Tourism forum ideal to promote state

THE ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), which will be held in Johor Baru in January next year, is a great platform for the state government to promote Visit Johor Year 2026 (VJY2026).

Established in 1981, ATF is a cooperative regional effort to promote ASEAN as one tourism destination.

Malaysian Association of Travel and Tour Agents (MATTA) Johor chairman Kathryn Lee said the association would work together with the relevant parties to attract more tourists to Johor.

“We have less than two years to start planning and to ensure the success of VJY2026,” she said.

Lee said she hoped Johor MATTA could meet with Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who is now in charge of the tourism portfolio, and Tourism Johor to discuss VJY2026 matters.

“We have submitted our proposal to the state government on ways to further develop, strengthen and position the state’s tourism sector.”

Lee said the suggestions include having more international direct flights to Senai International Airport, especially from countries in the region.

“China is a big market. We can attract more tourists from the country if we have direct flights from other Chinese cities besides Guangzhou, to Johor Baru.”

Lee said Chinese tourists from cities other than Guangzhou who were planning to visit Johor, have to fly to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport or Singapore’s Changi Airport.

“Tourism involves inbound and outbound tourists. Johor needs to attract more inbound visitors especially from countries in the region.”

Lee said the Johor Baru-Haikou direct charter flights that started on April 24, were popular with Malaysians flying from the state to Haikou in Hainan, China. She said the focus should be on agro-tourism and shopping.

“Chinese tourists love durians and ours are the best in the world.

“Johor, as the country’s main producer of the fruits, is in a good position to attract them.”

Next year’s ATF is set for Jan 19 to 25.

Perhentian’s first seaplane by Oriental Sky

KUALA BESUT: Pulau Perhentian has hit another milestone by having the first seaplane to bring tourists to the scenic island located off Kuala Besut.

The seaplane facility was offered by the newly-launched Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa developed by Ikhasas Group.

The launch of the new seaplane took place at the resort and it was graced by Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

Ikhasas Group managing director Tan Chee Kian said it was the first private seaplane ferrying tourists to Pulau Perhentian. Tan said there were suggestions to clear more land in Pulau Perhentian to build a physical runway for planes to land but he rejected the idea.

“Let the seaplane bring tourists to the island, so that the trees and marine life here are well-preserved,” Tan said when met at the resort on Thursday. “Tourists from Singapore or Thailand who want to either take off from Subang or Penang airport can use the seaplane to come here,” he added.

The new private seaplane, which is a Cessna Caravan 208Ex Amphibian, is the first of its kind in Malaysia. It was purchased by Oriental Sky Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ikhasas Group.

Tan also said the seaplane initiative was endorsed by the government and in future, a mini Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex may be built here.

“Tourists from Singapore, Thailand and other countries can have their passports stamped here. “This is a good move to help shorten the time for us to be an international model,” said Tan, adding that the plane can be booked online.

Meanwhile, 40-year-old Mohd Huzaimi Ismail said he became the pilot of the seaplane after receiving training in the United States. According to Mohd Huzaimi, the seaplane can fly up to six hours.

Among those present during the launch were Ikhasas executive director Tan Sri Nelson Tan Jyh Yaong, Fajar Baru group executive chairman Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chee Kian’s wife Chan Shiu Shyan and prominent businessman Tan Sri Syed Mohd Yusof Syed Nasir.

LANGKAWI: Nine Agro-technology parks operated by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) have attracted over 600,000 visitors, generating an income of approximately RM22 million per year.

Mardi director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani said the Langkawi and Cameron Highland Agro-technology Parks each draw around 45,000 visitors monthly, the highest among the parks.

"Current trends indicate that both parks are gradually recovering post Covid-19, each generating about RM2 million annually, offering some relief to Mardi.

"The Tanjung Karang Agro-technology Park in Selangor, on the other hand, earns RM20,000 per month," he told a press conference after opening the Green-Tourism replanting programme at the Langkawi Agro-technology Park today.

Besides Langkawi, Cameron Highlands, and Tanjung Karang, six other locations also host similar parks, namely Kuala Kangsar and Bagan Datuk in Perak, Cherating (Pahang), Kuala Linggi (Melaka), Jeram Pasu (Kelantan), and Kluang (Johor).

Commenting on the programme, Zabawi said 450 saplings, including 200 durian trees, were planted at the Langkawi Agro-technology Park to replace aging trees.

"Our goal is for each Mardi station nationwide to plant at least 800 trees in support of the Malaysian Greening Programme's 100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign 2021-2025 initiated by the government," Zabawi said.

IPOH: The Perak state government through the Perak State Agricultural Development Corporation (Perak SADC) has launched a portal catering to the agritourism industry in Malaysia.

State Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said the launch of the the first of its kind portal, ecodoor.my is a proactive step that has so far brought together more than 200 agritourism operators in promoting unique agritourism destinations in Perak.

He said the development of the ecodoor.my portal will enable visitors to purchase attractive agritourism packages, with a target of RM50,000 worth of sales of tourism packages until year end.

According to him, the state government hopes that the launch of the portal can increase the awareness of domestic and foreign tourists of the potential of agrotourism in Perak and help to achieve significant growth in the industry.

"The agrotourism portal is an important step in promoting the beauty and uniqueness of the state of Perak to the world, while maintaining and supporting the sustainable development of the local agricultural industry.

"With this, Perak is expanding its appeal as an attractive and meaningful agrotourism destination for all types of tourists," he said in a press conference in conjunction with the launch of the portal at the Perak Tourism Office, yesterday. Also present was Perak SADC chief executive officer Datuk Yahanis Yahya.

Loh said the name of the portal was selected from a winning entry in a contest organised by Perak SADC over a period of three days starting May 22. The winner, Nurul Husna, won an agrotourism package.

Meanwhile, Yahanis said the portal, which provides a platform for agritourism operators to promote their products online, will allow them to reach more visitors and a wider market, especially foreign tourists.

Yahanis said that the portal can directly drive the economic growth of the agritourism sector as well as provide economic spillover benefits to the local community, especially after the encouraging response during the Perak Agrotourism Carnival 2024 organised by Perak SADC at Tasik Raban Resort, Lenggong recently .

"We welcome participation and support from all parties, including agritourism operators in an effort to create a successful agrotourism destination in Perak in line with the Visit Perak Year 2024.

"Perak SADC is committed to helping Tourism Perak in the development of agrotourism in line with the state government's desire to highlight the agrotourism industry as one of the main tourism products.

"This also empowers the Perak Sejahtera 2030 development plan proposed by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad through the flagship Food Security inititive under the Agrotourism Hub programme," he said.

In conjunction with the launch of the portal and the school holidays from May 25 to June 2,  a 50 per cent discount will be given to the first 50 people who purchase white water rafting, geopark adventure, and horseback ride activities in Selama, Gopeng and Ulu Piah here.

PATA inks MoUs with Sarawak Tourism Board, EATOF

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has signed new partnerships with Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) – to build closer cooperation and jointly promote sustainable tourism and resilience efforts in Sarawak – as well as with East Asia Inter-Regional Tourism Federation (EATOF) to establish an alliance for the activation of tourism in Asia-Pacific.

Both Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed during the PATA Annual Summit 2024 (PAS 2024) on May 16 in Macao, China.

To ensure the success of sustainable tourism initiatives in Sarawak, PATA and STB will work together to enhance tourism resilience and sustainable tourism practices, introduce carbon offset projects in Sarawak, engage in joint advocacy and policy development activities, jointly organise events, and collaborate on green hospitality, urban sustainability and biodiversity conservation initiatives.

The first activity outlined in the MoU between STB and PATA is the Tourism Destination Resilience (TDR) capacity building programme, which took place in Kuching on May 20 and 21. Tourism officials received training on core modules of the TDR Programme, which covered topics such as risk assessment and management, crisis communication, adaptive capacity improvement, and diversification strategies, among others.

Following this, on May 23 and 24, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the tourism sector will join a workshop on financial and digital skills, aiming to empower them with greater financial literacy and leverage digitalisation to enhance competitiveness.

Following the TDR Programme, PATA and STB will engage in further activities including a new series of workshops focused on ecotourism and community-based tourism development, waste management and reduction, and the implementation of sustainability certifications and carbon neutrality activities.

EATOF, an international tourism association that strives to develop a tourism community across the East Asia region and provide a solid forum to come together in unity, will join forces with PATA to boost local tourism through various businesses, including mutual collaboration in tourism, youth engagement, big data analysis, and more.

The MoU outlines the target of fostering mutual participation in significant events hosted by each association (namely the EATOF General Assembly and the PATA Annual Summit), sharing exemplary sustainable practices, and facilitating collaborative initiatives spanning from educational endeavours to regional tourism programmes.

Formed in 2000, EATOF currently has 10 member provinces in 10 countries participating, with the EATOF Secretariat located in Gangwon State, South Korea.
