Tourism Malaysia committed to help promote Zoo Negara

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- Tourism Malaysia has given an assurance that it would cooperate with relevant parties to promote and improve the number of visitors to Zoo Negara.

Tourism Malaysia Director-General Datuk Musa Yusof said the department would strive to assist the development of Zoo Negara, besides suggesting reforms to meet the satisfaction of visitors who wanted something different.

"We will sit together with them (Zoo Negara and travel agencies) to discuss this matter because they (visitors) wanted something different but (currently) it’s a normal zoo.

"For example, the animals are most active at night, so we might suggest that they provide Night Safaris,” he told reporters after attending the official launch of ‘Discover Kuala Lumpur’ here, today.

Musa said the purpose of promoting Zoo Negara was important as it was one of the tourist attractions and ‘Cuti-Cuti Malaysia’ destination, especially to those domestic visitors who formed the biggest contributors.

In May, Bernama reported that there was a drop in the number of visitors to Zoo Negara from year to year as it was facing various issues and negative perceptions such as the less attractive condition of the zoo and that the animals were thin and inactive.

For the record, the number of visitors to Zoo Negara last year was 368,098 while the number for this year up to May was 116,352.

Meanwhile, 'Discover Kuala Lumpur' is a new travel package for Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2 passengers who were transiting at least eight-hours to experience and have a glimpse of the capital city in the quickest way and more flexible city tour at their own pace.

The package is a collaboration between Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) and KL Hop-On Hop-Off bus and it was launched by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi.

Musa said this was an initiative done by several private sectors in their efforts to promote inbound tourism and easy connection into this city, with the hope of enticing tourists to make Malaysia as their next holiday destination.

The package price is RM65 for a child between two and 12 years old, and RM140 for an adult. The tour package will be conducted in English, and it plies two routes - the Garden Route and the City Route.
