Tourism Malaysia Resumes To Attract The Indian Market At SATTE 2025

NEW DELHI, 19 February 2025 - Tourism Malaysia returns to the South Asia’s Travel & Tourism Exchange (SATTE), one of India’s largest tourism fair for its 21st participation in New Delhi. The three-day event occurring from 19th to 21st February is a continuous effort to keep Malaysia as a preferred tourist destination in the minds of Indian travellers.

Tourism Malaysia intends to focus on niche products such as shopping, golfing, luxury tourism, soft tourism, theme parks and honeymoon packages to inspire the global campaign of Visit Malaysia 2026 at this year’s SATTE. Consequently, Tourism Malaysia is also leveraging the niche product segments such as wedding with Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE).

Being recognized as the Best MICE Destination 2024 in the Indian market, Malaysia continues to maintain its reputation and a destination of choice for Indian corporations. With approximately more than 40,000 trade visitors, the event anticipates a significant increase in Indian tourists to Malaysia through the rigorous promotion and stronger cooperation between tour operators and members of the tourism fraternity.

The Malaysian delegation is headed by Mr. Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali, Director of Tourism Malaysia New Delhi Office, together with 58 organisations representing tour agents, hotel and resort operators, tourism product owners, airline operators, Sabah Tourism Board and Tourism Melaka.

Mr Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali, Director of Tourism Malaysia New Delhi Office stated: “Tourism Malaysia remains committed in attracting a growing number of Indian visitors, catering to their diverse preferences. The Indian market has been a significant source of visitors to Malaysia for over two decades. With the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) campaign, we are focused on significantly increasing arrivals from the Indian market.”

India has been a priority market for Malaysia, given the strong economic ties with cultural connections between the two countries. Hence, India is currently Malaysia’s sixth-largest source of visitors.

In 2024, Malaysia recorded a total of 38 million visitor arrivals, with 1.4 million coming from India. In terms of air connectivity, 240 flights with 45,672 seats are offered weekly between India and Malaysia, operated by Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, AirAsia, Air India, and IndiGo.

Furthermore, Tourism Malaysia will leverage on the announcement of the visa-free policy for Indian travellers to Malaysia until 31st December 2026 as this is an opportunity to promote increased travel from India to Malaysia.

Tourism Malaysia is currently conducting various promotional activities in the Indian market such as, the Malaysia Food and Cultural Festival from the 17th to 23rd February at Pullman Hotel New Delhi Aerocity alongside its participation in the recent Outbound Travel Mart (OTM) 2025 from 30th January to 1st February in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Tourism Malaysia has also concluded a roadshow campaign across three main cities in India, namely Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kochi from the 2nd to the 11th February.

Sarawak Welcomes Singapore's Travel Agents For “MEET-THE-EXPERTS” Programme

KUCHING, 17 February 2025 Tourism Malaysia, in collaboration with the Sarawak Tourism Board, Business Events Sarawak, and the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore, conducted a business-to-business (B2B) session and seminar today, connecting local tourism industry players with Singaporean travel agents under the “Meet- The-Experts” programme followed by a 4-day, 3-night familiarisation trip (Fam Trip) to Sibu, showcasing Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage, diverse ethnic communities and unique local cuisine.

Held at the Riverside Majestic Hotel Puteri Wing, 18 travel agents from Singapore had the opportunity to network with 25 local representatives, including travel agents, tourism product owners and hoteliers, for productive discussions, insights sharing and relationship building.

The newly appointed Director of Tourism Malaysia Sarawak, Ms Rubiah Tul Adwiyah Haji Md. Yusof officially opened the programme. In her address, she emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in promoting Sarawak as a premier travel destination.

“We anticipate this initiative will lead to the development of compelling travel packages and promotions that highlight Sarawak as a must-visit destination for Singaporeans, especially given the 26 weekly flights currently operating between Singapore and Sarawak. The programme also aims to foster the development of responsible tourism experiences that will entice regular Singaporean tourists to Sarawak for the upcoming Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).”

Beyond the B2B sessions, the FAM trip to Sibu allows participants to immerse themselves in the Borneo Rainforest, enjoy a scenic journey along Malaysia’s longest river - the Rajang River, and experience the vibrant Iban culture as well as the Melanau Heritage Trail, apart from culinary delights, and the warm hospitality of local communities.

First launched in 2022, the “Meet-The-Experts” programme is an initiative by Tourism Malaysia Singapore to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between Malaysian travel trade partners and their Singaporean counterparts. The programme supports new business partnerships, contract renewals, product updates, and the development of attractive travel packages tailored for the Singaporean market.

Since its inception in Johor Bahru, followed by successful sessions in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Sabah, and Kelantan, the “Meet-The-Experts” programme has sparked enthusiastic participation, resulting in the creation of 268 unique travel packages showcasing Malaysia’s hidden gems and enriching cultural experiences.

The ASEAN market has predominantly been the primary contributor to Malaysia’s tourism sector, with Singapore ranking as the top source of tourist-generating markets, contributing significantly to the 18.9 million visitors from January to December 2024.

Sabah Tourism Board to review visitor guidelines for Masjid Bandaraya

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Tourism Board will meet with stakeholders and government agencies this month to address visitor guidelines for Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, said state Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.

The engagement session, chaired by the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), will involve representatives from Masjid Bandaraya, tour operators, licensed tour guides, e-hailing service providers, and government agencies such as the Public Works Department (PWD), Kota Kinabalu City Hall (KKCH), police, and the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac), she said.

The meeting was called following a recent incident at Masjid Bandaraya, where a video went viral showing a Chinese-speaking tourist allegedly being harassed for venturing into a restricted area.

"During the upcoming session, we will brief stakeholders on the revised SOPs and gather feedback to refine visitor management strategies," Liew said in a press statement.

Liew said STB would work with e-hailing service providers to establish proper drop-off and pick-up protocols at the mosque. "For tour buses, discussions with PWD will focus on ensuring smooth traffic flow.

Additionally, she warned that the relevant authorities would take stern action against illegal transport providers, such as unauthorised white vans, to ensure compliance with tourism regulations.

She encouraged the mosque management to provide standard uniforms for front-line staff and to offer them customer service and communication skills training to improve visitor interactions.

"As part of infrastructure improvements, plans are also underway to construct a dedicated public toilet for tourists, she said.Liew noted that the engagement session follows a meeting held on Jan 28 between STB's industrial support committee and Masjid Bandaraya's tourism management team. That meeting addressed several key issues, including the arrival of free independent travellers via e-hailing services, visitors taking photos in unsafe locations, the need for enhanced safety measures such as additional warning signage, and the revision of standard operating procedures (SOPs) at the mosque.

"These measures are being implemented to ensure tourists have a pleasant experience while visiting the state's attractions," she said.

She expressed hope that all stakeholders would work together to uphold high standards, particularly in terms of safety, visitor experience, and cleanliness.

Indonesia, Malaysia push for improved cross-border access

Indonesia and Malaysia cooperating on expanding access between Indonesia’s Riau Islands and Malaysia’s Johor state as well as enhancing tourism promotion.

The Indonesian consulate general in Johor and the Johor government are developing an agreement to enhance the connection between Johor and Batam Island, which is part of the Riau Islands. The plan is to have roll-on-roll-out (RoRo) ferry services between Johor and Batam, which will serve travellers, vehicles and goods.

Sigit Widiyanto, Indonesia consul general for Johor Bahru, said: “Both parties see the potential for access between Johor and Indonesia through Batam and Riau Islands to boost tourism traffic. A (scheduled) RoRo operation is a way to go. Travellers from Johor can use their cars to travel in Batam and vice versa – (just as how) Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand travellers (are) visiting each other over land.”

Both parties are also eager to promote cross-border trips to boost tourism, with plans to offer special discounts and rates for accommodation and other facilities to attract interest.

Sigit shared that “technical discussions with the local authority” are underway, so are discussions with industry players on promotions. “We hope that this will materialise this year,” he said.

In line with this commitment, the Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) signed an MoU with Dewan Teraju Usahawan & Peniaga Bumiputra Negeri Johor Bumiputera Enterprenurs and Merchant Council of Johor (DTUPB) on the sidelines of ASEAN Tourism Forum 2025 with the intention of boosting traffic between Indonesia and Johor.

Ismail Karim, president of the council, said at the signing ceremony: “To effectively introduce Johor’s tourism stakeholders and packages to the Indonesian market, it is important for us to collaborate with ASITA, which has a network of 7,000 members spanning all 36 Indonesian provinces.

“I hope that this signing is the first step towards a strong Johor-Indonesia partnership, particularly in the vital tourism sector, which will benefit both regions.”

Nunung Rusmiati, president of the national board of ASITA, said both organisations have a “longstanding relationship”, and the agreement will “take collaboration to the next level”.

She added: “While Johor seeks to attract more Indonesian visitors, ASITA is also committed to promoting Indonesia to travellers from Johor and Malaysia. We look forward to mutual benefits from this enhanced partnership.”

Budijanto Ardiansjah, secretary general of the national board of ASITA told TTG Asia that cooperation with Johor’s travel industry has so far been primarily focused on Batam and Riau Islands. However, DTUPB wants to expand coverage across Malaysia, as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

Budijanto expects to see increasing demand among travellers from Johor to explore beyond Riau Islands, which will result in demand for more direct flights. Currently, only AirAsia operates two daily direct flights between Jakarta and Johor Bahru.

“Although connecting to and from Johor through Singapore is very convenient, more direct flights and RoRo ferry services will open up more options for travellers,” he said.

Budijanto also expects Johor’s travel players to come up with more creative and attractive packages to entice Indonesian travellers.
