Pelluchi, Meintjers the frontrunners @ Le Tour de Langkawi 2020

KOTA KINABALU, 4 Feb 2020 - EXPECT an intense but open battle right from the word go as the fast men and climbers gather at the start line of Stage 1 of the PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2020 which gets underway at Padang Merdeka in Kuching, this Friday.

The first three stages on flat terrain point to a tight contest amongst sprinters but come February 10, as the race enters its halfway mark with Stage 4 battle from Putrajaya to Genting, climbers will take charge as they battle their way up to the 1,650-metre summit finish in Genting.

Battle for sprints and stage wins are expected to be explosive with notable sprinters like Bardiani’s former LTdL stage winner and former Androni rider, Matteo Pelucchi all ready to stamp his mark in his second appearance in the race.

Without Pelucchi, Androni are pinning their hopes on the team’s proven sprinting talent, Luca Pachioni, a former Wilier Triestina who won last year’s Stage 9 from Tapah to Tanjung Malim.

As for the home fans, hopes are high on Terengganu-born established sprinter Mohd Hariff Salleh to deliver and be on the podium once again following his historic Stage 2 win in Melaka last year.

Following the departure of overall winner Ben Dyball to WorldTour team NTT Pro Cycling this season, Team Sapura Cycling are shifting their hopes on Marcus Culey who shocked the peloton with a win in last year’s opening stage.

France continental outfit and debutant, Nippo Delko One Provence, have Riccardo Minali to carry their challenge as the team’s main man. Minali will be looking to repeat his two-stage wins in 2018 in Kota Bharu and Pekan which he achieved in Astana’s colours.

This year’s sprinting action will be made even more interesting with the presence of notable sprinters like reigning world Under 23 champion Samuele Battitella of NTT Cycling Team.
Eritrean young rider Ghirmay, 19, could surprise the bunch and tipped to be among the front runners following his feat in the La Tropicale Amissa Bongo tour last month.

Meanwhile, the battle for the PETRONAS Yellow Jersey will see the likes of former champion Artem Ovchekin of TSG setting his sights to be the only third rider in the race’s history to win the overall crown twice. Italian Italian Paolo Lanfranchi of Mapei and Colombian Jose Serpa (Androni) were the other two-time winners of the race. Lanfranchi won the race in 1999 and 2001 while Colombian Serpa took the title in 2009 and 2012.

But the challenge from top European riders like Tour de France’s former mountain stage winner Pierre Rolland (formerly of Team Europcar) and Frenchman Cyril Gautier of B&B Hotels – Vital Concept could pose serious damage to the leading general classification contenders.

NTT Pro Cycling’s Louis Meintjes of South Africa, who finished in the top 10 bracket of the 2016 and 2017 Tour de France are also among the top contenders while Team Sapura Cycling’s (TSC) Serghei Tvetkov, 11th last year (with Oliver’s real Food) and Androni’s Kevin Rivera, 13th in 2019, are also expected to be in strong contention for the KOM as well as the general classification.

The battle in the Asian category is expected to be equally intense with riders from 10 teams all fired up for the white jersey as well as precious UCI points.

Kazakhstan’s continental outfit Vino-Astana Motors, who made impact following their third overall placing in the team general classification, are out to defend their overall Asian crown but will be without their best-placed (3rd overall) Vadim Pronskiy this time around.

Japan’s Nariyuki Masuda, who was 5th overall in the 2019 general classification, returns with Utsunomiya Blitzen and is expected to be among the riders challenging for the Asian crown.

The 25th edition of LTdL begins in Kuching on February 7, before a transfer across the South China Sea to Kuala Terengganu for the second stage, which will then take the peloton across to the West Coast of the Peninsula. The race ends in Langkawi on February 14.

In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the race, Malaysian International Criterium race will take place in Kota Kinabalu on February 6 while the post-race Malaysian International Classic race around Langkawi will end the festivities on February 15.

Apart from actions on the roads, various community activities including fun rides, mini exhibitions and a mini concert will be held at the start and finish venues throughout the 8-day race. The Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA) will also provide booths and food trucks selling agricultural products at selected venues which will be held for two days starting a day before the race.

The 10-day PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi 2020 is scheduled from 6 to 15 February 2020, covering a total distance of 1,114.9 km across eight states which include Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Perak, Penang, Kedah and two Federal Territories; Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.

KLIA pilots facial recognition technology

Select visitors to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will now be able to take advantage of its Single Token Journey concept which leverages facial recognition technology to provide passengers with a single identification verification at all airport touchpoints, from check-in to the boarding gate.

Launched by Malaysia Airports (MAHB), in collaboration with Malaysia Airlines and IT firm SITA, the concept is part of the Airports 4.0 initiative that aims to transform KLIA into a smart airport through the use of big data analytics. During the three-month pilot period, passengers on two daily Malaysia Airlines flights to Narita International Airport, Tokyo and Kansai International Airport, Osaka will get to enjoy this convenience.

Facial recognition scanners have been installed at check-in counters H5 to H8, while e-gates have been placed at the security screening touchpoints and boarding gates.

Passengers on these flights will only need to scan their faces to verify their “token” at all the touchpoints. They no longer need to present their passports or boarding passes when going through these checkpoints.

Malaysia Aviation Group CEO Izham Ismail said that the new concept will allow passengers to enjoy reduced check-in time as well as manage the queue at the airport’s check-in counters, especially during peak periods. The company hopes to fully adopt this system by 4Q2020, he added.

Tourism Malaysia Boosts Publicity For VM2020 In India

MUMBAI, 3 FEBRUARY 2020: With the target of welcoming 1 million tourist arrivals from India, Malaysia is gearing up its promotion for Visit Malaysia 2020 (VM2020) campaign at the Outbound Travel Mart (OTM) from 3 to 5 February 2020 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai.

As one of the leading travel shows held annually in India, OTM serves as a marketing platform that allows trade partners and tourists to showcase and obtain information on the latest products and offerings in the tourism sector.

This year’s OTM is estimated to bring in 1,000 exhibitors from 55 countries, where they will be engaging with approximately 800 buyers and 15,000 trade visitors.

Led by Mr Zulkifly Md Said, the Deputy Director General (Planning) of Tourism Malaysia, the delegation from Malaysia this year includes 14 organisations from the Malaysian travel industry who will be offering special packages for 2020. The organisations consist of Malaysia Airlines, Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), 8 travel agents, 3 hotels and Window Malaysia.

"India remains one of the top market sources for Malaysia and we hope that more Indian tourists would take the advantage to visit Malaysia as we have many exciting events lined up in conjunction with VM2020,” said Mr. Zulkifly who urged tourists to check Malaysia’s Calendar of Events for 2020 available on the official website at http://vm2020.malaysia.travel/.

In line with Malaysia’s commitment to sustainable tourism, the launch of VM2020 campaign at the Malaysian Pavillion at OTM this year will highlight themes of eco and nature. Riding on the waves of the niche segments that are on the rise in Malaysia, Tourism Malaysia will be pushing more of these products and hold seminars on tourism products and hospitality, filming destinations and weddings. In order to facilitate networking between buyers and sellers, Tourism Malaysia will coordinate B2B meetings as part of the programme.

With the allowance of visa-free entry for tourists from India for up to 15 days by the government, Malaysia hopes to see further growth in the number of arrivals from India, which is currently the sixth largest source of travellers with 600,311 arrivals in 2018, an increase of 8.6% compared to the previous year. Malaysia is increasing its promotional efforts in order to meet the targets set for VM2020 to bring in 30 million tourist arrivals and RM100 billion in tourist receipts.

AirAsia X’s launch of four-times-weekly services connecting Kuala Lumpur and Okinawa via Taipei is expected to boost demand for the destination, and outbound agents are planning to release more packages and promotions.

Vic-Aire Holiday managing director, Hazel Sian, shared: “We will develop more itineraries (around Okinawa) as we expect the destination to see higher demand with the new flights and cheaper airfares. Airfares play an important role in determining demand.”

Likewise, Jasmine Lee, operation executive at Golden Tourworld Travel, said that the company plans to step up promotions on Okinawa with the launch of the new flights. “In the past, demand to Okinawa has not been so good,” she said.

Guests travelling on AirAsia X’s new Kuala Lumpur-Okinawa route are not required to obtain a visa during their hour-long stopover in Taipei and may return to their seats after clearing a quick security check of their carry-on bags and inflight belongings.

AirAsia has also partnered Malaysia’s Berjaya Hotels & Resorts to promote travel to Okinawa, following the hotel group’s recent launch of Ansa Okinawa Resort, a 123-room property located in Uruma City.

SEPANG Municipal Council (MPSepang) is prepared to pull out all stops to make Visit Sepang 2020 a success.

In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020 and as a precursor to Visit Selangor 2021, Sepang hopes to see a boost in tourism this year through its efforts.

MPSepang president Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yati said Sepang, as gateway to the country through Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2, had the potential to attract local and foreign tourists.

“Our motto, ‘Sepang gerbang negara’, is apt given its location as gateway to Malaysia. Our aim is to make Sepang a destination of choice in Selangor.
“MPSepang is targeting five million tourists for year 2020, consisting of 80% local tourists and 20% foreign tourists, ” he said at the launch of Visit Sepang 2020.

Mohd Fauzi also spoke about various attractions in Sepang that may appeal to tourists, including the Bagan Lalang beach, five-star hotels as well as the availability of local dragonfruit.

There will be monthly activities and events throughout the year. Information on the activities as well as transportation can be found on the Visit Sepang app.
The enthusiasm of the MPSepang team was apparent from their attire — they were all wearing the “I love Sepang” T-shirts.

“Seeing everyone in the ‘I love Sepang’ T-shirt and knowing that all of us truly love Sepang, I am confident that we can put Sepang on the map, ” said Mohd Fauzi.

Selangor culture, tourism, Malay customs and heritage committee chairman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari, who was escorted by MPSepang motorcycle club convoy to launch the event at Cyberjaya, said tourism was one of the main sectors contributing to the country’s economic growth.

“To increase synergy, let’s all work together to be good hosts to visitors, both local and foreign.

“To gain the trust and confidence of tourists, we need to consistently provide services of the highest quality, ” he added.

Abdul Rashid said with the targeted number of tourists, it was estimated that Visit Sepang 2020 would generate a revenue of RM5bil.

As part of the Visit Sepang 2020 initiative, MPSepang also promoted “zero
waste” through proper waste management to ensure Sepang becomes a popular and clean tourist destination.

Certificates of appreciation were presented to various partners and stakeholders who came together to make Visit Sepang 2020 a success, including Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, Sepang International Circuit and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA).

The Visit Sepang 2020 mascot, “Atan”, also made an appearance at the launch.

Guests were also treated to dance performances and a rendition of Visit Sepang Year 2020 official song featuring singer Datuk Hattan at the event.
