Experience Malaysia Like Never Before”.

The campaign will take effect from 31st December 2020 until 31st March 2021 and will offer holiday-goers attractive e-vouchers for hotel rooms. The minute Malaysians travel, they create the spillover effect that will revive our national economy.”

Mr. Yap Lip Seng, CEO of Malaysia Association of Hotels, said, “We have more than 400 hotels from one- to five-stars all over the country offering special room rates and on top of that, Malaysians can now take advantage of the e-vouchers courtesy of the Government of Malaysia! This is an opportunity not to be missed to secure your dream Cuti-Cuti Malaysia getaway, at the same time sow a little seed of hope for the hotel industry of Malaysia that has been heavily impacted by the pandemic.”

“Now that the country has transitioned into the economic recovery phase, both Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysian Association of Hotels have a heavy task of ensuring that the tourism industry is revived. As a business that prioritises the needs of local communities, Shopee is topping up our support for the associations and hoteliers. We will also be waiving off all commissions and transaction charges on our platform for this campaign as an added boost for the industry players. Along with the attractive e-vouchers from the government, we believe the hoteliers will be poised for steady recovery,” said Mr. Ian Ho, Regional Managing Director of Shopee.

Tourism players preparing for rebound

KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism industry players are pinning their hopes on 2021, and the reopening of international borders tops their wish list.

But while waiting for that to happen, they are eager to make the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry's domestic travel bubble initiative a success.

Sunway Malls and Theme Parks is hoping to cash in on the year-end festive season and school holidays to kick-start the 2021 financial year.

Chief executive officer H.C. Chan said targeting domestic travellers during this period could revive the industry while waiting for the international borders to reopen.

"We foresee some business recovery with the festive season and school holidays this year, and perhaps again at the beginning of next year for the Lunar New Year.

"We hope to see a V-shaped recovery in the fourth quarter of this year, similar to what we saw during the first Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

"From there, we expect the recovery to be slow, gradual and protracted in the first half of next year. With the introduction of the vaccines, we expect the recovery to reach 90 per cent of normalcy in the second half of 2021.

"Our footfall and sales hit a normalisation rate of around 50 to 60 per cent across our malls in the first week of this month.

"We are expecting a better performance by our malls as the CMCO restrictions are gradually eased," he told the New Straits Times.

Reflecting on 2020, Chan said the tourism industry must maintain "gold standards" of safety, health and hygiene to survive potential outbreaks.

"For Sunway Malls and Theme Parks, these three aspects have always been a priority.

"Hence, we were quick to roll out safety and hygiene measures with our partners, increasing the frequency of sanitisation operations and installing thermal scanners during the first round of the MCO in March."

Meanwhile, Genting Malaysia said the completion of its outdoor theme park, Genting Skyworlds, will be its top priority next year.

The theme park, targeted to open in mid-2021, will house international-class movie-themed attractions and feature, among others, movies from 20th Century Fox.

"The implementation of the CMCO in a majority of the states in Malaysia has affected our business this year.

"However, we have re-engineered our processes to create a safe environment for all our visitors, employees, business partners and the community," its spokesman said.

The aviation sector also shares similar hopes after the pandemic kept it grounded for most of this year.

Malaysia Airlines group chief executive officer Captain Izham Ismail said the airline would focus on three aspects in 2021: assist global vaccine distribution, reconnect global economies and revitalise businesses to help workers.

"We will also continue to support the government's initiatives to encourage domestic holidays and travels with ongoing promotions while we prepare for the gradual reopening of international borders.

"We remain hopeful for the global aviation industry to return to its pre-Covid-19 situation, faster than our prediction of recovery in Q2 to Q3 2022 for the domestic and Asean market, with the international (or intercontinental) market recovering in 2024."

Moving forward, Izham called on airline companies to strive towards making the aviation industry pandemic-resilient.

"Airline companies should have better contingency plans and establish better fences around the company to absorb shocks, and they need to be flexible to operation changes accordingly.

"Preparing for the digital workforce is also paramount, hence more investment in upskilling and reskilling employees needs to run in tandem.

"The aviation industry will prosper once again if we come out of this crisis more prepared."

Penang launches Tourism Recovery tactical campaign

GEORGE TOWN: In a bid to revive the tourism industry, which has been badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, Penang and AirAsia today announced a new collaboration.

The collaboration will offer more travel options and value-added services to domestic tourists visiting the state.

It features flights and hotel combos covering more than 25 hotels, from as low as RM49 per person for a 3D2N stay.

For those who prefer a more luxurious stay at four to five star hotels, there are also affordable deals from RM179/pax with 3D2N stay.

The campaign takes place from tomorrow until Sunday for travel periods valid from Jan 4 to March 31, next year.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the state has been observing a positive rebound in tourism activities after inter-state travel was allowed.

"We are working towards accelerating the recovery of tourism, supporting jobs and the economy and increasing tourism receipts.

"Partnering with key travel players like Airasia.com will assist us to amplify our efforts and to offer more diverse travel and tourism products by leveraging on their product offerings," he said in his office in Komtar.

Present were Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan and AirAsia regional commercial head Tan Mai Yin.

Elaborating, Yeow said the hotels in the lower category included Brown and May Hotel here and Sunway Seberang Jaya on the mainland.

He added that the more luxurious hotels included Golden Sands and Hard Rock.

Penang, said Yeoh, is committed to putting all safety measures in place while sustaining efforts to revive Penang's travel industry.

Meanwhile, Tan said AirAsia has been observing significant surge in flight bookings since the lifting of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in the state recently.

"We see high traffic coming into AirAsia, and here at AirAsia, we are ready to meet the demands. In fact, we are set for full recovery," she said.

Citing an example, Tan said the Kuala Lumpur-Penang route has seen an increase to 35 flights weekly now from 10 during the CMCO, with other routes like Johor Baru-Penang (25 flights weekly now from 10 during the CMCO) and Langkawi-Penang (from seven to 25 flights weekly) also seeing an increase.

Dasar Pelancongan Negara (DPN) 2020 - 2030: Ke Arah Pengukuhan Industri Pelancongan Negara

23 Disember 2020 - YAB Tan Sri Dato' Hj. Muhyiddin Bin Hj. Mohd.

i. transformasi tadbir urus
ii. mewujudkan zon pelaburan bagi projek pelancongan yang inklusif;
iii. mempergiatkan digitalisasi pelancongan;
iv. memperkayakan pengalaman dan kepuasan pelancong;

The Mind Ecotourism Destination of the World.

Hotels offering great deals

KUALA LUMPUR: The hotel industry is hoping that people will reinstate cancelled plans for year-end holidays, with the lifting of the travel ban since Dec 7.

Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) chief executive officer Yap Lip Seng yesterday said the government's decision was timely and that locals should take advantage of deals and promotions that hotels had organised for the domestic market.

"While locals will target popular destinations such as Langkawi, Penang, Ipoh and Genting Highlands, we are confident Malaysians will find other less-travelled destinations in the country with exciting offers from hotels and tourism players."

Yap, however said, the Klang Valley, particularly Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, with its extended Conditional Movement Control Order until Dec 20, and daily increases in Covid-19 cases, would not see much improvement in tourism activities.

He said the average hotel occupancy rate for this month was expected to be 30 per cent and unlikely to exceed the projected figure.

Based on MAH's latest survey on Oct 16, the hotel occupancy rate this month in mainland Kedah and Perlis is expected to be 9.78 per cent, Langkawi (27.76 per cent), Penang (28.89 per cent), Perak (39.77 per cent), Selangor (34.33 per cent), Kuala Lumpur (27.32 per cent), Negri Sembilan (42.24 per cent), Melaka (38.86 per cent), Johor (37.83 per cent), Pahang (27.31 per cent), Terengganu (24.79 per cent), Kelantan (29.13 per cent), Sabah (13.64 per cent) and Sarawak (28.62 per cent).

On Dec 5, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced that interstate and interdistrict travel would be allowed from Dec 7, except for areas under the Enhanced Movement Control Order.

The much-awaited nod, according to the tourism industry players, would allow them to get their businesses back on track.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri had said the tourism industry suffered losses amounting to RM45 billion from January to June.

She said tourism was one of the sectors hardest hit by the coronavirus and was expected to be the last to recover.

On projections for next year, Yap said with international borders still restricted, the industry was expected to be highly dependent on domestic tourism.

"However, due to the low yield of domestic travel, the tourism industry, especially hotels, can only hope to survive with domestic revenue, with little or no profits whatsoever."

He added that since the spike in Covid-19 cases at the end of September until Oct 16, 63.10 per cent of hotels in the country suffered cancellation of events.

"This has resulted in loss of revenue worth RM35.6 million."

He said the strategy to offer special and discounted deals with flexible stay periods and terms could help hotels with immediate cash flow.

However, he said, for the medium and long terms, wider and inclusive strategies were needed.

"The industry will need international travel bubbles to be established as soon as possible.

"We need a blueprint on reopening borders, with selected bubbles and their corresponding set of requirements such as special insurance, healthcare deposits, as well as movement tracking guidelines and mechanism.

"These will ensure minimal interruptions to travel itineraries while remaining under the close observation of the health authorities."

Endau Rompin nominated as Asean Heritage Park

Endau Rompin National Park (TNJER) in Johor has been nominated as an Asean Heritage Park (AHP), which will make it Malaysia’s fourth national park to be declared as a protected ecological area. - NSTP file pic

KUALA LUMPUR: Endau Rompin National Park (TNJER) in Johor has been nominated as an Asean Heritage Park (AHP), which will make it Malaysia's fourth national park to be declared as a protected ecological area.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said 90 per cent of TNJER is covered with tropical rainforest, and is a well-preserved ecosystem with almost the whole protected area surrounded by forest reserves.

The three other AHPs in the country are the National Park (Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu), Kinabalu National Park (Sabah), and Gunung Mulu National Park (Sarawak).

"TNJER's nomination as an AHP will, among other things, improve the image of TNJER as an important conservation area in Johor, and a second national park in the peninsula.

"It will also strengthen TNJER's management based on best management practices on par with regional and international management of protected areas, and improve the network and cooperation between protected areas locally and internationally.

"The ministry will present nomination documents to the AHP secretariat in the Philippines to be considered by the Asean working group and approved by Asean ministers in 2021," he said in a statement today.

Shamsul said TNJER contains 80 threatened plant species listed under the Endangered Species International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, including 38 critically-endangered species, 16 endangered species, and 26 vulnerable species.

He added that TNJER is also an important habitat for the conservation of large threatened mammals, especially the Malayan Tiger, the Malayan Tapir, the Malayan Sun Bear and the Asian Elephant.

TNJER's nomination, he said, mirrors Malaysia's efforts in preserving and recognising protected areas as invaluable national treasures.

This effort, he said, is also in line with Asean's hopes that protective conservation measures are made to maintain ecological process and genetic diversity, ensure the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as preserve the environment in terms of culture, education, research, recreation, and ecotourism.
