KLIA offers direct connection to Russia as Transaero debuts at KLIA

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 31, 2011): Malaysia Airports's relentless marketing effort and Tourism Malaysia's aggressive promotion continued to bore fruit to ensure the aviation industry ended 2011 on a positive note. And, to end the year on a positive note, Transaero Airlines, Russia's second largest airline, made its maiden landing at KL International Airport (KLIA) today.

Transaero, the sole airline from Russia to operate into Kuala Lumpur, operates one weekly flight every Saturday from Moscow and Kuala Lumpur and vice versa, using a Boeing 767 aircraft with 255 seat configuration, said Malaysia Airports in a statement. The inaugural flight UN551 touched down at KLIA today and was given a warm Malaysian style reception by Malaysia Airports and Tourism Malaysia. It said Transaero has been operating charter flights to KLIA for the last few years and has created sufficient market demand on this route for the airline to start scheduled operations.

Managing Director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad was quoted as saying:"Malaysia Airports is very pleased with Transaero's decision to include Kuala Lumpur in their network and establish a direct connection between Malaysia and Russia. "Transaero's service opens a new market for us and we wish them all the best for their operations in Kuala Lumpur. We look forward for the airline to stabilise and strengthen its operation into Kuala Lumpur and hopefully, increase their frequency to KLIA soon".

He said it was Malaysia Airports' close cooperation and relations with Tourism Malaysia plus the Ministry of Transport's pro-business policies that brought this airline from Russia to Malaysia.

Transaero, the 57th airline serving Kuala Lumpur, will provide convenient access between Kuala Lumpur and Moscow and expand two-way trade, investment and tourism for both countries. In 2011, apart from Transaero, KLIA also welcomed Air Koryo and Lion Air, while Egypt Air made a comeback to KLIA.

Transaero, which flies to China, Japan, Thailand and India, also plys to major Russian cities and is also the leading carrier to Kazakhstan. Its network covers many European destinations such as Austria, Cyprus, England, Germany, Greece, Israel and Spain.

Beach resort expects uptrend in its MICE market

Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa in Penang expects its meeting, incentives, convention, and exhibition (MICE) market to grow next year.

Its general manager Elaine Yue said Penang was experiencing growth in investments from overseas in the property and manufacturing sectors over the past two years. This would likely lead to more MICE events in the future, Yue said. “The vibes are good, an indication that more investments will pour into Penang. This should translate very well for the MICE segment.”

As the only five-star beachfront resort in Batu Ferringhi equipped with integrated resort facilities, the resort would be in a strong position to tap into the MICE market, she said in an interview. “For example, all of our public areas are now equipped with free Internet broadband access, a facility that supports the needs of our MICE guests. We also have four MICE specialists in our resort. They are part of our main operations unit, capable of servicing the needs of our MICE guests and convention planners,” she said.

It was reported that Penang registered until August, this year, RM4.8bil in investments and it is on track to achieve the targeted RM6.1bil investments for 2011. Last year, Penang achieved the highest investment in Malaysia with RM12bil recorded. “This is why we can expect the MICE market to boost our occupancy rate in 2012, as the MICE segment is a substantial contributor to our revenue,” she added.

Yue said the Rasa Sayang’s average occupancy rate was expected to be around 65% this year, a slight percentage increase from last year. “For the Christmas and Chinese New Year holiday period, the bookings show that our occupancy rate for the period will be over 90%,” she said.

Yue said there was a slight decrease in arrivals from Europe due to the weakening economy there. “Regional tourism from neighbouring countries and the Middle East has increased this year, comprising about two thirds of our tourist arrivals. The remainder comes from Europe, United States and others,” she said.

Yue said Rasa Sayang Resort was competing with the five-star resorts in Langkawi by offering room rates starting from RM600 onwards. Yue has 20 years of experience in Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts and had served in various senior executive positions in the Group.

She was based in Hong Kong, Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Chiang Mai before taking up her present general manager position. She is the 18th general manager and also the first female holding the position for the property in Penang. Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts currently owns and manages 72 hotels under the Shangri-La, Kerry and Traders brands with a room inventory of over 30,000.

Shangri-La hotels are five-star deluxe property featuring extensive luxury facilities and services. Its hotels are located in Australia, Canada, mainland China, Fiji, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, the Philippines, Singapore, Sultanate of Oman, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.

The group has a substantial development pipeline with upcoming projects in Canada, mainland China, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Britain.

Australian loves simple Malaysian lifestyle and the quirks

While some expatriates love the excitement offered by Kuala Lumpur’s city life, for David Beasley it was the simple things that made him choose Malaysia as a place to call home.

Beasly, who works as a project management specialist in Cyberjaya, loves pasar malam, eating at mamak shops and the lush greenery around him.

Taking a shot: Beasley enjoys playing pool at his house during his free time.

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Beasley moved some 10 years ago right after turning 29.

He lives in Puchong, where convenient facilities are nearby.

However, when he first moved to Malaysia, it was not easy to settle in.

But, Beasley was optimistic and confident about the people and decided not to give up.

“The first year, it was difficult to make friends because as friendly as the locals are, they are cautious about letting anyone get closer to them.

“I did not want to be part of the expat community, it defeats the purpose of living in a foreign land. I wanted be to be part of the local culture and learn to adapt to the Malaysian lifestyle. That’s why I chose to live in Puchong.

“The quality of life here is good and food is cheap,” he said.

Beasley admits that traffic can be ghastly at times but it is something he has gotten accustomed to. “In Melbourne we have trams, so it would be nice if Malaysia had a better public transportation system. “What I do miss about Melbourne, which I think Kuala Lumpur can have more of, is the art scene. The art and live music scene here is not bad, but it’s got a long way to go,” he added.

Asked what the one thing is he needs to learn more of , Beasley said it is the Malay language. “I can speak sikit-sikit to get by with ordering food at the mamak shop. But since everyone speaks in English here, I have not put in much effort to improve my Malay,” he said.

“I have learnt to differentiate the cultural practices of every race in the country, down to weddings, funerals and celebrations. “I met my fiance here, through Facebook, and that is surely one of the best things that has happened to me here,” he said.
