AirAsia enters Malaysia’s ride-hailing scene
AirAsia has
expanded into the ride-hailing market in Malaysia with the launch of AirAsia
Ride, the group’s newest offering under its super app.
Services are
currently available in the Klang Valley, with expansion to more cities in
Malaysia planned throughout the year. The AirAsia Ride e-hailing service can be
booked by clicking on the ‘Ride’ icon on the AirAsia Super App, or via the
website airasia.com/ride.
Amanda Woo, CEO of
AirAsia Super App, said: “AirAsia Ride inherits the DNA of running a low-cost
model which enables savings to be passed on to guests and strives to offer the
lowest fares on the road, introducing great value to the highly competitive
e-hailing ecosystem.”
Lim Chiew Shan, CEO
of AirAsia Ride Malaysia, commented: “What sets AirAsia Ride apart from others
in the market would be the unique insights and data that we have due to our position
as a super app that owns an airline, and have strong vertical products on
e-commerce, fintech, logistics, and now e-hailing.
“This enables us to
leverage on AirAsia Group’s rich and vast data and algorithm to provide a
seamless and connected journey experience for our passengers where they will be
able to perform in-path booking for both their flights and pre-book their ride
to the airport and even for their return journey at the same time, all within
the convenience of one single itinerary and without having to leave the AirAsia
Super App.”
Lim added that
passengers will soon be able to use their BIG Points to pay for their rides,
and can also choose their preferred vehicle type and even drivers. AirAsia Ride
boasts a 100 per cent fully-vaccinated driver fleet.
Currently, AirAsia
Ride has about 1,500 registered drivers, and with its nationwide expansion,
another 5,000 are expected to come onboard in the next six months, said Lim.
Drivers take 85 per cent of the net fares, higher than other ride-hailing
providers in the market, according to a release.
Fares on AirAsia Ride
are set at an average of RM1 (US$0.24) per kilometre, and passengers are able
to book on-demand rides, or even pre-book their rides in advance. A special
feature allows passengers to book an ‘Allstar Ride’ and be chauffeur driven by
AirAsia pilots and cabin crew.

PATA unveils 8-point tourism recovery plan
To support
Asia-Pacific’s tourism industry in rebounding from the Covid-19 crisis, PATA
has announced its 8-Point Industry Recovery Plan to address both the immediate
and strategic needs of its members and the broader industry.
1. PATA Crisis
Resource Center
Launched in May 2020, this resource centre is available to all travel sector
members and provides various playbooks for various industries ranging from
aviation to hospitality, covering several topics including communications
resources and sector resource kits.
2. Government
members-only roundtable
Earlier this month, PATA launched a roundtable series to share insights and
exchange ideas across destinations on restarting travel. The first session of
this series featured presentations by select destinations, including Hawaii,
the Maldives, and Thailand. The second session just held on August 17 featured
COVAX/UNICEF with a briefing on vaccine equity, deployment measures and
community acceptance strategies.
In the coming weeks
and months, PATA will continue to support its destination members by sourcing
subject matter experts and supporting a pan-regional and global dialogue to
support the industry recovery.
3. Innovation
Workshop Series and Innovation Hub for members
PATA has just launched an Innovation Series of workshop-style webinars designed
to deliver practical information to members. Upcoming topics will range from
digital marketing, Covid-19 safety best practices, leadership and resiliency
skills, destination development, and more.
PATA’s website now
also features the Travel Innovations Hub, comprising crowd-sourced travel
innovation ideas from around the globe, designed to engage and inspire its
members.
4. Ongoing industry
trends and forecasts for members
With the ever-changing status of multiple elements influencing tourism
recovery, PATA recognises the need for frequent and diverse expert-advised
trends and forecast reporting. Through live webinars and research reports
supported by its vast network of industry experts, PATA will continue to
regularly deliver expert-sourced intelligence reporting to keep members
informed.
5. Vaccine equity
initiative supporting COVAX/UNICEF
A foundational element to tourism recovery is vaccine equity, deployment, and
acceptance across the region and beyond. As such, PATA is supporting the
COVAX/UNICEF initiative in the form of advocacy, industry education,
fundraising and, if required, logistics sourcing.
6. PATA global
community connection
Like the rest of the world, PATA has pivoted from offline/real-life
interactions at physical events to online webinars. The association has started
hosting hybrid events and will continue to deliver in-destination physical
events wherever possible; and complement it by leveraging technology platforms
and content to bring its members together globally and in smaller forums to
support their business development.
7. Knowledge share
and collaboration with global organisations
PATA is in regular collaboration with World Bank, ADB, GIZ and other
development organisations and consulting firms on industry leading topics to
support the recovery. The association regularly engages with the global tourism
and travel task force meetings along with leaders from WTTC, IATA, ACI, WEF,
ICAO and others.
8. PATA’s
destination resilience initiative
In conjunction with GIZ, the programme initiated development in June with PATA
project managing an expert team of 20 subject matter experts. This framework
addresses the pillars for resilience including: environment, economy,
community, visitors and health & safety. The pilot will be launched in four
PATA member destinations.

Eight holiday destinations in Pahang ready to welcome tourists
ROMPIN: Eight tourist destinations across Pahang are ready to reopen their doors to visitors, pending the green light from the National Security Council (NSC).
Tourism Pahang general manager Kamaruddin Ibrahim said the chosen holiday spots which have achieved herd immunity against Covid-19 will be reopened to visitors in stages.
"Since inter-district travel is allowed, people in Pahang can now travel to the tourist destinations but they will not be able to participate in any outdoor or leisure activities. For example, those who have a completed two vaccine doses can board the ferry to Pulau Tioman but they cannot go out snorkeling and scuba diving...they will be forced to remain in their chalets or hotels.
"To date, eight tourist destinations are prepared to reopen and receive visitors. The operators have provided the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be studied and agreed by the NSC. To avoid emergence of tourism clusters, the opening of the eight destinations will be done in stages," he told reporters at Dewan Kuala Rompin near here today.
Kamaruddin was met after accompanying Tioman assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Hussain to distribute Bantuan Prihatin Pahang (BPP) Covid-19 aid to 107 boat operators and tour guides here.
The eight destinations which are prepared to open their doors to tourists are Pulau Tioman and Taman Negeri Rompin (both in Rompin), Genting Highlands and Janda Baik (both in Bentong), Fraser's Hill( Raub), Taman Negara (Jerantut), Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre (Temerloh) and Cameron Highlands.
Meanwhile Kamaruddin said the tourism SOPs at holiday destinations under the new normal will no longer allow the maximum number of occupants staying in one room or travelling on a passenger boat.
"There will be a limit on the number of participants in all the activities both indoor and outdoor, and this is to avoid overcrowding. We will no longer follow the boat capacity but set a limit to adhere to the new SOPs.
"Everything will be done systematically and will be well-planned....from the time visitors arrive at their destination until they leave. Tourists will be required to register in advance, confirm their accommodation and equipment rental," he said.
Meanwhile, Johari, who is also the State Human Resource, Sports and Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) committee chairman said Pulau Tioman was expected to be reopened for visitors before the end of this month.
"We hope to open the island before the monsoon season which is expected to hit in late October. Ninety-five per cent of the island's population rely on tourism as a source of income including boat, chalet and tour operators.
"Tioman used to receive about 200,000 visitors a year but now due to the pandemic, no one is going there anymore. Plans to reopen the island were discussed during the Pahang executive council meeting yesterday so we hope it can be made a reality soon," he said.

Olympic Games and the national football squad, Harimau Malaya to the World Cup
2022 and Asia Cup 2023 qualifiers in UAE and Bahrain.

All Malaysia Airlines’ Operating Pilots and Cabin Crew Are Vaccinated
KLIA, 17 August 2021: Malaysia Aviation
Group (MAG) today achieved a significant milestone in its Company-wide COVID-19
vaccination campaign when its main carrier, Malaysia Airlines, recorded a 100
per cent vaccinated status for all its pilots and cabin crew on active roster.
MAG
through its COVID-19 Immunization Policy in July 2021 had made it compulsory
for all employees to be vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine except for those
with health and medical reasons. Through its participation in the aviation
industry vaccination programme at PPVIN-KLIA, the Group managed to accelerate
the rate of its Malaysia-based employee vaccination which currently stands at
95%. The State governments of Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of
Labuan have also expedited the provision of vaccines for its East
Malaysia-based employees, through the District PPV Programme.
Group Chief Executive
Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group, Captain Izham Ismail, said, "As
a responsible employer, it is our duty to ensure a safe and healthy working
environment to our employees. This latest milestone signifies our commitment to
the safety of our people and customers as travel restart and recovery are
dependent on achieving a herd immunity community.
This latest progress aims to provide passengers with the assurance and peace of mind that they can choose to travel with any airline under the MAG, confidently. We will continue to boost public confidence in air travel, stimulate the recovery in domestic and international travel demands, and ultimately position Malaysia as a safe destination once the situation recedes.”
The vaccination programme for the employees is in addition to the enhanced safety and health protocols across multiple touchpoints at airports and onboard, as recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization Council of Aviation Recovery Task Force (ICAO CART), to ensure customers and employees' safety are protected at every step of the way.
Among the measures in place include mandatory usage of face masks, frequent aircraft disinfection, and early replacement of aircraft HEPA filters to ensure effective air circulation system with the capability to filter out 99.97 per cent of microorganisms on board. Passengers will also receive complimentary hygiene kits which come with a non-surgical face mask, a sachet of hand sanitiser and sanitary wipes, hygienically packed in a sealed zip-lock small sized pouch.

Red Carpet @ i-City a boon to Selangor's tourism sector
Malaysia's first megastar interactive wax museum the Red Carpet Wax Museum is a boon to the growing list of tourist attractions in i-City and Selangor's tourism sector.
The 3,000 square feet Red Carpet Wax Museum features over 100 wax figures of famous people from history and contemporary personalities of today.
An inspection by Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) concludes that there's no wax figure of a Chinese communist leader there, as reported in a blog recently.
In a statement, MBSA said it has conducted an inspection at the museum and found that the premises had been closed since March 2020, due to the Movement Control Order that was implemented following the Covid-19 pandemic.
"In this regard, MBSA seeks cooperation from the public to obtain accurate and authentic facts before publishing any information, either through social media platforms or mass media, because it can confuse the public," MBSA said.
The Red Carpet Wax Museum is part of Leisure Park @ i-City, Malaysia No 1 Technology City.
Leisure Park @ i-City started with the City of Digital Lights in December 2009 and, over the years, major attractions such as SnowWalk, WaterWorld, Red Carpet, and Red Carpet 2 were added to enhance the development.
The wax museum opened in 2013 and has attracted both local and international tourists.
The Oscar-like awards setting is categorised according to six themes – World Icons, Celebrities, Sport Stars, World Book of Records, All Stars Café, and Interactive.
The wax characters cover everything from K Pop to royalty, and Hollywood to Bollywood.

KLIA & Langkawi International Airport Are World’s No.1 For Q2 2021
SEPANG – KL International Airport
(KLIA) and Langkawi International Airport (LGK) are the world’s No.1 airports
for Q2 2021 in the latest global Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey by
Airports Council International (ACI). Both airports achieved a perfect score of
5.0/5.0 in the industry survey that benchmarks the world’s best airports in
terms of facilities and service standards. KLIA was previously in the 9th spot,
scoring 4.99/5.0 for Q1 in the over 40 million passengers per annum (mppa)
category whereas LGK was in 3rd spot with the score of 4.97/5.00 in the 2-5
mppa category. The global achievement by these two airports is highly
significant and marks the organisation’s commitment in ensuring world-class
passenger experiences.
According to group chief executive officer (Group CEO) of
Malaysia Airports, Dato’ Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh, “At KLIA, these encouraging
results are a testament to the company’s efforts in continuously maintaining
exceptional services and implementing safety measures while it prepares for
travel resumption. Major initiatives contributing to the improved performance
include the strict implementation of new travel SOPs that heightened a safe and
secure travel experience and the opening of 64 newly refurbished washrooms for
the continued comfort of passengers. As for LGK, the refreshed and
improved ambience of the terminal resulting from its successful commercial
reset initiative continues to contribute to the overall satisfaction of
passengers passing through the terminal.”
The airport operator is seeing a gradual uptrend in passenger
numbers by recording a 35% increase from the preceding month for overall
traffic growth in July 2021. Last month, the Malaysia Airports group surpassed
the 3 million mark at 3.3 million total passenger movements for its network of
airports for the first time this year with the majority traffic contributed by
its Turkish asset, Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISG). With the
easing of border restrictions and curfews, ISG saw a 35% increase in its total
passenger movements at 3 million when compared to the preceding month, reaching
89% of its pre-COVID performance. In fact, the airport’s July 2021 domestic
passenger movement performance at 2 million was extremely encouraging as it
exceeded the passenger volume for any month pre-COVID in 2019 with 1.5% growth
over July 2019.
On the local front, Malaysia Airports recorded nearly 40%
increase in total passenger movements at about 260,000 (International: 72,000;
Domestic: 188,000) last month as compared to June 2021 for its network of
airports here.
Despite the continued interstate travel ban, border closure, and
stricter travel restrictions around the region following new outbreak of cases,
the marginal increase is a positive break for Malaysia Airports following the
recent Government of Malaysia’s announcement allowing flexibility for those
fully vaccinated to travel interstate as well as the reopening of domestic
tourism within the same state (for states that have progressed to Phase 2) from
10 August onwards. The airport operator is also looking forward to the pilot
project of Langkawi Island emulating the Phuket Sandbox Model by inoculating
80% of the island’s population in a move to open the island to fully vaccinated
tourists. Apart from that, there is also the possibility of the resumption of
domestic tourism activities across Malaysia in September that will provide the
much-needed stimulus to the airports, airline partners and the tourism
industry.

Agoda pilots Vaxxed To Go campaign in Malaysia
In support of Malaysia’s nationwide immunisation
drive, Agoda has launched the Vaxxed To Go campaign incentivising travellers
who are fully vaccinated with special travel deals and benefits.
Through this campaign, Agoda hopes to galvanise
other travel and hospitality stakeholders to come together and play a part in
helping the country return to normalcy.
The Vaxxed To Go
campaign follows the implementation of Malaysia’s National Recovery Plan, which
places vaccination as one of the three key threshold indicators to determine
the gradual reopening of economic and social activities.
Malaysia currently
boasts one of the fastest vaccination rates in the world with its National
Covid-19 Immunisation Programme. As of July 31, around 64 per cent of the
country’s eligible population have registered for their vaccine shots.
With Agoda’s Vaxxed
To Go initiative, accommodation providers on the platform will be able to get
behind the national vaccination effort and benefit from bookings from
vaccinated travellers.
Participating properties
will benefit from increased visibility and exposure from Agoda’s marketing
efforts for the campaign, which will span across a range of channels including
social media, banner promotions, and pop-ups. Consumers will also be able to
easily browse through Vaxxed to Go packages on dedicated landing pages.
“After months of
lockdown and movement restrictions, many Malaysians are no doubt looking
forward to travelling again as it becomes safe to do so,” said Cleland
Robertson, country director, Malaysia and Brunei, Agoda.
“Malaysians have
always had a healthy appetite for travel, so promoting the concept of ‘Vaxxed
To Go’ – exclusive deals for vaccinated travellers – which offer exclusive
great value deals, Agoda hopes to encourage more Malaysians to feel safe and
confident to travel again, and to get their Covid-19 shots.”
He added: “Aside
from safeguarding public health, increased inoculation rates will be crucial in
kickstarting the recovery of the nation’s economy as a whole and particularly
that of the travel and hospitality sector. Agoda also hopes to inspire other
industry players to play their part in helping Malaysia achieve herd immunity
as soon as possible.”
With Vaxxed To Go,
hotel partners will be able to offer discounted rates to fully vaccinated
travellers when domestic travels are allowed, alongside value-added perks such
as room upgrades and F&B discounts. Properties may also list special
packages for on-site experiences, from resort activities to spa and wellness
deals.
Vaxxed To Go is an
extension of the Agoda Spofecial Offers offering, which was launched in May in
several other markets. With Malaysia as its pilot market for the campaign,
Agoda said that it aims to roll out Vaxxed To Go in more markets in the months
to come.

Tourism activities allowed for those fully vaccinated in states no longer under Phase 1
KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism activities involving homestays and hotels within the same state will be allowed in states that have transitioned out of Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) for fully-vaccinated individuals from Tuesday (Aug 10).
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said these individuals are required to furnish their digital vaccination certificates before being allowed to enter such premises.
"The government is ready to provide privileges to individuals who are fully-vaccinated after taking into consideration feedback from the Health Ministry.
"This decision was made carefully and in line with data gathered in the country on the effectiveness of full vaccination, as well as public health measures adopted globally," he said while announcing relaxation of conditions for fully-vaccinated people during a live broadcast today.
He said the authorities have set two criteria in allowing privileges for fully-vaccinated individuals.
He said 14 days must have passed for those who receive the two-dose vaccine types, namely Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sinovac as the first criteria.
Secondly, for single-dose vaccine recipients, namely, Johnson & Johnson and Cansino, they will be acccorded the privileges 28 days after the injection date.

of what Malaysia has to offer as a leading tourist destination in Asia.
Visit
Malaysia Year 1990 - "To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia" and 7.4
million in tourist arrivals.
With that unforgettable song, Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) was
first launched in 1990 with the theme "Fascinating Malaysia. Year of
Festivals". The campaign was a huge success with Malaysia charting 7.4
million in tourist arrivals compared to 4.8 million in 1989. To enable tourists
to easily recognize Malaysia, an orang utan, being an endangered species found
in East Malaysia, was used as a mascot and it was named Wira. Meanwhile, Kuala
Lumpur’s famous landmark, the Sultan Abdul Samad building, was featured as the official
logo of VMY 1990. Malaysia’s Independence Day celebrated on August 31 of that
year was the anchor for 84 major events, 14 festivals, and nine vibrant
exhibitions.
Visit
Malaysia Year 1994 - "Fascinating Malaysia. Naturally More" and 10.22
million in tourist arrivals.
The success of VMY 1990 spurred another VMY in 1994. This time
around, the theme was "Fascinating Malaysia. Naturally More". VMY
1994 maintained the words "Fascinating Malaysia" for its theme but
injected an additional punchline "Naturally More", to reflect more
exciting events lined up for that year.
Visit
Malaysia Year 2007 - "Malaysia Truly Asia" and 20.97 million in
tourist arrivals
The third VMY was launched in 2007 in conjunction with the
celebration of Malaysia’s 50th Year of Independence. Hence, the theme
"Celebrating 50 years of Nationhood" was befitting to reflect this
important anniversary celebration. Efforts were also intensified in all
advertising and promotional activities, including the call for action "The
time is now. The place is Malaysia" together with its simple yet impactful
slogan "Malaysia Truly Asia". In line with the 50th Anniversary of
Malaysia’s Independence, over 200 events were held across the country with 50
major events showcasing Malaysia’s wealth of tourism attractions. All in all,
VMY 2007 charted tremendous success beyond expectations, recording 20.97
million in tourist arrivals and RM46.1 billion in tourist receipts, an increase
of 3.42 million and RM9.8 billion from the previous year respectively.
Visit
Malaysia Year 2014 - "Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia" and more than
28 million in tourist arrivals
In 2014, Malaysia celebrated its fourth Visit Malaysia Year with
the theme "Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia" to reflect the diversity
and the unity of the Malaysian society. The Proboscis Monkey was chosen as the
mascot for VMY 2014, while the promotional campaign began early in 2013 with a
series of special events and activities, leading to VMY 2014.

Malaysia Year 2020 – “Visit Truly Asia Malaysia”
The year 2020 holds a special place in the heart of Malaysians,
with VMY 2020 set to become a festive year-long event. This fifth Visit
Malaysia year since 1990 will be held with renewed vigour and passion as we
celebrate the successes and challenges we have experienced together as a
nation. With the chosen theme ‘Visit Truly Asia Malaysia’, a myriad of exciting
and lively events has been lined-up to bring to light all of Malaysia’s
bountiful offerings in terms of art, culture, cuisine, history, natural beauty
and others.

Pahang gearing up for tourism travel bubble; final say by NSC
KUANTAN: Tourism Pahang has identified potential tourist destinations to be reopened under the green bubble concept, pending approval from the National Security Council (NSC).
Tourism Pahang general manager Kamaruddin Ibrahim said Fraser's Hill in Raub and Pulau Tioman in Rompin will be among the first tourism spots to resume operations in Pahang.
"Both Fraser's Hill and Pulau Tioman have achieved herd immunity after more than 80 percent of the adult population there have completed their vaccination (both doses). Those in Taman Negara in Jerantut are expected to complete their vaccination by mid-August.
"Residents and staff in Genting Highlands will complete their vaccination this weekend while tourism industry operators and villagers in Janda Baik are expected to finalise theirs within the next two weeks. The vaccination process has been ramped up in Cameron Highlands," he said when contacted.
He said any decision on the implementation of the tourism bubble in Pahang will largely depend on the approval and standard operating procedures (SOP) allowed by the NSC.
On July 25, State Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin was quoted saying the Pahang government and the NSC were reviewing the appropriate SOPs to revive the state's tourism sector which had long been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, a Tourism Pahang officer, who declined to be named, said selected tourism products are ready to reopen and the required SOPs for the premises to resume business have been drafted.
"The only setback now is the increase in the number of daily Covid-19 cases and there has been no decision if there are plans to allow interstate or inter-district travel. If not interstate, at least allowing inter-district travel in Pahang would certainly pave the way for the implementation of the tourism bubble.
"The state government will prepare the tourism SOP and hand it to the NSC to look into. It depends on the decision taken by the NSC after studying our SOPs...they will have the final say.
"The SOPs provided under the green bubble are strict as only selected hotels will be open for holidaymakers. The local authorities will identify the hotels or resorts where all the staff have completed their vaccination before issuing a certificate," he said.
Citing several examples, he said other measures include no sharing equipment during snorkelling activities in Pulau Tioman, allowing only small groups to take boat rides or trekking at Taman Negara, and no camping activities.
"It will take some time before we can allow normal crowds at tourist destinations but the state has made early plans to resume tourism under the green bubble concept. We have everything in place but the permission largely depends on the Covid-19 cases," he said.
