Amal by Malaysia Airlines Partners with Indonesian Agents to Support 1447H Umrah Season

Amal by Malaysia Airlines (Amal), the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage arm of Malaysia Airlines, has formalised strategic partnerships with three prominent Indonesian travel agents to strengthen its presence in the Indonesian Umrah market for the 1447H Umrah season. The appointed agent, PT Mega Trans Universal (MTU), PT Syifa Wisata Jaya Persada (SWJP), and PT MKM Ticketing Travel & Tours Indonesia (MKM). The appointed agents bring with them established networks and deep market expertise, making them ideal partners in expanding Amal’s regional footprint across Indonesia.

These partnerships were officially formalised during signing ceremonies held recently in Balikpapan (BPN) and Makassar (UPG), and were attended by nearly 100 Indonesian agents, marking a strong show of support from key industry stakeholders. Also present was Muhammad Najmi Mansor, Chief Operating Officer of Amal by Malaysia Airlines, alongside senior representatives from the respective agents.

Under these partnerships, MTU and SJWP have been appointed as official agents for the Balikpapan region, while MTU and MKM will serve as the designated agents for Makassar. This strategic appointment enables Amal to strengthen its local presence and ensures that pilgrims travelling from Balikpapan and Makassar to Madinah or Jeddah via Kuala Lumpur have access to secure seat allocations along with premium services for their Umrah journeys. This arrangement provides operational stability and allows agents to confidently commit to early sales, facilitating better planning and marketing efforts.

Muhammad Najmi Mansor, Chief Operating Officer of Amal by Malaysia Airlines said, “We are delighted to formalise these partnerships with trusted Indonesian agents – MTU, SJWP, and MKM – who share our dedication to providing a seamless and spiritually fulfilling Umrah experience. Our passengers are at the heart of everything we do, and we strive to ensure that each pilgrim begins their sacred journey feeling supported, valued, and at ease. We look forward to deepening these relationships and growing together to position Amal the preferred gateway for pilgrims travelling through Kuala Lumpur, bringing comfort and peace of mind to pilgrims across Indonesia’s evolving Umrah market.”

In 2024, Amal successfully served over 180,000 pilgrims to the holy sites, including more than 25,000 Indonesian pilgrims - a reflection of the growing trust in Amal’s offerings from the Indonesian market. To further support this growth, Amal has expanded its network for Indonesian pilgrims by introducing twice-weekly flights from Ujung Pandang (UPG) and Balikpapan (BPN), which commenced in late 2024. These new routes add to the existing connectivity from Jakarta (CGK), Surabaya (SUB), Medan (KNO), Denpasar (DPS), Yogyakarta (YIA) and Pekanbaru (PKU).

Additionally, Amal’s collaboration with these agencies will offer competitively priced and comprehensive Umrah packages tailored to the diverse needs of Indonesian pilgrims, while upholding Amal’s premium service standards. The partnership also promises pilgrims improved connectivity, exclusive flights, and enhanced ground services.

Amal continues its focus on elevating pilgrim-centric services and delivering the “Mesra Ibadah” experience - a hallmark of its service excellence - which now extends to serve the Indonesian Umrah market that registers over one million pilgrims annually. This continued emphasis on spiritual fulfilment and quality service reinforces Amal’s mission to be a trusted partner throughout every pilgrim’s sacred journey.

Through this strengthened partnership, Amal reaffirms its dedication to facilitating a smooth and spiritually fulfilling journey for Indonesian pilgrims. The combined efforts are expected to set new benchmarks in Umrah travel services, further reinforcing the airlines as the preferred choice for pilgrims in the region. Looking ahead, Amal’s continued growth will depend on strengthening its network of trusted agencies and maintaining the highest standards of service – a core commitment that remains central to delivering an elevated pilgrimage experience.

AirAsia X targets Central Asia in expansion push

SEPANG: Medium-haul low-cost carrier AirAsia X Bhd plans to focus its flight network expansion on Central Asia, citing strong market potential and the region's status as relatively underserved by commercial airlines.

Chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail said the airline began flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan, in March last year and will launch a new route to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, this October. Another new destination is expected to be announced soon.

"The Central Asian market is still underserved. Not many airlines fly there. For example, without AirAsia X, getting to Almaty could take up to 18 hours — with AirAsia X, it's just eight hours on a direct flight.

"We're focusing on this region. We've started with Almaty, and another route is in development. We're also eyeing Turkiye, Azerbaijan and other Central Asian countries. Hopefully, this will eventually serve as a platform for expansion into Europe," he told reporters after launching the Kuala Lumpur–Tashkent route today.

Benyamin said Central Asia not only offers lower tourism costs but also rich historical and Islamic cultural value, making it attractive to Malaysian travellers.

He said the Tashkent route launch marked a strategic milestone in the airline's ongoing expansion across Asia and beyond.

"Central Asia holds great potential, with Uzbekistan's economy growing rapidly and a rising middle class keen to explore new destinations.

"We've seen strong demand for Central Asia travel following the success of the Almaty route.

"Our vision is to build a comprehensive network to support regional development, connect travellers to new destinations, and deliver unforgettable travel experiences," he said.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan's Ambassador to Malaysia, Karomidin Gadoev, said the launch of AirAsia X's direct flight to Tashkent was a significant development in Malaysia–Uzbekistan relations.

"With Uzbekistan's rapidly growing tourism sector and Malaysia's strong position as a tourism and business hub in Southeast Asia, this route will enhance connectivity, boost tourism exchanges, and offer new investment opportunities.

"We are delighted to welcome AirAsia X to this promising market and hope this collaboration yields positive results," he said.

According to AirAsia X, promotional fares for the new route start from RM99 for economy seats, available for booking between June 23 and 29, for travel from Oct 15, 2025, to Sept 14, 2026.

Located in the heart of Uzbekistan, the capital city of Tashkent is a rapidly developing destination known for its stunning Islamic architecture, bustling bazaars and lush green parks.

Kraftangan Malaysia perkasa dokumentasi kraf melalui inisiatif pendigitalan

Jakarta has greenlighted resumption of Pontianak-Kuching flights, says Sarawak minister

Sarawak Tourism, creative Industries and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah gives the thumbs up to this year's Rainforest World Music Festival. STR/BRUNO J

KUCHING: Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah said the Indonesian president had given the clearance to resume flights between the suspended Pontianak-Kuching route.

The route was suspended in the middle of March 2020 due to travel restrictions brought about by the Covid19 pandemic.

Despite being a temporary move, flights on the route remained stayed suspended even after travel restrictions were lifted as countries adapted to the pandemic.

"They're opening up their skies," Karim told journalists covering the Rainforest World Music Festival at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong.

"We've been asking and asking… restart the Pontianak-Kuching flights. But clearance was not given. "And recently, I was made to understand that they are opening up their skies," he added.

The minister said it's now up to the airlines to start operating the route again.

Karim said the route had much potential and it could be as profitable as the Kuching-Jakarta route. "The flight frequency from Kuching-Jakarta used to be once a day. Now, it's already twice a day. The (passenger) load is high either way. So, there's big potential there."

The route, he said, therefore does not benefit Sarawak only, but It will also benefit people in Pontianak.

"Instead of driving four to five hours (from Kuching ) to Pontianak, they might as well just fly half an hour. That will definitely benefit the tourism industry in Pontianak."

Sandakan set to launch Malaysia’s first Historical Tree Trail

SANDAKAN: Already renowned for its rich history, Sandakan is set to launch Malaysia’s first Historical Tree Trail, which will be officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records on June 28.

Developed in collaboration with the Sabah Forestry Department, the 3km Sandakan Heritage Trail features 42 historically significant trees, each tagged and QR-coded to enhance visitor experience and promote eco-heritage tourism.

The achievement was revealed during a courtesy call by Lai King Hang, the founder and Chairman of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, to the Sabah Forestry Department’s Chief Conservator of Forests, Datuk Frederick Kugan.

This is an excellent initiative that reflects innovation in both conservation and heritage tourism,” said Kugan, adding that the trail represents a new benchmark in eco-education and community involvement.

The launch event, which is expected to draw over 200 participants from all walks of life, will begin at Masjid Jamik and make a key stop at Agnes Keith’s House, where the Malaysia Book of Records certificate will be officially presented.

The trail will be officiated by the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) President Walter Kenson.

Organised by the Sandakan Heritage Trail Committee and the Sandakan Tourism Association (Stan), with full support from the Sandakan Municipal Council and various voluntary groups, the event represents a significant milestone for Sandakan’s growing eco-tourism sector.

Lai noted that in addition to the historic trees, the public will also enjoy views of restored colonial buildings such as Agnes Keith’s House, as well as places of worship, including the 100-year-old Masjid Jamik, the Goddess of Mercy Chinese Temple, St. Michael’s and All Angels Church and the Sam Sing Kung (Three Saints) Temple.

The two-hour walk along the Sandakan Heritage Trail will conclude at Wisma Warisan at the MPS Square, and include several other cultural landmarks along the way.

Also present at the courtesy call were the department’s Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests, Dr Arthur Chung, senior officers, a senior team member of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, as well as representatives from Stan and the Sabah Society Sandakan.

Merapoh syurga gua batu kapur

The inaugural ASEAN Travel Exchange (ATEX) 2025 will take place at The Magellan Sutera Resort, Kota Kinabalu, from June 19 to 21, marking a significant milestone in regional tourism collaboration and recovery efforts.

The event is organised by leading South-east Asia’s tourism bodies, including the ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA), Federation of ASEAN Travel Associations (FATA), and the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA). It is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, Sabah Tourism Board, Sabah Convention Bureau, and strategic partners AirAsia Group and Jetama Water.

Sellers represent seven ASEAN member states – Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam – and cover sectors such as accommodation, transport, attractions, and destination management services.

FATA president Tan Kok Liang said: “This is a timely event that not only aligns with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 but also positions Sabah as a central player in ASEAN’s multi-destination travel ecosystem. ATEX supports ASEAN connectivity goals by facilitating increased visitor flows and regional cooperation. It also reinforces Sabah’s growing reputation as a premier business events destination, helping to enhance its international visibility and economic prospects.”

June 20 will be dedicated to B2B speed-dating sessions between buyers and sellers. On June 21, hosted buyers will take part in curated post-show tours designed to showcase Sabah’s cultural, natural, and island attractions.

Tan added: “The post-tours are designed to give buyers immersive experiences and a deeper understanding of Sabah’s tourism offerings. It’s not just about selling a destination, it’s about experiencing it.”

Looking ahead, Tan confirmed that there are plans for ATEX to become a recurring ASEAN tourism trade event, rotating among member countries. The continuation and future host of the event will depend on the outcomes of this first edition, with factors such as stakeholder feedback, participation, and regional interest playing a role in decisions going forward.

Malaysia Airlines Enhances Bonus Side Trip for International Travellers

Malaysia Airlines continues to redefine the travel experience with its innovative Bonus Side Trip (BST) programme, offering international travellers the opportunity to explore Malaysia’s hidden gems at no extra fare. Whether transiting through Kuala Lumpur or planning an extended stay, travellers can explore a second Malaysian destination effortlessly, experiencing more of the country’s cultural richness, natural landscapes, and authentic local hospitality.

Available to Malaysia Airlines’ international passengers who travel through Kuala Lumpur, BST offers a domestic return flight to one of seven selected Malaysian destinations at no extra fare. Travellers can choose to stop over in Langkawi, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Alor Star, Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bharu before continuing to the last leg of their journey. Unlike traditional stopover packages, BST is fully integrated into the ticket fare and booking journey, turning every international journey into a multi-destination Malaysian adventure.

Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer of Airlines, Malaysia Aviation Group said, “As the national carrier, Malaysia Airlines invites global travellers to experience more and uncover the vibrant beauty of Malaysia through a side trip to one of seven handpicked domestic destinations. The Bonus Side Trip reflects our commitment to championing Malaysia as a preferred destination in Asia. It goes beyond connectivity, curating experiences that extend our Malaysian Hospitality into every corner of the country.”

The Bonus Side Trip programme is part of Malaysia Airlines’ broader strategy to support Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and stimulate sustainable tourism growth. The initiative is designed to encourage domestic exploration beyond Malaysia’s capital, allowing international travellers to explore secondary destinations that are rich in culture, heritage, and natural beauty. By strengthening the connection between international arrivals and local tourism economies, the programme drives inclusive growth and supports businesses and communities across the country. It also reinforces Malaysia Airlines’ role as the gateway to Asia and beyond, seamlessly bridging international access with local discovery.

Coinciding with the Malaysia Airlines Trade Elevation Summit held in Langkawi this week, the airline hosted a group of international key opinion leaders (KOLs) from Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia, India and Korea to experience Langkawi as a featured Bonus Side Trip destination. Their curated itinerary brought the island to life through immersive experiences that included the UNESCO-certified Kilim Geoforest Park, Langkawi SkyCab, sunset cruises, and authentic local crafts, showcasing the island’s blend of nature, culture, and lifestyle.

The specially curated journey offered a taste of what makes Langkawi a standout destination, where nature, culture, and hospitality come together to create a truly Malaysian holiday experience. Through this immersive visit, Malaysia Airlines demonstrated how the Bonus Side Trip transforms a single international journey into something far more memorable.

The Bonus Side Trip reflects the airline’s unwavering commitment to delivering its signature Malaysian Hospitality at every step of the touchpoint. As Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaches, this unique offering by Malaysia Airlines invites international travellers to discover more of Malaysia’s charm, seamlessly and meaningfully.

Travellers are encouraged to book with Malaysia Airlines and unlock the added value of exploring a second destination, all in one unforgettable trip. For more details and to book exclusive travel deals, please visit www.malaysiaairlines.com.

Sabah introduces new diving safety SOPs ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry has established a set of safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) for scuba diving activities in the state.

The move underscores the government's commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism in the lead-up to the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.

Sabah Dive Squad Club president Sim Fui welcomed the initiative, describing it as both timely and crucial in enhancing diver safety while supporting the state's tourism industry.

"Sabah is renowned for its beautiful diving spots from the state capital, Sepanggar, Kota Belud, Kudat, Lahad Datu, to Semporna.

"According to the Sabah Fisheries Department, the scuba diving industry has contributed over RM500 million to the state's revenue. That figure is a significant boost to Sabah's economy.

"However, it is concerning when diving accidents occur, especially those involving international visitors. Strengthening SOP compliance is essential to maintain our reputation as a world-class diving destination," he said in a statement.

Sim and the committee members from the club had paid a courtesy visit to the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Datuk Josie Lai at Wisma Tun Fuad Stephens here yesterday.

During the meeting, Lai had said that the ministry expressed its intention to release the SOP publicly soon and welcomed the club's support in educating industry stakeholders.

In line with this, the Sabah Dive Squad Club will be organising a safety and medical talk for its members on July 20, aiming to raise awareness and reinforce best practices among divers and operators.

The event follows recent incidents involving diver fatalities, some of which have been attributed to negligence.

"We welcome this collaboration with the ministry and will incorporate the updated SOPs into our upcoming safety talk.

"By engaging more stakeholders, particularly dive operators who work directly with clients, we hope to minimise diving accidents as much as possible."
