Alibaba holds Malaysia Week campaign in Hangzhou

HANGZHOU: China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba is showcasing its continued commitment to Malaysia – its first e-world trade platform (eWTP) outside China – with a “Malaysia Week” campaign.

Launched yesterday, the week-long campaign featured the “must-see, must-eat and must-experience” of Malaysian products and tourism services on alibaba.com, Tmall and Alitrip.

Tmall president Jet Jing said Alibaba has been working with the Malaysian Government and business community for the past year to develop and improve cross-border trade infrastructure in Malaysia.

“Through innovations in logistics, payment, customs clearance and big data, Malaysian small businesses can now enjoy the convenience of global e-commerce trading, which in the past was only available to big multinational corporations.

“By making globalisation more inclusive, small businesses and young people will benefit tremendously in the near future,” he said at the launch here.
Malaysia Week was organised by Alibaba Group in cooperation with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), International Trade and Industry Ministry, Matrade, SME Corp, Malaysia Investment Development Authority, Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Inbound Tourism Association.

The launch came amid growing concerns over Malaysia-China relations following the Government’s move to review several China-linked mega projects.

Alibaba group founder and executive chairman Jack Ma, who was in Kuala Lumpur last month to launch Alibaba’s office, had expressed his confidence in the bilateral ties after a meeting with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

MDEC chief operating officer Datuk Ng Wan Peng, in her speech at the start of the campaign, said Malaysia Week was a bridge linking Malaysia to the world.

“Leveraging on the long-term partnership with Alibaba, Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will benefit immensely as they will now be able to reach farther and wider through access to new markets.

“We are confident this partnership with Alibaba will go a long way as Alibaba’s eWTP and Malaysia’s Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ) have a common vision, which is to help SMEs grow and revolutionise Malaysia’s e-commerce,” she said.

As of March this year, there were 2,651 Malaysian merchants on alibaba.com, an increase of 34% since last November when the DFTZ went live.

More than 50 Malaysian brands are expected to be featured on Tmall as part of Malaysia Week.

Taman Negara Mulu menarik diterokai

Tourism Ministry ready to revise 'Visit Malaysia 2020' logo

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry is ready to revise the design of the Visit Malaysia 2020 logo if required, says its minister Mohammadin Ketapi.

“People say the logo was criticised, but to me, it’s not like that as everyone has his or her own perspective.

“In fact, we have a long time before 2020 to improve on or touch up the existing design if necessary,” he said during a press conference held in conjunction with the flagging-off ceremony of the 2018 Lady Bikers Tourism Ride here, today.

Also present were his deputy Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Rashidi Hasbullah and Johor State Women and Tourism Development Committee chairman Liow Cai Tun.

The Visit Malaysia 2020 logo launched in Chiang Mai, Thailand,  by former tourism and culture minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz in conjunction with Asean Tourism earlier this year, drew flak from netizens for its seemingly ‘poor design’.

Among the complaints were that the logo looked ‘unprofessional’ and ‘very ordinary’.

Mohamed Nazri however, stood by the design, saying it was created by in-house staff.

The Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign aims to attract more than 36 million tourists to the country, generating revenue of up to RM168 billion.

Mohammadin said he was willing to continue with the policies and plans laid out by his predecessor if they were indeed of benefit to the people and country.
In the meantime, the Silam MP said he was open to meeting and discussing with any party including bikers, to promote tourism and culture in the country.

“For me, it’s a good move towards improving the domestic tourism industry, and the discussions may also touch on the incentives that the ministry can provide to the group,” he said.

On the 2018 Lady Bikers Tourism Ride featuring 108 women superbikers travelling from Putrajaya to Johor, Mohammadin said it was a smart and well-received programme.

He said the three-day event organised by the Johor state government which also sees the bikers visiting 14 tourist locations could also promote local tourism in a fast, inexpensive and effective manner, as participants were sure to share photos of their escapade on social media.

Alibaba launches 'Malaysia Week' amid concerns over China-Malaysia relations

HANGZHOU: Tech giant Alibaba Group has officially launched its “Malaysia Week”, which it said is aimed at boosting opportunities for Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in China.

The Malaysia Week campaign, which kicked off Friday (July 6) here, will showcase an array of “must-see”, “must-eat” and “must-experience” Malaysian products and tourism across Alibaba's platforms till July 12.

It aims to attract Chinese consumers to buy Malaysian products through its online marketplaces.

The initiative also combines online and offline activities specifically designed to promote and increase opportunities for Malaysian businesses to reach Chinese consumers, and to meet the growing demand for high quality foreign products.

The initiative is part of Alibaba's continued commitment to Malaysia, its first electronic world trade platform (eWTP) hub outside of China, the company said.

This comes amid growing concerns over China-Malaysia relations following the Pakatan Harapan Government's move to review several China-linked mega projects.

On Thursday (July 5), the Finance Ministry issued a suspension notice through MoF Inc for all contracts related to the China-linked Multi-Product Pipeline (MPP), the Trans-Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP), and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) projects.

Its minister Lim Guan Eng said in a statement that the MPP and TSGP projects, with a total construction cost of RM9.4bil, were awarded to China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau on Nov 1, 2016.

Meanwhile, the ECRL project was awarded to China Communications Construction Co Ltd as the main contractor.

During his visit to Malaysia to officiate Alibaba's office in Kuala Lumpur last month, group founder and executive chairman Jack Ma had expressed his confidence in Malaysia.

In a statement Friday (July 6), Alibaba said more than 50 Malaysian brands are participating in the Malaysia Week campaign and will be featured on Tmall, China's largest third-party platform for brands and retailers, during the week-long promotion.

Chinese travellers can also access special promotions on Malaysia's travel and tourism products and services on Alitrip.

More than 30 Malaysian tourism merchants will host special offers on the Alitrip platform for travel products and services, including tour and hotel packages, local attractions and events, as well as shopping and dining vouchers.

As of March this year, there were 2,651 Malaysian merchants on Alibaba.com, 34% more than the 1,971 last November when the Digital Free Trade Zone went live.

Malaysia Week is organised by the Alibaba Group in cooperation with Malaysian agencies such as the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Matrade, SME Corp, Malaysia Investment Development Authority (Mida), Tourism Malaysia in both Malaysia and China, and the Malaysia Inbound Tourism Association.

New tourism minister from Sabah stokes industry’s hopes for revamp

With Mohamaddin Ketapi (pictured) named tourism minister, travel industry members are optimistic for more prudent spending, Sabah’s comeback, etc.

Mohamaddin Ketapi from Sabah has been named Malaysia’s new minister of tourism, arts and culture – replacing Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz – renewing optimism in travel trade members concerned with issues such as government spending and Sabah’s image.

Mohamaddin is a supreme council member of Parti Warisan Sabah and also a member of parliament for Silam, Sabah. From 1986 to 1990, he served as assistant to the chief minister of Sabah. He holds a law degree from Buckingham University in the UK.

Industry leaders in Malaysia tourism sector expect Mohamaddin’s background and experience in public service will serve him well in his new post and are hopeful that he will be able to take tourism to greater heights.

Raaj Navaratnaa, general manager, New Asia Holidays Tours & Travel, commented: “He is a first-time full minister in the federal government and comes without baggage.

“I hope he will be able to enhance and mop up the ministry to make it function more orderly and effectively. I hope he will engage more with the private sector and listen to their views in shaping policies in relations with international tourism marketing, which was lacking in the previous administration.”

Morahols Travel’s managing director Eric Sinnaya believes that Mohamaddin, as a new minister in a new government, will be able to see things in a new light. “I hope he will bring a total revamp and rethink new ways of focus marketing that will further enhance the tourism industry,” he said.

Sinnaya also expressed his hope for the new minister to introduce a public audit of tourism expenses and the return of investments on expenses made so the public can gauge if money has been well spent. “He should be frugal and not overspend,” he added.

Meanwhile, Anthony Wong, group managing director, Asian Overland Services Tourism & Hospitality Group, thinks that Sabah’s “thriving tourism industry would have rubbed off (on the new minister)” to understand the value that the sector brings to his home state.

KL Tan, president of Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents, shares similar sentiments. “The appointment augurs well for rural tourism in general and east coast of Sabah in particular, as Silam is located midway between Tawau and Sandakan. Our minister is from this area and could testify that residents and tourists feel just as safe and secure as any other city or town in the country, or for that matter, any other tourist spots around the globe.

He hence hopes for the new government to engage with foreign government organisations that have issued travel advisories against visiting the east coast of Sabah and have them lifted.

Tan says MATTA is eager to work closely with the new minister to “achieve tourism targets, modernise outdated laws, introduce incentives to spur the industry and step up enforcements against illegal and unlicensed operators”.

He further recommends for the ministry to step up on digital marketing, collaborate actively with industry bodies such as MATTA in overseas promotions, abolish the tourism taxand provide incentives to upgrade the quality of tourism vehicles that cater to high spending tourists.

Africa (+6%), the Middle East (+4%) and the Americas (+3%) also recorded sound results. Earlier this year, UNWTO’s forecast for 2018 was between 4-5%.

Growth in Asia-Pacific was driven by South-east Asia (+10%) and South Asia (+9%), while the increase in Europe was pulled ahead by the destinations of Southern and Mediterranean Europe, as well as Western Europe (both +8%).

In the Americas, strongest results came from South America (+8%). The Caribbean (-9%) is the only sub-region to experience a decrease in arrivals during this period, weighed down by some destinations still struggling with the aftermath of the hurricanes of August and September 2017.

UNWTO commented that even with limited information coming from the Middle East and Africa, the results were signs of rebound in the former region and consolidation of growth in the latter.

“International tourism continues to show significant growth worldwide, and this translates into job creation in many economies. This growth reminds us of the need to increase our capacity to develop and manage tourism in a sustainable way, building smart destinations and making the most of technology and innovation”, said UNWTO secretary-general, Zurab Pololikashvili.

Meanwhile, confidence in global tourism remains strong according to the latest UNWTO Panel of Tourism Experts survey. The panel’s outlook for the May-August period is one the most optimistic in a decade, led by particularly upbeat sentiment in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
