – Tourism Malaysia embarks on a roadshow to Australia from 21 to 27 August 2022 to reconnect and create new partnerships with travel trade partners in enhancing opportunities to boost tourist arrivals to Malaysia.

Headed by Mr Noor Azlan Abu Bakar, Senior Deputy Director, International Promotion Division (Americas, Europe, & Oceania) Tourism Malaysia, the delegation consists of Pahang and Sabah state tourism boards, five travel operators, hoteliers and two medical tourism industry players.

The Malaysian sellers and Australian buyers will participate in the travel mart session, destination presentation, and networking dinner in the cities of Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. The roadshow is organised by Tourism Malaysia and supported by Malaysia Airlines.

Mr Noor Azlan said: “We are excited to re-establish networking after a two-year hiatus to drive travel interest to Malaysia. This roadshow presents a platform for Malaysian partners to share their latest offerings, and we look forward to strengthening business relationships with our Australian counterparts.

“Australia remains a key market for Malaysia. In 2019, we welcomed 368,281 arrivals from Australia, and more than 80 per cent of Australian tourists came to Malaysia for holidays.”

Malaysia has relaxed the entry procedures for fully-vaccinated travellers without requirements to undergo quarantine or pre-departure and on-arrival COVID-19 tests, including children aged 17 and below.

Travel insurance is also not a prerequisite for foreigners entering Malaysia, and inbound travellers no longer need to fill in the Traveller’s Card on the country’s contact tracing app, MySejahtera.

Malaysia’s latest attractions include the newly opened outdoor theme park in the highlands - Genting SkyWorld, and the magnificent Merdeka 118 Tower in Kuala Lumpur, currently standing as the world’s second-tallest building.

There are currently 121 weekly direct flights from Australia to Malaysia via Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia and Batik Air, with a seating capacity of 31,600.

Tourism Ministry aims to have more women join handicraft-making industry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) and its agencies are gearing up to have more women join the handicraft industry.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said this was one of MOTAC's action plans under six transformation strategies in their National Tourism Policy 2020-2030.

"Women must be taught how to generate higher income and raise living standards by monetising their skills and talents by reinforcing the role of tourism as a rural development catalyst.

"As one of MOTAC's initiatives to increase the number of women as industry players, Kraftangan Malaysia's Reskilling and Upskilling programmes have been successfully completed by a total of 1,340 women crafts entrepreneurs.

"In addition, platforms such the E-Kraf Bazar and MyCraftShoppe, as well as mobile apps like CraftOnTheGo, have been utilised by 1,873 women crafts entrepreneurs to promote and market their products and improve service delivery," she said.

Nancy said the ministry also strives to help crafts entrepreneurs in rural areas such as Lusong Laku in Belaga, Sarawak as it was hard for them to market their products online due to no Internet coverage.

"Our Kraftangan staff are doing everything in their power, including purchasing the crafts products created by the crafters in those rural areas.

"It takes around eight hours by car from Bintulu to Lusong Laku so RM19,000 per officer is needed to go to the areas due to the long journey and other expenses," she said.

Nancy said there has been an increase in the number of women crafts entrepreneurs, especially in Sarawak, as the women mostly stay at home while men would go out to work.

She said MOTAC, as such, was seizing the opportunity to train the women in handicraft-making.

The minister was speaking at the launch of the book, Steel Gardenias - Women Leadership: A Malaysian and Global Perspective at The Women's Institute of Management (WIM) building in Taman Tun Dr Ismail today.

WIM chairman Datuk Nellie S. L. Tan Wong, who is the book's author, said the 432-page book features not only positive stories of leaders from around the world but also highlights the dark side of some leaders at the global level.

"In addition to western leaders, this book also features stories about Malaysian women leaders such as (former deputy prime minister) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and (former Chief Judge) Tan Sri Normah Yaakob.

"Quite often in the West, strong women are called 'Steel Magnolias'. Since Malaysia does not have magnolias, I decided to give the name Steel Gardenias, a beautiful white flower with a sweet scent which can be easily found in Malaysia," she said.

KOTA KINABALU: A partnership has been signed between the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) and Firefly to promote travel between Sabah and Penang.

The collaboration was signed between Sabah Matta chapter chairman Lawrence Chin; Penang Matta chapter chairman Vergis Mathews; and FireFly chief executive officer Philip See.

Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin; and Matta president Datuk Tan Kok Liang were also present to witness the signing at the Setia Spice Convention Centre in Penang following the launch of the Penang Matta Fair today.

Part of the collaboration was to jointly market tour packages from both Penang and Sabah, as well as the Penang-Kota Kinabalu direct flight sector offered by Firefly.

Joniston, who is chairman of the Sabah Tourism Board, praised the initiative, saying such a collaboration would bring people closer and deepen ties between Sabah and Penang.

"We need to collaborate on whatever is good for Penang, Sabah, and the Malaysian economy.

"This effort can serve as a good example of how both states can cooperate despite political differences to boost their respective economy via tourism."

He also urged for industry players to look into the possibility of having direct flights between Penang and Sandakan, which is a gateway to nature and wildlife tourism, as well as Tawau, a hub for scuba diving.

Joniston said Sabah and Penang have airports with a high volume of air passenger traffic and both states stood to gain from attracting visitors from each other.

Meanwhile, Yeoh said: "Both Penang and Sabah have their own unique offerings and we have to complement each other.

"We are well aware of Sabah's popularity as an ecotourism destination. We hope to get tourists in Sabah to come to Penang for a different tourism experience. We should not be competing but rather helping one another."

Tan said Matta is committed to facilitating and promoting travel trade, and it hopes to generate RM20 million in sales during the two-day Penang Matta Fair which began today.

The Penang Matta Fair features 158 booths, with 40 per cent of participants promoting domestic tourism.

Tourism Malaysia Organises First Sales Mission In Thailand After Border Reopens

BANGKOK, 18 August 2022 – Malaysia has finally lifted sanctions on its border on 1st April 2022, marking the end of travelling restrictions into the country. Leveraging this new development, Tourism Malaysia has decided to embark on its first sales mission to two (2) major cities in Thailand, namely Songkhla and Bangkok, from 15 until 19 August 2022, after more than two years of hiatus.

The trip kicks off in the city of Songkhla, followed by Bangkok, and is led by the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture, Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri together with Malaysia’s tourism fraternity which consists of Malaysia-based airlines, travel agents, hoteliers, and product owners.

Thailand has been and remains as one of Malaysia’s essential short-haul markets. In 2019, Malaysia welcomed 1,884,306 arrivals from Thailand, and almost 70 per cent of Thais tourists were repeat travellers. Apart from its objective to instil confidence among Thais to feel safe to visit Malaysia once again, the sales mission aims to provide a platform for the industry community to bounce back and return even stronger.

Dato’ Sri Nancy said, “The past two years have been tremendously challenging for us, but ever since the reopening of our international border last April, I am glad to let you know that we have surpassed our initial target of 2 million international tourist arrivals with RM8.6 billion in tourism receipts. Hence, we have revised our target of welcoming 4.5 million international tourist arrivals with RM11.1 billion in tourism receipts this year as we are optimistic about achieving higher numbers.”

“We are delighted to have Thai travellers experience our newly developed and latest attractions, including our outdoor theme park in the highlands – the newly-opened Genting SkyWorld, and the magnificent Merdeka 118 Tower in Kuala Lumpur, currently standing as the world’s second-tallest building,” she added.

Since the reopening of its borders, Thailand is on the top four arrivals to Malaysia. Malaysia opened its shores for quarantine-free travel on 1st April 2022 to welcome fully- vaccinated international travellers. From 1st August 2022, the Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia has announced the relaxation of requirements for travellers to enter Malaysia.

Travellers are no longer required to fill in the Traveller’s Card, or undergo a Pre- Departure Test (PDT) and On Arrival Test (OAT) for their visit to Malaysia. Travel insurance is also no longer a prerequisite for foreigners entering the country.

Duta negara ASEAN anggap produk pelancongan Pahang unik

Ahli Dewan Negara, Mohd.

“Pindaan Rang Undang-undang (RUU) Cukai Pelancongan 2017 memudahkan kementerian melaksanakan perubahan mengikut kehendak semasa demi memastikan industri pelancongan terus mantap.

Kraftangan Malaysia giat promosi kempen ‘Ini Batik Malaysia’

KOLEKSI Batik Malaysia diperagakan sempena kempen ‘Ini Batik Malaysia’ pada Pameran Pertanian Hortikultur dan Agropelancongan Malaysia (MAHA) 2022 di Taman Ekspo Pertanian Malaysia (MAEPS) di sini, kelmarin. – UTUSAN/FARIZ RUSADIO

First international business hotel in Glenmarie opens its doors, managed by Accor

KUALA LUMPUR: The new-built 229 keys midscale Mercure Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie managed by Accor has officially opened in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Located within the new integrated development of Utropolis Glenmarie, it is the first international business hotel in the Glenmarie area and provides both business and leisure travellers with locally inspired experiences.

Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the Selangor Menteri Besar, gave the hotel its formal opening.

Greeting the newest member of the Mercure family in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Amirudin said by 2018/2019, Selangor was the third-largest contributor to the nation's tourism industry.

He said Selangor's natural charms and the expanding MICE industry made it a popular vacation destination.

"The airports (KLIA, klia2, and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport) are located in Selangor. The Mercure Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie's opening in Shah Alam increases the attraction," he said.

Ramesh Singh Sappel, general manager of Mercure Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie, is optimistic about the hotel's performance considering its advantageous location and wide range of services.

He said there were numerous components created to accommodate the various limitations brought on by Malaysia's numerous Movement Control Orders.

Ramesh said the hotel's amenities and services were further enhanced by using the experience to grow from teething problems.

"I am very proud to say that we are now a fully functioning four-star hotel with 229 stylish designed rooms, an urban pool lounge with a stunning view, and facilities to host any professional and personal events.

"None of this would have been possible without the continuous support provided by the Accor team, and the amazing team that we have here. We are not out of the woods yet, but I am sure we can get there," he added.

The 8.78-hectare Utropolis Glenmarie, which has the Utropolis Marketplace mall, 1,500 serviced apartments, and the UOW Malaysia KDU University College campus, is a development by Paramount Corp Bhd.

A contract to operate the hotel was signed by Super Ace Resources Sdn Bhd, a Paramount subsidiary, and Accor in April 2017.

The 13-storey hotel reportedly cost about RM75 million to develop and had been earmarked to complete in 2019.

The hotel held a soft opening on November 15, 2021.

KOTA KINABALU: Sandakan Tourism Association (STAN) and Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) jointly launched the "Discover A Great Deal More in Sandakan" promotional campaign to further boost tourist arrivals in the east coast town.

MAB group chief marketing and customer experience officer Lau Yin May said tourism has been progressively returning to full recovery as their #FlyConfidently campaign has recorded 75 to 80 per cent of seats booked for most flights.

With the upcoming festive season, she said it was an opportunity for Malaysians who recently redeemed the RM100 vouchers through the "Jom Cuti-Cuti Malaysia" campaign to use their vouchers on flights and enjoy their vacations to Sandakan and other parts of Sabah.

STAN president Teo Chee Kim said the special campaign would further promote Sandakan region domestically and to the Singapore market.

"Sandakan is well-known as the gateway to Borneo's wildlife.

"The name Sandakan may automatically conjure up the image of lush tropical rainforest, orang-utan, Bornean sun bear, proboscis monkey, pygmy elephant and more," he said in a statement.

He said culinary tourism was also gaining popularity in Sandakan with their fresh seafood and unique local pastries and beverages such as UFO tart and Avocado ABC.

There are numerous heritage sites with fascinating stories from British colonial period around the city waiting to be uncovered, he said.

"Through this campaign, we hope to diversify Sandakan's offerings and further strengthen Sandakan's destination awareness in the tourism circuit," said Teo.

The promotion ranging from airfare tickets, holidays packages and experiences open for booking from Aug 5 to 19, 2022, for immediate travel on March 31, 2023.

Domestic travellers will fly from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan with a special one-way fare of RM179.

Likewise, travellers from Singapore will also get a 15 per cent discount when flying to Sandakan via Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, MAB tour operating arm MHholidays is offering customers flight and holiday packages, including hotel stays starting from RM509 in selected hotels and destinations in Sandakan.

Reservations through the promotion could be made at https://holidays.malaysiaairlines.com/mhholidays-home.html from today until Aug 19.

STAN members such as Sabah Hotel, Pavilion Hotel, Borneo Eco Tours, Balin Rooftop Bar, San Da Gen Kopitiam, Urban Café and KITA Our Fresh Mart also offer travellers food and beverage at discounted prices or shopping vouchers.

Currently, MAS is operating 10 weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Sandakan and vice versa on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Majlis perasmian turut dihadiri Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Mohd. Ali Mohd. Rustam.

Sasar sektor kebudayaan sumbang RM300 juta

What About Kuching 2022 returns with strong arts and culture line-up

WAK2022 is a community-driven festival of the arts, culture and lifestyle of the people of Kuching and Sarawak; pictured The Possibility 2.0 Magic Show & Workshop by The Cartisan

The annual What About Kuching Festival (WAK2022) will break out of its two-year pandemic-induced hiatus with a fourth edition this October.

Endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, WAK2022 has seen strong support from potential programme collaborators.

Donald Tan, founding festival director of the WAK festival series, said: “At the close of proposal submission on July 31, WAK2022 received 69 proposals from 59 different collaborators covering 111 events of various genres including music, theatre, dance, arts and crafts, gastronomy, literary and culture, and not forgetting sporting events and eco-based adventure activities.

“We are very pumped up to see the amount of support we are getting, not only in terms of numbers but also the very high, world-class quality genres. We will now be closely engaging all collaborators to discuss further details and tighten the loose ends so we are all fully ready.”

WAK2022 is expected to bring a variety of events and activities to Kuching throughout October, making the Malaysian city and the larger Sarawak state even more exciting for visitors.

The final line-up will be announced in September.

Tan hopes WAK2022 will entice visitors who had missed out on some of Sarawak’s most iconic events earlier in the year, such as the Rainforest World Music Festival and Borneo Jazz Festival.

“WAK2022 will be your best opportunity to experience and be immersed in our rich culture and heritage, while satisfying your craving for musical, theatre and fine arts performances as we present both the old and the new. Gastronomy will be a big part of the festival too,” he added.
