Langkawi defies decline, tourist arrivals soar

Amid news of declining tourist arrivals in September and October, compared against the same period last year, the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) has come out to say that numbers for 2023 will still exceed last year’s record.

Langkawi, which is loved by local and international tourists for its picturesque islands, welcomed 2.57 million travellers in 2022. Between January and October this year, it had 2.2 million tourists, representing 69.9 per cent of the targetted 3.2 million tourists.

Azmil Munif Mohd Bukhari, manager of tourism division at LADA, told TTG Asia that a number of festivities and events in November were instrumental in boosting arrivals. These included the extended weekend of Deepavali last week, which coincided with the Langkawi Geopark International Enduro Mountain Biker challenge on November 12 and the Hari Mahsuri (Mahsuri Day) programme on November 18, which featuring a unique musical theatre and storytelling experience.

Furthermore, Langkawi International Half Marathon 2023 on December 2 is expected to draw more than 2,000 participants from 31 countries.

Azmil emphasised that December is projected to be a super peak season for Langkawi, mirroring trends observed in previous years.

However, he acknowledged the possibility that arrivals this year might slightly miss the targeted 3.2 million target.

He explained: “The arrival target for 2023 was set in late 2022. During that period, we anticipated a significant influx of Chinese outbound tourists, but regrettably, this expectation has not materialised. The presence of outbound travellers from China has been limited, not only in Langkawi but worldwide.

“Additionally, certain international carriers that were operating flights to Langkawi before the Covid-19 pandemic have reported a shortage of planes, preventing them from resuming flights to Langkawi post-lockdown.”

Azmil is confident that 2024 will mark the best post-lockdown year ever for Langkawi. To further enhance air connectivity, LADA has introduced a new incentive for scheduled airlines flying new routes to Langkawi effective January 1, 2024. It will provide a one-off US$10,000 to the airline.

Additionally, Langkawi is set to be the host destination for Routes Asia 2024, taking place from February 27 to 29. This event will serve as a platform for the region’s airlines, airports, tourism authorities, and aviation stakeholders to meet and share best practices.

He believes that hosting Routes Asia 2024 and providing senior-level airline executives with the opportunity to experience the island will lead to an increased number of international airlines initiating direct flights to Langkawi.

Air connectivity will see further improvement when flydubai initiates daily flights to Langkawi next February, and AirAsia commences direct flights from Kualanamu, Medan in Indonesia from March 2, 2024.

Itaka, one of Poland’s biggest tour operators, will also launch charter flights to Langkawi from winter 2024 for three consecutive years, shared Azmil.

Visit Kedah 2025 initiative gains traction as tourism players rally for Langkawi's resurgence

ALOR STAR: Tourism players in the state have welcomed the Visit Kedah Year 2025 initiative announced by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor yesterday. They said the move was necessary as the state tourism sector, particularly Langkawi, needed a boost to fully recover from the devastating economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hence, the industry players said they want stronger cooperation between the state administration and the federal government to enhance Kedah, particularly Langkawi's international visibility.

"Langkawi's appeal is seasonal as we depend on domestic visitors. Perhaps the state and federal governments can look to provide more international exposure for the island. "Langkawi still offers delightful experiences with excellent cuisine and outstanding hotels and resorts that cater to local visitors and international travellers.

"We have engaged with authorities, both at the federal and the state levels, to exchange ideas. We are anticipating the Visit Kedah 2025. We wish businesses to return to the pre-pandemic era or even better," Kedah and Perlis Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) chairman Eugene Dass said when contacted today.

Eugene said it is vital to develop a solid plan to revive Langkawi's image following recent negative publicity on the island's tourism sector.

Thus, the hoteliers are calling for the federal government to consider measures such as domestic travel tax incentives to boost domestic travellers' arrival to Langkawi.

"We also advocate a review of Langkawi's duty-free status, extending it further on the island. This has proven to be a major draw for local tourists.

"A comprehensive assessment of Langkawi products and attractions is needed. We need to benchmark them against other destinations that directly compete with Langkawi," he added.

Langkawi Homestay Association chairman Mokhtar Shabudin Ismail echoed his sentiments. He said more aggressive efforts are required to promote Langkawi to international travellers in the post-pandemic era. "Contrary to claims by certain quarters, domestic travellers are still visiting Langkawi, but the island has always relied heavily on international travellers to support the tourism industry. "Things have not fully recovered with international travellers are hard to come by these days," he added.

Meanwhile, Konsortium Ferry Line Ventures Sdn Bhd's human resources and operations manager, Captain Dr Baharin Baharom, stressed the need for regular maintenance dredging at Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis jetty terminals to improve ferry trip frequencies. "The limited number of ferry trips is a key issue driving visitors away. With increased trips and extended travel times, more visitors will find it easier to visit the island," he added.

Yesterday, Sanusi announced that the state government has decided to launch Visit Kedah Year 2025. As such, he said the state sought cooperation from the Tourism, Arts and Cultural Ministry to promote Visit Kedah Year 2025.

Sanusi reportedly said he hoped that the ministry would extend its fullest cooperation, particularly on the promotional campaign, which is set to begin by next year.

MATTA Collaborates With Tourism Malaysia At The World Travel Market 6 - 8 November 2023, London

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 NOVEMBER 2023 – In collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, MATTA is working with British Artist Rachel Gray, a recognised British artist of wildlife portraiture to launch the ‘Sustainable Malaysia Initiative’ at the Tourism Malaysia Pavilion at the World Travel Market 2023.

Rachel Gray will produce one large format of the Malaysian tiger, a recognised endangered species. This portrait, through the use of technology, will be converted to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT’s), which have an intrinsic value and they will be auctioned for sale at a date to be finalized later in the year.

The proceeds from the auction and sale of the Non-Fungible Tokens will go towards supporting sustainable tourism at the Royal Belum State Park in Perak as well as towards sustaining the indigenous communities that live within.

With the eyes of the world upon Malaysia for the few days between 6 - 8 November 2023 at the WTM 2023, it is believed that this event provides unique opportunities for branding and merchandizing and will help Malaysia get the word out about eco-tourism and the sustainable activities that go with it.

“Known and loved for our rich biodiversity, especially from the European market, this initiative is hoped to bring further awareness of Malaysia’s ecotourism products and sustainable tourism, apart from supporting the local communities and their conservation efforts.

This is also in line with our focus to promote Malaysia as the Top-of-the-Mind Ecotourism Destination of the World,” said YBhg. Dato’ Roslan Tan Sri Abdul Rahman, Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia.

Nigel Wong also took the opportunity to thank Malaysia Aviation Group for their support in providing a return ticket to London for Rachel Gray for this important campaign at the WTM London.

“The collaboration with Rachel Gray is particularly important as we feel that Rachel’s work tells the perfect story of the beauty of Malaysia’s rich wildlife heritage that we are trying to save and sustain for the benefit of the generations to come but also for us all here and now.” said Nigel Wong, the President of MATTA.

“This is also the first collaboration between MATTA and the British artist and we are proud of our close ties and the journey we are taking together towards a more sustainable future.”
