Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak launched the first Four Seasons Place in South-East Asia in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. The ceremony was witnessed by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, and Tan Sri Syed Yusof Tun Syed Nasir, who are shareholders of Venus Assets Sdn Bhd.
Four Seasons Place and Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur are the brand’s first integrated development in South-East Asia, managed by Four Seasons Hotel and Resorts. The 1.5 million sq ft development will consist of over 300,000 sq ft of luxury retail space, with more than 230 hotel rooms, as well as hotel service apartments and residences ranging from 1,300 to 12,000 square-feet in size per unit.
The development is expected to be completed in four years and will be a new landmark located in Kuala Lumpur City Centre.
The signing of the agreement between Venus Assets Sdn Bhd and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts Asia Pacific Pte Ltd marks the collaboration between both parties in the Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur project. Also present at the launch were Venus Assets Sdn Bhd director Datuk David Ban and its managing director, Richard Ng.
Syed Yusof said, “Four Seasons Place is an iconic development with a gross development value of RM2.8bil. It will contribute in no small way towards providing employment and jobs to the people as this is vital for the government in its effort to maintain full employment.
“It will also have a positive effect on other industries such as the suppliers, contractors, architects, engineers, lawyers and, of course bankers, and this bodes well for the economy and the nation.”
Private residence owners will enjoy the highest residential swimming pool located over 330m above ground or hosting dinner events at the highest level of the tower. Four Seasons facilities include private lifts, a swimming pool on the facility deck and club facilities made available on the lower and middle levels of the residential floors, which will boost the prestigious branded development.
Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur will provide world-class five-star hospitality services to guests and residents. The private residences and hotel are both designed according to Four Seasons standards, providing world-class accommodation to residents and guests.
“The Four Seasons Residences provides the ultimate in prestige and exclusivity but the real priority is your own personal satisfaction. We can even stock your groceries, cater your dinner parties, arrange a chef to cook in your home, order in from the hotel’s restaurants or get last-minute theatre tickets through the concierge. “You are not buying a piece of property but you are buying a lifestyle that is truly unique and special,” added Syed Yusof.
The glittering launch was held on the grounds of the future residences at Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur, and was attended by many dignitaries including the prime minister’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen and Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib.
The Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur is a joint venture between the Sultan of Selangor, Syed Yusof, Datuk Ong Beng Seng and Ban. The brand’s expansion to Kuala Lumpur will play an important role to mould the country’s tourism sector into a luxury travel destination.

Present to launch the event was Genting Malaysia Bhd executive vice-president Datuk Kevin Sim and the management team. Astro celebrity Jentzen was also present at the event.
Take a break: The Warm house at SnowWorld.Take a break: The Warm house at SnowWorld.
All invited guests were called upon to light up the eight-foot SnowWorld logo ice sculpture with crystal light, followed by a “Day & Night” LED light animation show which is one of the new attractions at SnowWorld.
The new SnowWorld offers four new attractions.
First up is the “Winter Downtown plus World Heritage Concept”.
Upon taking your first step into the entrance of the SnowWorld, you will notice the relief façade along the sideway of the snow chamber that depicts the concept of a winter downtown experience. The stretch of streetscape along the slope also creates a wonderful visually-stimulating experience as animated and rhythmic lights twinkle from the windows of the shops.
Each depicts an English tea shop, a French bakery, an Italian pizzeria as well as shops displaying Spanish red wine, Dutch clogs and Swiss chocolates.
Another attraction that will definitely catch your attention is the ‘LED Light Animation Scheme’.
Instead of using regular lights, a unique light scheme was installed to give the SnowWorld a cheery daytime feel as well as a gradual transformation to a magical nighttime romantic evening.
So, for those romantic ones, take a stroll down the streets of a snowy downtown and be amazed as you create sweet memories with your loved ones.
The next attraction that visitors should check out is ‘The Lookout Point’.
There are plenty of attraction spots and corners in the thematic interior which provide a beautiful backdrop for endless photo opportunities. Climb up a flight of stairs to the outlandish castle which is a contrast to the quaint and scenic downtown streetscape.
Finally, drop by the ‘Warm House’. It is another attraction nestled in the snow-covered “hills” that is perfect for a break. It is a pleasant place to take a rest before continuing with more discoveries at the snowy wonderland.
For the more adventurous, take a spin on the Play Slide or Cresta Run Slide that will definitely steal your breath away as you slide down from the top of the hill. Also be awed by the spectacular ice sculptures on display as you frolic in the snow and take this chance to throw snowballs at your friends.
SnowWorld is located at Level T2A, First World Plaza. Tickets are priced at RM30 for adult and RM25 for child and senior citizen that includes snow gear such as jackets, gloves and boots.

PATA's Crisis Rapid Recovery Taskforce goes into ready mode

After setting up a Rapid Recovery Task Force (PRRT) in 2011, PATA is now ready to deploy the initiative should a crisis take place in Asia-Pacific.

Speaking at the official launch of the PRRT at PATA’s head office in Bangkok yesterday, Bert van Walbeek, chairman of PATA Thailand Chapter, said: “Everything about the PRRT was on a trial basis until now. Today we are 100 per cent ready to go.”

The fledgling PRRT has already been “helping behind the scenes” in relaying important travel advisories, contending biased media reports and helping rebuild consumer confidence, van Walbeek pointed out, while recent crises such as the Japan earthquake and tsunami of March 2011 and the Thailand flood crisis in 2011 have also provided learning points for the task force to refine its communication strategy.

“We were in the beginning very much focused on websites but now we realised that social media sites like Twitter and Facebook are the fastest ways to communicate,” he remarked.

PATA CEO Martin J Craigs agreed: “Countering misleading information in media and social media is a key element of the PRRT brief. Perception is reality. The visitor economies in the PATA region have been made painfully aware of this on numerous occasions.” Apart from the “reactive” post-crisis strategies, PATA would also take “proactive” steps to raise crisis management readiness among its members, said van Walbeek.

PATA’s Bounce Back crisis management booklet, which is already available in Chinese and Japanese, will soon be translated into different South-east Asian languages such as Thai, Bahasa and Vietnamese. Meanwhile, training modules will be ready by mid-2013 and will be presented during PATA Travel Mart 2013 in Chengdu.

Led by van Walbeek, other members of the PRRT include David Beirman, senior lecturer, University of Technology, Sydney; Emma Cashmore, managing director, Axis Travel Marketing, London; Martin J Craigs, PATA CEO, Bangkok; Walt Judas, vice president marketing communications, Tourism Vancouver; Alexander Kesper, security and safety executive, Bali Hotels Association; Ken Scott, managing director, ScottAsia Communications, Bangkok; and Rick Vogel, president, Include, Tokyo.

Flight paucity restricts Indian outbound to Malaysia

Malaysia is losing out on the growing outbound traffic from India due to the lack of flights between the two countries.

Mirza Mohammad Taiyab, director general, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board, said: “The number one concern in India is flights. There was a cutback in (air access) when AirAsia pulled out from North India, affecting the tourist inflow. Indian tourists are hoping for an increase in flights.”

“Connectivity must be enhanced for better passenger movements between the two countries. Among Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, Malaysia has the least flight frequencies to India,” he added.

AirAsia X’s four-time weekly Kuala Lumpur-Mumbai flight was suspended in January last year, followed by the withdrawal of its daily service to New Delhi in March. AirAsia currently flies daily to Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata and Tiruchirapalli, their focus being on shorter flights.

In 2012, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) operated 40 flights a week to India, with 12 weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur to New Delhi and seven weekly flights each to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore from Kuala Lumpur. MAS’ direct flight to Kolkata was withdrawn after only a few months of operation.

Arvind Tandon, managing director of Mumbai-based Faraway Places, said: “Tourism Malaysia has sustained promotional efforts of several destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang, Malacca, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, and trade players are well-geared to receive Indian guests’ requests. However, we do not have enough flights to plan many groups to Malaysia during the high season even though the visa regime has eased considerably.”

Guldeep Singh Sahni, president, Outbound Tour Operators Association of India, agreed: “The severe dearth of flights, specially from North India, is discouraging Indian outbound travellers and steering them away to other destinations in South-east Asia like Vietnam, Thailand and to some extent, Myanmar.”

Tune Hotels challenges new frontiers

Tune Hotels is pushing into new territory with a new brand look, an upcoming F&B brand of its own and 70 hotels in the pipeline until 2015.

Speaking to TTG Asia, Tune Hotels CEO Mark Lankester said the rebranding was a version 2.0 of the budget brand.

Currently, three properties in the chain bear the new look, including a revamped logo and colour palette, a lobby with more congregation space and a booking website that has been simplified.
Lankester also revealed during a session at Travel Distribution World Asia that Tune Hotels was cooking up its own brand of F&B establishments to be housed exclusively within its hotels. All F&B within the hotels are currently outsourced.

“We are still in early stages. We’re having people tasting the food and getting feedback from guests, as it’s all new space for us,” he said. “We’re trying to make it, dare I say it, as generic as possible for the market and testing the food in markets to see what is relevant.”

He added that it had not been finalised as to whether the new brand would take shape as a grab-and-go corner or restaurant for families, which may be dependent on the needs of each market. The brand would likely be launched sometime in 2013.

Tune is also on a development spree, with 70 new upcoming properties versus its 27 operational hotels. Ahmedabad, India will receive its first Tune Hotels on March 28 this year, while Tune hotels will open in Melbourne and Sydney in November 2013 and end-2014 respectively. Tune will debut in Japan between end-2013 to early 2014.

Further openings within South-east Asia and the Middle East are also on the cards.

“But it’s really Africa that I’m excited about,” remarked Lankester. “It’s the fantastic growth. Sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP growth is outpacing everybody – except maybe China – at five to six per cent.”

With a focus on West Africa, including Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, he said Tune would be opening its doors there in 2014 to tap domestic demand.

Driven principally by domestic business travel from the oil and gas industries, Lankester said a burgeoning local middle class was part of the target audience. “In Lagos for instance, if you were to attend a relative’s wedding, the infrastructure is so poor that you may not be able to return.

You have to spend the night there, and a five-star hotel in Lagos costs US$500 a night,” he explained.

“Supply is poor, demand is soaring. We’re serving the underserved.”

He said he was looking at between 30-40 hotels to be set up in Africa within the next three to four years.

When asked why Tune was not focusing eastward in a time when China was booming, Lankester said: “We want to tread carefully. There are already six to seven major budget chains that are huge in China who will definitely defend their share of the market. It’s easy to make mistakes, but we are getting there in small steps.”

He said a hotel in China would come up in either 2013 or 2014.

“(China) is a country that we need to be in, even if it’s just in four to five major cities.”

Old Istana Negara opens to the public for the first time

Old is gold: Dr Mubarak Chan, the youngest son of the late Chan Wing.Old is gold: Dr Mubarak Chan, the youngest son of the late Chan Wing.
For many, walking into the old Istana Negara which opens its doors to the public for the first time today, will make for a thrilling experience. But for a few, it will be almost like greeting an old friend.
For Dr Mubarak Chan Chin Cheung, 79, his life — quite literally — started at the picturesque mansion situated at the top of a gently sloping hill. “I was born there in 1934, the youngest of 22 siblings. The mansion was a family home especially built by my father who wanted all the family living in the same place,” he said.
Old memories: The Chan family residence featured a large pond at the bottom of the garden that has since been filled in and become part of the large field in the old palace grounds.Old memories: The Chan family residence featured a large pond at the bottom of the garden that has since been filled in and become part of the large field in the old palace grounds.
The mansion was built by architects Swan and McLaren, whose company is the oldest architectural firm in Singapore to-date and also responsible for the construction of the Jalan Ampang Bok House and Raffles Hotel in Singapore.
It had a number of bedrooms, two libraries, two card rooms, two music rooms, an altar room, a barber room, two kitchens and a large dining hall that was able to fit 10 tables.
“We also had a very large pond at the bottom of the garden and just a little way beyond it, the school house. “There was also an orchard with plenty of fruit trees,” Chan said, adding that he could even see Batu Caves in the distance from his bedroom window.
The property sat amidst 5.26ha land that stretched down to the Klang River and Chan remembered the lively events that used to be held at the mansion.
“My father usually entertained guests in grand affairs during Chinese New Year when we had lion dances. Special furnishings were brought out and the house would be lit up beautifully,” he said, adding that they often had the Selangor Police contingent band playing as well.
Stand tall: A photo of the old Istana Negara in 1945, showing the mansion’s facade with balconies on the second floor and open cupolas on the rooftop.Stand tall: A photo of the old Istana Negara in 1945, showing the mansion’s facade with balconies on the second floor and open cupolas on the rooftop.
He also remembers a stuffed tiger, some two metres in length, that had a grand position at the bottom of one of the staircases in a glass box, the animal having been shot in one of the Johor rubber plantations owned by his father Chan Wing.
The elder Chan had come from China’s Guangdong province as a destitute during his mid-teens to seek better opportunities in 1889. He made his fortune when the Hong Fatt Mining Company he founded with a few others became the largest and deepest open-cast tin mine in the world. It is now the site of The Mines Resort City. This led to other successful ventures including the co-founding of Kuala Lumpur Kwong Yik Bank.
Man behind the mansion: The late Chan Wing arrived in Malaya a destitute in his mid-teens and became a success story in tin mining and banking.Man behind the mansion: The late Chan Wing arrived in Malaya a destitute in his mid-teens and became a success story in tin mining and banking.
Though technically the last time, Chan stepped foot into the palace grounds was in 1977 to receive the Johan Mangku Negara award, the last time he ever called that place home was in 1941, just before his family had to abandon it when the war came to Malaya.
His family made their escape through various means, eventually ending up in different parts of the globe — his father and one brother in Perth, Australia and the bulk of the family in India. During their absence, the mansion was looted and many things were lost.
Eventually it became the official residence of the Japanese Governor of Malaya from 1942 to 1945 and, after the war ended, the British Military Administration used it from 1946 to 1951 as the quarters for its officers above the rank of Brigadier.
“Then from 1952 to 1956, the mansion was rented out to the Selangor state government for 5,000 Straits Dollars and after that, in 1957, our home was sold to the federal government for 1.4mil to be converted into the official residence of the King,” Chan said.
One of the main changes to the property since the days of his family’s residence there was the location of the main gate. “The entrance now was done during the Japanese Occupation. When my father built the house, the entrance was where the back gate is now. It was considered better feng shui,” he said.
As a palace, the building has undergone several renovations, including one in 1980 to construct the Balairong Seri Utama that was used for the first time during the installation of the seventh king. Chan laments that people seem to have forgotten the builder of the old palace and not even a single street has been named after him.
“He was even on the board of directors of the Confucian Chinese School along with people like Chan Sow Lin and Loke Chow Kit,” he said, adding that education was a very important point for Chan Wing and 15 family members had gone to study in Cambridge University between 1920 and today, including himself.

31 January 2013 : Malaysia Airlines today rolled out its first aircraft decorated in the livery of the oneworld alliance – which the flag carrier of Malaysia joins at midnight tonight in one of the most significant steps in its 40-year history.
The aircraft in its new-look design was unveiled at a special ceremony at KL International Airport this morning - ahead of a formal joining ceremony and press conference this afternoon - by Malaysia Airlines’ Group Chief Executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya accompanied by visiting counterparts from oneworld and its other member airlines, including New York-based oneworld CEO Bruce Ashby and, from Sydney, Qantas Group Chief Executive Alan Joyce.  Qantas has supported Malaysia Airlines through its alliance joining programme as its oneworld sponsor.
oneworld requires all member airlines to decorate a number of their aircraft in its standard alliance livery as part of oneworld’s promotional activities.
The first Malaysia Airlines aircraft decorated with this design is one of its 10 latest Airbus A330-300s.  The special alliance livery features “oneworld” in 6 ft (2 metre) high blue letters along a white fuselage and the airline’s standard tailfin, serving as a massive flying billboard to highlight that Malaysia Airlines starts offering oneworld services and benefits from tomorrow.
It will make it first commercial flight in its new look tomorrow, operating as flight MH129 from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne, departing at 10.15 am.
Another two aircraft in its fleet will be decorated in this alliance livery in the coming months.
The rest of its 88-strong fleet will retain the standard Malaysia Airlines livery – but with a 30 cm diameter oneworld logo placed on the fuselage by the main passenger entry door.
Also this morning, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, Bruce Ashby and Alan Joyce, placed the first of those logos on the side of one of Malaysia Airlines’ 15 Boeing 737-800s.
The oneworld logos will be applied to the other aircraft in the airline’s fleet overnight after the end of operations today, as part of a massive overnight rebranding programme that will also see the alliance branding added virtually wherever the Malaysia Airlines’ name is displayed – in particular at airport check-in desks and signage, on its website, tickets, boarding passes and all items of stationery.
The full story of Malaysia Airlines’ integration into oneworld will be detailed at its formal joining ceremony at 5.30 pm today, when Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, Bruce Ashby, Alan Joyce and senior executives from other oneworld member airlines will be available to the media for interview.
About Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines serves more than 60 destinations in almost 30 countries across Asia, Australasia, Middle East, Europe, and North America, including oneworld hubs Hong Kong, London Heathrow, Los Angeles, Sydney and Tokyo Narita.
Its present fleet of 88 aircraft – including its flagship Airbus A380s – operates more than 250 departures a day.  It boarded 13 million passengers in 2011, generating revenues of MYR 13.6 billion (US$ 4.5 billion).
Malaysia Airlines describes its distinctive brand as an extension of the special culture of warmth and friendliness unique to Malaysians. This inimitable Malaysian sense of graciousness is branded as “Malaysian Hospitality” and symbolized by the acronym MH, which is also the airline’s flight code.
Both Malaysia Airlines and its Kuala Lumpur hub are among the industry’s most frequent winners of awards for quality service.  Malaysia Airlines itself has won the ‘World’s Best Cabin Staff’ award from the UK based Skytrax airline quality rating agency in seven of the past 11 years.
Last year, Malaysia Airlines marked the entry of its first A380 into its fleet by having its Five-Star Airline status renewed by Skytrax – as the airline embarked on a series of improvements to reposition it as a premium carrier.

GEORGE TOWN: It will be all bright and beautiful at the 122-year-old Kek Lok Si temple in Air Itam come Chinese New Year. Temple’s trustee Datuk Steven Ooi said the temple will be lit up from Feb 6 to March 9 between 7pm and midnight.
However, the majestic lights can be viewed from dusk until dawn on the first three days of Chinese New Year (Feb 10 to 12) and on the eighth day (Feb 17) to observe the annual Thnee Kong Seh (Jade Emperor’s birthday). The lighting up ceremony will be held on Feb 6 when lights at the temple pagoda and the lower station would be switched on.
Ooi said the lanterns and LED lamps would be lit up at 7pm after a chanting ceremony. “We expect more tourists to flock to the temple to experience the spectacular fusion of modern and traditional lightings,” he said. Work to decorate the temple and to put up the lanterns had been carried out since early December last year. It is expected to be completed by Feb 5.
For the first 15 days of Chinese New Year beginning Feb 10, the temple will be open to the public from 8.30am until midnight. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will attend the lighting up ceremony on Feb 6.
As in previous years, devotees can donate between RM50 and RM2,000 for the lanterns. The money will be used for the temple’s upkeep. Devotees and well-wishers can visit the temple to register for the lighting-up ceremony. For details, call 04-828 3317.
The Kek Lok Si temple is famed for it’s seven-tier pagoda. It also houses the 20-storey octagonal pavilion, which shelters the 30.2m bronze Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) statue.
