Sabah birding routes attract worldwide enthusiasts

KOTA KINABALU: More than 100 birding and wildlife travel experts and enthusiasts from across the globe attended the unveiling of the Sabah Birding Routes during the recent Global BirdFair in Rutland, United Kingdom.

The guide map, launched by Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, was the focal point of the Sabah birding destination promotion.

"We aim to put Sabah on the global birdwatching map, and we are excited about the strong interest in Sabah as a birding destination at the Global BirdFair.

"This event showcased Sabah's birding potential and connected us with the global community. "We are eager to welcome more birding enthusiasts to explore Sabah's natural beauty," said Joniston, who is chairman of the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), in a statement.

Present were STB chief executive officer Julinus Jimit, Sabah Birdwatchers Association president Ron Pudin, and representatives from key birding associations, including the World Pheasant Association.

The Sabah Birding Routes outlines the best birdwatching locations in Sabah, including Mount Kinabalu, which Joniston describes as "a VIP lounge for our avian celebrities" due to its role as a key distribution centre for Borneo's montane birds.

With 688 bird species, including 66 endemic to Borneo and six unique to Sabah, the guide aims to enhance the birdwatching experience and allow enthusiasts to explore Sabah's rich avian diversity with ease.

The guide map was prepared by the Sabah Tourism Board with input from the Sabah Birdwatchers Association.

Acknowledging the invaluable contributions of the Sabah Birdwatchers Association, Joniston said Ron Pudin has been instrumental in promoting Sabah's rich avian diversity.

"Ron's passion and dedication have been crucial in putting Sabah's birding treasures on the map.

"I am sure his work will continue to inspire both locals and visitors to appreciate and protect our natural heritage," he said.

Meanwhile, Ron said the opportunity to produce the birding route map has opened the door to working with the World Pheasant Association to share technical and expertise knowledge, particularly on one of the rarest pheasants in the world, the Bornean Peacock Pheasant.

"It's high time that we work together to establish long-term plans for sustainable habitats for this species. "This is a successful trip indeed to one of the biggest bird fairs in the world."

Direct Kota Kinabalu-Kota Bharu flights offer tourism potential

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s tourism players are expanding into the Kelantan market following the launch of direct flights between the two states.

Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association (MCTA) Sabah Chairman, Vincent Sia, said AirAsia currently operates flights three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and they are capitalising on this service.

He said MCTA Sabah, with support from the Sabah Tourism Board, launched a roadshow to promote Sabah in the northeastern and western regions of the peninsula on June 22-28.

“We initiated the roadshow through a business networking event with tourism players in Kota Bharu, which is our new market,” said Vincent.

The event was attended by Kelantan Tourism, Culture, Arts, and Heritage Chairman, Datuk Kamaruddin Md Nor, and Tourism Malaysia Eastern Region Office, Deputy Director Mohd Azizul Arif Yahaya.

“We have also discussed with Kamaruddin and Azizul to collaborate on efforts to jointly promote Kota Kinabalu and Kota Bharu,” added Vincent.

To attract more travellers to visit Sabah, he suggested that AirAsia consider increasing flight frequency from the present three to five times a week.

Following their networking and meeting in Kota Bharu, MCTA Sabah continued their roadshow to Ipoh.

“Perak is also a new market for us with promising potential, as visitors from the State can travel to Sabah via Penang, which has an international airport,” Vincent noted.

He was also impressed by the number of outbound travel agencies in Perak, which, despite being a small State, has more than 30, indicating a strong potential market.

Vincent said he had extended an invitation to Perak Tourism Chairman Datuk Mohd Kamil Shafie to visit Sabah in the near future to foster cooperation.

“Sabah is poised to attract visitors from Perak because during the business-to-business session, we found that many Perak travel agencies had never been to Sabah,” he remarked.

“Although Perak highlights the orangutan as one of their tourism attractions, it originated from Sabah.”

“Visitors can explore orangutans in their natural habitat in Sabah, while Perak boasts its own elephants, distinct from Sabah’s pygmy elephants,” he added.

Vincent and other MCTA Sabah members also attended the National MCTA annual general meeting and election held in Kuala Lumpur, where Patrick Law was appointed as the new President.

He congratulated MCTA Sabah Advisor, Lawrence Wong, on being elected as the national 1st Vice President.

“I hope the new office bearers will provide us with greater support and create more opportunities for business and benefits for the members,” said Vincent.

Also present were MCTA Sabah Deputy Chairman Amity Wong and their members including hotel operators and travel agencies.

Gamuda Luge to support Selangor's 7.0mil tourist target: Menteri Besar

image: Skyline Luge Kuala Lumpur

RAWANG: Gamuda Bhd's Gamuda Luge Gardens is reinforcing Selangor's position as a premier tourist destination, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said.

He said the addition of Gamuda Luge Gardens, featuring the first-ever Skyline Luge in Malaysia and a vibrant entertainment hub in the northern Klang Valley corridor, is expected to boost tourist arrivals in the state.

"Last year, Selangor welcomed 6.54 million tourists. With these new attractions, it supports the state to achieving our target of 7. 0 million tourist arrivals for Visit Selangor Year 2025.

This development not only enhances the state's unique tourism offerings but also aligns with our broader strategy to attract leading international brands and elevate the overall visitor experience in Selangor," Amiruddin said at the launch of Gamuda Luge Gardens here today.

Gamuda Luge Gardens is located in the popular Gamuda Gardens township, featuring a variety of attractions designed for family fun.

This includes the renowned Skyline Luge Kuala Lumpur and the family friendly FunPark and waterplay attraction, Big Bucket Splash.

Gamuda Bhd chairman Tan Sri Ambrin Buang said since its soft launch in December 2023, the entertainment hub has quickly become a landmark destination in the northern Klang Valley corridor, attracting over 420,000 visitors including overseas visitors.

"This underscores our dedication to good placemaking for our community by creating places where they can be out in nature, get to know one another and ultimately to form close-knitted communities that support one another," he said.

He added that as Gamuda Gardens continues to mature with a current population of over 8,000 residents, the company is looking forward to welcoming new additions and strategic partnerships like Skyline Luge to add value to the residents.

"Besides leisure and entertainment, we also look forward to having more food and beverage (F&B) operators for our commercial developments, clinics and pharmacies, schools and lifestyle amenities that will help enrich the life of our community," he said.

The launch signifies a new era of excitement at the township, with the unveiling of two new attractions, signifying the full operations of FunPark.

These include the ferris wheel Eye of Gardens, officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the tallest and largest ferris wheel in a theme park, and the thrilling Vroomerang ride.

With these additions, FunPark now offers a complete experience, complementing its existing attractions: Jellycup Twist, Fruity Frenzy, Jumpshot, Carousel, and the 10,000-square-foot Big Bucket Splash waterplay area.

As FunPark and Skyline Luge Kuala Lumpur ignite the excitement within Gamuda Luge Gardens, the next chapter unfolds with The Atrium.

This mixed-use development plot, located adjacent to Skyline Luge and FunPark, will be unveiled in phases, boasting a diverse tenant mix comprising F&B, retail, entertainment, and more, to cater to the thriving community at Gamuda Gardens and its surrounding vicinity.
