PUTRAJAYA,
31 DECEMBER 2020 – Tourism
Malaysia has collaborated with Malaysia Budget Hotel Association (MyBHA) in
coming up with a new super-saving campaign called “Jom Nginap”, inviting
Malaysians to save while spending on hotel-booking. This is in line with the
Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture’s (MOTAC) call to revive the national
economy through domestic tourism.
Starting today until 31 March 2021, the “Jom
Nginap” campaign is one of the initiatives announced by the
Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri under the
Stimulus Recovery Plan (PRE) that is aimed at boosting domestic tourism while
keeping in check the adherence to the standard operating procedures (SOP) by
the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Security Council (NSC).
In collaboration with Gkash, the “Jom
Nginap” campaign is accessible through the widely preferred
online payment platform, Touch ‘n Go eWallet. Users only need to spend a
minimum of RM50 on a hotel stay and receive RM20 cashback within three (3)
working days. Users also get to enjoy a variety of accommodation packages
specially brought by the members of Malaysia Budget Hotel Association.

JANUARY 27
— Tourism has been the sector of Malaysia’s economy worst hit by the Covid-19
pandemic. After all, the movement control order (MCO) and the lockdown orders
to curtail the spread of the virus work against the very essence of the sector,
effectively impeding the businesses of hospitality, entertainment, tours,
travel, meetings, exposition, concerts, sporting events and social gatherings.
Many discussions have been held at various levels to
address the economic impact of the lockdown and prolonged travel restrictions.
The most common phrase derived from the experience of the industry in 2020 is
the call for a “new normal” and appropriate preventive action to ensure public
health and safety. But let's leave the battle with this virus to the medical practitioners
and healthcare providers, and examine what the factors are that should be
addressed to arrive at this “new normal” and rebuild the industry.
The overall performance of the tourism sector of Malaysia has been badly
affected by a series of unfortunate incidents even before this pandemic,
involving our airlines and the airports. Our share of negative publicity
includes the cost and convenience of visa applications and facilities for two
major growing markets, South Asia and China. General travellers safety, too,
has been an ongoing issue.
To further compound the situation, neighbouring countries
in Asean and the new tourism destinations in the region and around the world
were moving on high gear in promoting their destinations, coupled with vibrant and
strong national economies and political stability. Countries like Thailand,
Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan saw huge growth in their tourism
industries during this period. Malaysia, on the other hand, has been seeing a
decline in tourism arrivals since 2014.
With the developments that we witnessed, it is quite obvious that the “new
normal” will be to look back to the situation in Malaysia some 20 years ago and
to do everything that was done then to enjoy the benefits of robust and
expanding international tourist arrivals and industry development. Common sense
suggests that we have to reverse the undue tendency of the past few years to
conserve our resources by cutting back on promotions and shrinking our
organisational network and operations. There are no two ways about the need for
greater investment for advertising and promotions and expansion of our
operations.
Needless to say, we cannot expect more tourists to our shores by doing less. We
cannot grow our market size and share by shrinking our communications and
transport networks. We cannot correct the negative perception and rebuild our
image without working with the media and the travel intermediaries for which
capital injections are essential. More than anything else is the need to capitalise
on the expertise of industry practitioners with the right knowledge and
experience to address major policy issues. In this regard, the various
organisations responsible for the industry must be re-examined.
To begin with, the representation on Tourism Malaysia
Board and its operational autonomy must be restored. The participation of the
heads of the Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH), Malaysian Association of
Tours and Travel Agents (MATTA) and Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) as our national
carrier, alongside other industry representatives on its board line up is
crucial. The skill and experience of tourism industry professionals should be
duly capitalised upon.
Tourism, as a composite industry, thrives on networking,
teamwork and strong personal relationships. Without faith and confidence, it
will cease to exist. This is where the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board or
Tourism Malaysia’s strength lies. Staff with vast experience should be given
due support and recognition. Their links with the travel industry should be
encouraged and appreciated. The tendency to doubt this relationship in the
past, leading to a series of baseless allegations of impropriety and the undue
publicity that ensued, has left a mixed perception on the overall integrity of
the organisation. This must be corrected.
This matter needs understanding and should always be fact
checked. Undue suspicion and continued mistrust by the authorities will only
complicate issues and hamper any attempt to get the best performance out of
this set of well-exposed and professional staff.
In the last few years, a number of other
government-linked companies and agencies were formed, both at the state and
federal level, that duplicate the role and functions of Tourism Malaysia. The
budgets allocated to these organisations depleted the financial resources
available for a focused and extensive international advertising and promotions
campaign over a period of several years. As such, the functions and continued
existence of these organisation should be reviewed. The savings from their
operations should be consolidated to enable a more extensive and effective
global promotions campaign.
Given the current scenario and the deep anxiety on the
need to revive the industry, the “new normal” for tourism needs a revisit of
Malaysia’s tourism industry that dates back to the effects of the currency
crisis of 1998. And then charting a path for correcting identified weaknesses,
shortcomings or potential opportunities by way of an intensive campaign, both
strategic and integrated, as was done then. The campaign during this period of
between 1999 and 2007 has been acknowledged worldwide as one of the most
effective and outstanding in the quantifiable results achieved. The growth of
tourist arrivals to Malaysia then was unprecedented and remains exemplary to
many National Tourism Organisations.
There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Let the industry
experts who survived in this period, remain active and ready to serve, do their
part for the remaining years of their service and enterprise.

“Many
more digitally-led initiatives are under way for this year as we continue to
develop our talent pipeline and drive our employees to embrace lean and agile
methodology to support the long-term business sustainability of the Group,” added
Dato’ Mohd Khalis, who was also recognised as the HR Leader of the Year at the

Langkawi’s Mega Water Sports & Holidays looks to
combine its jet ski tours with other product offerings
Sharmini Violet, director of
sales and marketing at Mega Water Sports & Holidays in Langkawi, said the
company is in the midst of developing combo tour packages marrying its
signature jet ski tours with other product offerings available in the
archipelago, such as mangrove kayaking, go karting and sunset cruises.
“We
are helping to support other travel businesses in Langkawi through marketing
and sales. These combo packages will be sold at lower rates, as compared to
individual products, to domestic consumers,” she said.
The
company is also relooking existing products to see how they can be better
tailored to the needs of the local market, such as offering shorter, two-hour
tours, considering most domestic tourists would prefer to pack several
activities into a multi-day excursion.
Mint
Leong, managing director, Sunflower Holidays, said all her staff are working
from home to develop packages to lesser-known destinations in Melaka and
Selangor as well as experiential tours to Terengganu and Kelantan.
Having
conducted recces in Malaka before the movement control order came into effect
last week, Leong said they are now “compiling our comments and ideas on how to
improve existing products”.
The
company is also padding its product portfolio. “We have developed new products
to off-the-beaten areas in Selangor, such as Sungai Sirip Biru, Sungai Pelek
and Hulu Selangor district,” Leong said.
“When
business was good, we didn’t have time to do product development, an area we
are now focused on, and we will start promoting these packages once interstate
travel is allowed,” she added.
“We
are also looking at developing experiential tours to the east coast of
Peninsular Malaysia, to promote local cultures, food and experiences.”
Meanwhile,
some tour agents are spending their downtime – and hard-earned dough – on a
good cause. Laili Basir, founder of Pahang-based Laili Basir Event Adventure,
has appealed to his business network for cash donations to purchase basic
necessities for the flood victims in Pahang and the under-privileged in Sabah.
Laili
also pays the guides, drivers and others in his network to assist with the
distribution of these items to the communities. He said: “It is not as much as
what they used to earn in the past (before Covid hit), but it is something to
help them through this difficult period.”

KLIA, 19 January 2021: Malaysia
Airlines has received seven stars - full marks - from Airline Ratings in an
independent review of its COVID-19 health and safety measures.
The rating is based on seven criteria: COVID-19 guidance on the
airline’s website, social distancing during boarding, flight attendants’
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the compulsory wearing of face masks
onboard, modifications to the meal service, passenger hygiene kits, and the
deep cleaning of the aircraft. Malaysia Airlines was deemed to have excelled in
all categories, resulting in it being awarded all seven stars.
Airline Ratings is a worldwide airline safety and product rating review
website. Its rating system ranges from one to seven stars, taking into account
a number of different factors related to audits from aviation’s governing
bodies, lead associations, and the airline’s own safety data.
Group
Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Airlines, Captain Izham Ismail said, “COVID-19
has presented a challenge unlike any the aviation industry has faced
previously, and Malaysia Airlines has needed to adapt our services and
protocols quickly to ensure that our passengers and staff are kept safe and
comfortable. In July 2020 we introduced the “Fly Confidently” campaign, to
educate passengers on the enhanced measures implemented across touchpoints at
airports as well as on board.
We are
very proud that the range of measures we have put in place from check-in
through to arrivals have been recognised by Airline Ratings and hope that this
seven-star rating provides further reassurance to our customers that every
flight with Malaysia Airlines will be safe and enjoyable for all onboard.”
To take advantage of the airline’s great prices and outstanding COVID-19
safety record, guests can book their tickets via Malaysia Airlines’ App, the
airline’s official website at www.malaysiaairlines.com and

The Perlindungan Ekonomi dan Rakyat Malaysia (Permai) assistance package has brought a measure of relief to tourism industry players who were badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. - NSTP//FARIZUL HAFIZ AWANG.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Perlindungan Ekonomi dan Rakyat Malaysia (Permai) assistance package has brought a measure of relief to tourism industry players who were badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that under the package, the government has agreed to provide a one-off financial assistance of RM500 to alleviate the burden faced by the group, including taxi and bus drivers.
Those who stand to benefit from this initiative include 14,000 tourist guides as well as 118,000 drivers of taxis, school buses, tour buses, rental cars and e-hailing vehicles.
Muhyiddin said an additional allocation of RM66 million has been provided for this initiative.
"In addition, the government currently provides an exemption from excise duty and sales tax for the purpose of transfer, disposal and private use of taxis, provided the vehicle is owned for seven years.
"I am happy to announce that this condition has been reduced to five years, effective from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2021," he said in a special address today.
Muhyiddin also announced the introduction of a new Bus and Taxi Hire Purchase Rehabilitation Scheme where those involved will get a 50 per cent guarantee on financing from hire purchase and leasing companies.
The prime minister said a guarantee of RM1 billion will be provided for this purpose.
"Syarikat Jaminan Pembiayaan Perniagaan will introduce a Bus and Taxi Hire Purchase Rehabilitation Scheme.
"Under this scheme, a 50 per cent guarantee on financing from hire purchase and leasing companies will be provided for selected buses such as sightseeing buses, and taxis.
"Through this, bus and taxi operators can restructure their financing and enjoy a 12-month moratorium and lower monthly repayments."

Malaysia
Airlines Berhad’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Captain Izham Ismail, “With
the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in the country, we urge passengers to adhere
to all the safety measures that we have put in place on ground and on board, to
support the Government’s efforts in curbing and breaking the chain of
infection. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been offering our
passengers with many flexible travel options and continue to do so, to give
passengers regardless of fare class, including the Lite Fare, the certainty and

on board.

ancillary revenue.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) has urged the government to rescue the industry following the return of the Movement Control Order (MCO) this year.
Its president Datuk Tan Kok Liang said tour and travel agents have been battling with collapsing revenue and liquidity problems since the start of the pandemic.
"However, the government's efforts have not made any significant impact on this segment of the industry.
"Tourism businesses are currently in extreme distress due to the very fragile and uncertain business environment which is expected to continue late into 2021," he said in a statement today.
With MCO re-enforced this year, he said the industry is expecting more hotels to close or wind-up while more travel agents especially those owning tourism vehicles are very likely to face the same fate as hoteliers.
He stressed that the tourism sector has been one of the key contributors to Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) with 14.1 per cent (RM166 billion) in 2015, 14.5 per cent (RM182 billion) in 2016, 14.6 per cent (RM201 billion) in 2017, 15.2 per cent (RM220 billion) in 2018 and 15.9 per cent (RM240 billion) in 2019.
With the exception of last year, Tan believes the tourism sector is vitally important to the country and urged the government to come up with an enhanced and targeted rescue plan.
Matta called on the government to provide loan moratorium extensions and enhanced wage subsidy programmes until June 30 this year.
They also proposed for reliefs on rental, insurance and statutory licensing fees to help those who are affected especially the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) who already had to burn a lot of cash just to survive the last MCO.
"Over 5,000 travel companies are now in the 'ICU' condition and the government needs to initiate rehabilitation programmes as the situation will get worse.
"Allowing travel agents to close business premises and operate from home and the cancellation of the mandatory Travel & Tours Enhancement Course (TTEC) programmes for travel companies are good gestures of support," he added.
In the meantime, he suggested the association members go for re-skilling, though they were not directly supported by the government at the moment.
"It is also imperative for the government to resolve the issues on deposits held by airlines and related service providers, make urgent corrections to the (outdated) Tourism Industry Act 1992 and provide flexibility of approval for conversion of tour buses into other categories. This will allow these buses to be utilied for other purposes - these are practical measures that the government needs to assist."
"It is no longer 'business as usual' under the Covid-19 pandemic and we urge the various government agencies to make immediate policy changes to ease the financial burden of the hardest hit industry in Malaysia," he said.
Selangor, Penang, Melaka, Johor, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan are now under the MCO following a spike in Covid-19 cases recently.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the MCO would be in effect for two weeks until Jan 26.
The Health Ministry projected that the daily cases will reduce to between 1,000 and 500 within four to five weeks.
