Tourism Malaysia to skip WTM, focus on sales mission instead

Tourism Malaysia will not be participating at the upcoming World Travel Market (WTM) London in November due to budget constraints.

Instead, Tourism Malaysia will lead a focused B2B sales mission to Paris, Frankfurt, and London, commencing on September 30. This initiative will align with their efforts to promote the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.

In a written response to a question raised by member of the National Assembly, Hisamudin Yahaya, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) confirmed the decision.

MOTAC elaborated that the sales mission would feature business-matching sessions and networking opportunities with prominent travel agencies from France, Germany, and the UK. Additionally, the roadshow will highlight Malaysian cuisine and cultural performances to engage with the public.

Despite these efforts, KL Tan, president, Malaysian Tourism Federation, expressed concern over Malaysia’s absence at WTM.

He told TTG Asia: “MOTAC should seriously reconsider its decision as the absence of the Malaysia Pavilion could potentially result in loss of visibility in the global tourism market.

“The Malaysian Tourism Federation is willing to take up the challenge to lead the private sector participation with a government grant of 400,000 ringgit (US$91,765) to save the day.

Tan urged MOTAC to adopt a revised strategy to offset Malaysia’s absence from the WTM, highlighting the UK’s importance as a high-yield market for Malaysia, while at the same time, developing the Chinese and Indian tourism markets.

He also praised the state tourism boards of Sabah and Sarawak for stepping up to represent their respective state tourism players.

However, other industry players appeared more supportive of Tourism Malaysia’s alternative approach.

Shah Azam Khan, senior vice president, hospitality Division, AnCasa Hotels & Resorts, explained that the roadshow would provide a more targeted experience.

He noted that the B2B networking events would allow Malaysian industry players to spend more time fostering relationships with European agents genuinely interested in promoting Malaysia.

Anthony Wong, managing director of The Frangipani Langkawi Resort and Spa, opined that if Tourism Malaysia is skipping WTM, it becomes essential for the organisation to ensure a significant presence at ITB Berlin, an even larger trade show. He noted that many European buyers attending WTM would also be present at ITB, making it a crucial event for maintaining Malaysia’s presence in the European tourism market.

Super GT set to make long-awaited Sepang comeback next year

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is set to host the Autobacs Super GT championships for the first time in over a decade at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit next year.

Malaysia will host the third round of the famed GT series on June 27-28 while the rest of the rounds will be held in Japan.

Haro Sports and Entertainment, the Malaysian rights holder for the event, have signed an agreement with the GT Association (GTA) which will see Sepang hosting the race for the next three years (2025-2027).

With the exception of a few years when the race was cancelled due to the SARS epidemic, Malaysia had previously hosted a round of the series annually between 2000 to 2013.

The series was known as the All-Japan Grand Touring Championship in its earlier years.

Haro Sports and Entertainment managing partner Fahrizal Hasan said they are expecting to attract roughly 80,000 fans during the event.

"Malaysia has an advantage as it is the only country to host the race outside of Japan," said Fahrizal after the agreement signing ceremony with GTA in Putrajaya today.

"We are hoping to attract 80,000 fans over the two days. We are expecting about 30 to 35 per cent of those fans to be foreigners.

"We anticipate a tourism receipt of roughly US$45 million (RM194 million) from the event which will create a spillover effect for the local economy."

Fahrizal added that he is hoping to get a Malaysian to compete in the Sepang round as a wildcard driver.

"We are looking at pairing a Malaysian driver with an Indonesian driver as each car is shared by two drivers. This is to boost local interest in the race," said Fahrizal.

The race was originally scheduled to make a comeback to Sepang in 2020 but was forced to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan witnessed the signing ceremony between Fahrizal and GTA president Masaaki Bandoh, which was held at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture building in Putrajaya today.

Malaysia reports 19 pct rise in domestic tourism in Q1

BACHOK: Malaysia recorded 58.6 million domestic tourists in the first quarter of this year, a 19 per cent increase from 49.26 million during the same period last year.

Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (Promotion) Datuk Musa Yusof, said domestic tourist spending reached RM24.1 billion, marking a 25.3 per cent rise from RM19.21 billion in 2023.

"Domestic tourists are those who travel more than 25 kilometres and stay overnight. Those who do not stay overnight are considered regular visitors or business travellers," he told reporters at the Temasya Orang Kampung (TOK) 3.0 'Sanggar Warisan' 2024 programme at Camp D'Telong, here today.

He attributed the rise in domestic tourism to the numerous holidays and a rising trend among Malaysians seeking peaceful, relaxing getaways.

Musa highlighted that Selangor, Pahang and Melaka are among the most visited states, thanks to their numerous tourist attractions.

"Travellers today are increasingly seeking 'healing' experiences, focusing on relaxation and family enjoyment rather than luxury," he added.

He advised visitors to plan their trips in advance to avoid higher costs, particularly during peak seasons like school holidays or festivals.

Regarding the TOK programme, Musa said that rural tourism activities offer unique experiences, including traditional sports, cultural arts and local handicrafts, giving tourists distinctive and memorable experiences.

Notable events at the TOK programme include traditional sports such as tarik upih and galah panjang, coconut scraping, pottery making, weaving kercut mats, crafting tengkolok and singgora roofs and various sales exhibitions.
