MOTAC: VMY 2020 promotion on schedule

JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 29 -- The Visit Malaysia Year 2020 (VMY2020) promotion is still progressing as normal following the schedule of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) through its agencies.

In fact, the promotion for VMY2020 had already started since January 2018, said MOTAC deputy Secretary General (Culture) Saraya Arbi.

She said a large scale VMY2020 promotion campaign had already been carried out abroad including in Bangkok, Thailand; Berlin, Germany and also in London, United Kingdom.

At the domestic level, Tourism Malaysia had also conducted several promotions such as in Sabah, Sarawak and peninsula Malaysia, she said.

‘’In addition, we also hold co-operations with several nations to bring in foreign tourists to Malaysia. This has been implemented via several chartered flights, such as recently, when, for the first time, we brought in tourists from Khazakstan,’’ she told reporters at a friendly gathering with handicraft entrepreneurs at the Johor Craft Festival at the Padang Angsana Mall, here today.

Saraya said the VMY2020 promotion would be escalated further from Dec 31 through ‘Ambang 2020’.

‘’We will have a skylight show using drones as a launching gimmick during the night of the eve of the new year,’’ she said.

In addition, a day later, (Jan 1) a large scale reception for tourists together with the state governments and Tourism Malaysia would be held at 22 entry gates to Malaysia.

‘’Next year too, we will implement over 100 major events to ensure that when the tourists arrive, we have products to be viewed. And at the same time, we will will have an attractive list such as the locations of the 20 best eating places packages, 20 honeymoon packages and others on our website,’’ she said.

Also present at the ceremony was MOTAC’s new Secretary General, Datuk Dr Noor Zari Hamat.

Big Bike In The City to enliven VMY 2020

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 -- In conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 (VMY2020), Tourism Malaysia in collaboration with the Malaysia Association Tour Agency (MATA) today introduced a new tourism product called Big Bike In the City.

This new exhilarating experience of riding superbikes will allow tourists to explore the various tourist attractions in the country, well-known for its vibrant melting pot of cultures.

Tourists can explore the land of surprising contradictions from the bustling metropolis to its peaceful laid back countryside through this alternative mode of transport.

Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general Datuk Mohmed Razip Hasan said the product was introduced as part of efforts to achieve the target of 30 million tourist arrivals and generate RM100 billion in revenue next year.

“Only two days left before the VMY2020 and this event will greatly help promote Malaysia. For VMY2020, we have started the campaign much earlier, namely in July and it shows our seriousness.

“...throughout the campaign, we have received full support from non-governmental organisations, associations and service providers,” he told a press conference after the launching ceremony.

Meanwhile, MATA President Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun said the Big Bike In The City was a testimony of the good collaboration between the association and Tourism Malaysia.

“We are obliged to assist the government in promoting the VMY2020 and this is also the main purpose of our establishment. We will facilitate our members in efforts to engage with stakeholders, in particular, the government,” he said.

At the launching ceremony, about 70 superbikes under the Nomad Motorcycle Adventure agency took part in a city tour that passed through several locations starting at the Love @ MaTic, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Dataran Merdeka, the National Monument, Istana Negara, Batu Caves and KLCC.

Kazakhstan-Langkawi special chartered flights will boost VMY 2020

photo: Langkawi Development Authority fb

LANGKAWI, Dec 28 -- Three special chartered flights by Kompas Tour from Almaty, Kazakhstan to Langkawi are expected to boost the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 campaign to the duty-free resort island.

Today's seven-hour special chartered flight by a Boeing 757-200 Sunday Airlines, with 235 passengers on board, arrived at the Langkawi International Airport (LIA) at 10.30 am.

Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Musa Yusof said the initiative would boost the number of tourists from Kazakhstan to Malaysia, which registered 13,912 visitors as of September 2019, an increase of 33.6 per cent over the same period last year.

“The Kompas Tour special chartered flight is a collaboration between Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Embassy Alliance Travel (M) Sdn Bhd and Kompas Tour, which is one of the leading travel agencies in the Central Asia.

“The next flight after this will be on Jan 4 and 12. The three flights combined would bring a total 705 passengers. We hope the Almaty-Langkawi route will be well-received in Kazakhstan and Central Asia and, subsequently, special chartered flights will continue to grow especially to this island,” he said.

Musa was speaking to reporters after welcoming the arrival of the first Kompas Tour special chartered flight here today.

Also present were LADA chief executive officer Dr Hezri Adnan, Syarikat Penerbangan MAHB manager of airline marketing Mohamed Sallauddin Mohamed Shah and Ayer Hangat State Assemblyman Juhari Bulat.

Musa explained that the flights from Kazakhstan to Langkawi would not only bring tourists from Kazakhstan but also from its neighbouring countries in Central Asia such as Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

“Our promotion in Kazakhstan is not only to attract tourists from that country but also its nearby neighbours following the increasing number of tourists from Central Asia to Malaysia every year. The people of Central Asia have the means to visit abroad so we take this opportunity to introduce this country to them,'’ he said.

Meanwhile, Hezri said the strategic cooperation carried out by Tourism Malaysia and Kompas Tour had boosted the number of tourists from Central Asia.

‘’The Central Asian market is very big. This collaboration has opened a new market for Langkawi. For the record, Kompas Tour has brought in 461 tourists through two special chartered flights from Almaty in January this year. We laud this co-operation which has benefited Langkawi through the presence of tourists from Central Asia, ‘’ he added.

Idea-filled year for Sepang tourism

French tourists pose with Mah Meri dancers from Bukit Bangkung and the Visit Sepang Year 2020 mascot at the official launch of the tourism event by Sepang Municipal Council.

Seven-year-old Malaysian ice skater Sree Abiraame Chendren unwittingly became the topic of discussion at the Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) full board meeting in November.

It was proposed that she should be a candidate for tourism ambassador for the Visit Sepang Year 2020 (VSY2020) promotional campaign.

That her father Chendren Balakrishnan, who is special officer to Tanjung Sepat assemblyman Borhan Aman Shah, had distributed VSY2020 flyers at all his daughter’s competitions in Beijing, Abu Dhabi and Bangkok, was also a plus factor.

There is no official decision on this yet but as recognition for her skating achievements, MPSepang presented her with a RM1,000 cheque and RM2,000 in sponsorship fees for her event costumes and tracksuits in December.

An adorable brown mascot also became the subject of debate at an earlier council full board meeting when it was brought up that “Atan”, its chosen name, also meant female donkey in the Arabic language.

However, as its moniker was a common, easily remembered handle for many locals, the council stuck to its decision.

2019 was a busy year for Sepang as it went about preparing for VSY2020.

To kick-start the campaign, a 50-strong superbike convoy headed by MPSepang deputy president Muhammad Hafiz Shaari travelled 1,000km and visited nine local councils to distribute flyers in January.

It was a gruelling trip and health department director Kuzaini Hamidon had to finish the remaining legs of the tour in a van after coming down with fever.
Another stunt followed in the form of a 30-strong team up Mount Kinabalu to fly the VSY2020 flag eight months later.

Meanwhile, ideas poured in as to what could be offered as tourist draws.

The river cruises in Sungai Sepang and vast intertidal zones of Bagan Lalang beach which are already a favourite destination for anglers and picnickers were touted as star attractions.

A secluded spot near runway 32L of Kuala Lumpur International Airport was named as a hangout spot for aerophiles by like-minded councillor Hazimun Rahmat Mohammad, who suggested a recreation area be set up here during an urban beautification meeting.

Malaysia Airports responded by building an elevated deck sturdy enough to accommodate 40 people at one time.

The quaint town of Sungai Pelek made it to the tourism promotion list too.

A grand century-old bungalow in Ladang Teluk Merbau that was featured in Planter’s Tales, a book on plantation life by Mahbob Abdullah, and a ferry service behind Taman Ria, which takes motorcyclists and pedestrians across Sungai Sepang to Bukit Pelanduk in Seremban, were named as must-visit spots.

Because of the tourism drive, the name of late farmer, Hashim Pardi from Kampung Labu Lanjut, would forever be remembered by future generations as “Hashim Bom”.

Visitors can seek out village chief Damarulan Hassim for an oral history of how Hashim found an unexploded bomb believed to be left behind by Japanese forces during World War 2.

The element of suspense lies in how Hashim had thought nothing of carrying a bomb home with his bare hands. It was believed that the danger of the thing exploding did not cross his mind until alerted by a fellow villager.

On safety concerns over the many boats offering sightseeing tours in Sungai Sepang not having licences, MPSepang Corporate Unit and Public Relations director Norrehan Amat Kasman said through ongoing efforts with the Marine Department, six operators, all based at Jetty Sirip Biru in Bagan Lalang, were now authorised to carry passengers.

However, boat operators and fishermen have reasoned if the authorities want to collect fees, they must do their part to preserve the river.

In May, Kampung Tanjung Mas Batu Dua jetty operator Mashud Rosdi alerted StarMetro of the presence of algal bloom in Sungai Sepang.

Negri Sembilan Environmental Department (DOE) director Norhazni Mat Sari attributed it to waste discharged by animal farms upstream.

State Veterinary Services Regulatory Department head Dr Fahmi Ridza Mohamad Noor then said discussions were ongoing on possible solutions and as
it involved many agencies, it would take time.

A recent check revealed the situation at the jetty had not improved.

The fishing community, however, is looking forward to better fish hauls in the coming future with artificial reefs installed some two nautical miles off the Sungai Mesok Jetty at Kampung Batu Laut in Tanjung Sepat in October.

This is the fourth installation of artificial reefs in the area. The first two were in 2006 and 2008, involving 34 units. Another 19 units were introduced last year.
This year saw an additional 14 units and all were submerged in the same area. The total cost of the project for 2018 and 2019 was RM600,000.

Meanwhile, Tryke, an e-scooter ride sharing company that launched its service in Cyberjaya in November has finally been issued a licence by MPSepang to operate in the area.

Norrehan said approval was granted based on an established docking base system that encourages users from leaving the vehicle outside of its designated parking space, failing which, they will continue to be charged on a per minute basis.

Discounted city travel passes now available

www.myrapid.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: The largest operator of public transport in Klang Valley, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, will be selling discounted unlimited use travel passes at its facilities beginning today.

Available at all MRT, LRT, BRT and monorail stations, the MyCity pass will allow unlimited use of the Prasarana-operated rail and BRT network for either one day or three days.

When the MyCity pass was soft-launched in April, they were selling for RM25 (one day) and RM55 (three days), with the cost including the price of the Touch n Go-based card, which is set at RM5, and another RM5 as a minimum stored value on the card itself.

The discounted MyCity pass now costs RM20 and RM35 respectively – significant savings for those intending to use the trains (excluding KTM Komuter) extensively as they explore the city.
Existing holders of TnG cards will save even more, as they only need to pay RM10 and RM25 respectively, whether purchasing MyCity for the first time or for renewals.

The MyCity pass is Prasarana’s contribution to Visit Malaysia 2020, other than boosting public transport use in Klang Valley as it is open to all regardless of nationality.

The discounted MyCity pass will be available until Dec 31,2020.

According to the Prasarana group’s chief operating officer, Muhammad Nizam Alias, Prasarana decided to introduce the one day and three day passes in response to requests from customers, especially international travellers and customers outside of Klang Valley.

“Our regular customers have the privilege of unlimited travel with the use of the My100 pass for 30-day unlimited travels.

“On the other hand, these new passes provide immense convenience to non-Malaysians and non-regular users who need to move about extensively within a short period of time, ” he said in a recent statement.

“This initiative is also part of our contribution to Malaysia’s tourism industry as travelling on our integrated rail and BRT network will allow one to reach plenty of places of interests, eateries, and shopping outlets, ” Nizam added.

Meanwhile, Prasarana is also supporting the Ambang 2020 countdown at Dataran Merdeka here on New Year’s Eve by extending its network operation hours, though no further fare discounts, other than for existing concession holders, will be available.

The exact hours will be announced by this week, with more information expected at myrapid.com.my soon.

Arts' industry player in Kelantan suggested to wear traditional costume on weekends

KOTA BHARU, Dec 21 -- The art industry players in the state are recommended to adorn themselves in traditional costumes every weekend to enliven the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 (VMY2020) campaign.

Eastern Region Tourism Malaysia director Hafiz Hazin said the wearing of traditional costumes could entice tourists to get to know more about the state's culture and history.

"We plan to encourage the art fraternity to wear Kelantan traditional clothing every Friday and Saturday as part of the promotion of the state's custom as well as to support the Visit Malaysia Year 2020," he said during the Sang Tawal's Trace-History Learning In Traditional Costumes programme at Kota Bharu tourism zone here today.

The one-day programme officiated by Kelantan State Museum Corporation director Arifin Hussin was participated by 200 participants from the various branches of arts and culture including Kelantan Busana Association, Silat Association, Pendikir Association, Top (gasing) Association, Keruk and Rebana Ubi Association and Horse Riding Association.

Hafiz said the programme would boost the promotion of the museum in the Kota Bharu Tourism Zone to domestic and international tourists, particularly in welcoming them to the state.

"We hope with this activity it can promote and encourage domestic and international tourists to get to know the tourists' zone here as the must-visit place to learn about the state's culture," he said.

He said his department was also planning to provide Kelantan traditional costume renting service as one of the ways for the arts fraternity in the state to earn more income.

Meanwhile, Ariffin, who was reading the State Unity, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Md Anizam Abdul Rahman's speech, said that the state's government highly encouraged the organising of various programmes and activities to boost tourists arrivals to Kelantan.

"The programme carried out today, initiated by the Eastern Region Tourism Malaysia director and all organisers, is a unique programme, and I am confident that it will have a significant effect to civilization in Kelantan, indirectly spreading added value and positive impact to society as a whole.

"I hope with this kind of programmes, it could spur Kelantan and the country's economy in line with the current economic growth and indirectly help in achieving the tourist's arrival target next year," he said.

Four million passenger milestone

Muhammad Bakhtiar (in batik shirt), Liow (in blue blouse) and Md Derick (left) celebrating the four millionth milestone with Lim (third from left) and her children. – THOMAS YONG/The Star

JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 20 -- Senai International Airport, which is owned and operated by Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATSSB), today hit its latest milestone of handling four million passengers in a single year.

This also means that the airport has reached its maximum capacity of four million passengers per annum and SATSSB plans to invest RM20 million to expand the terminal building.

In a statement, the airport operator said the milestone was achieved after it received the four millionth passenger Lim Seoh Boey, who was travelling with her three children and arrived at the airport at 10:50 am via AirAsia flight AK 6051 from Kuala Lumpur.

Lim was welcomed with a special celebration led by Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, accompanied by Johor's State Tourism, Women & Family Development Committee chairman Liow Cai Tung and SATSSB chief executive officer Md Derick Basir.

Md Derick said the passenger volume for full year 2019 would hit a total of 4.2 million, a significant increase from the 3.5 million passengers handled in 2018.

“The growth is mainly attributed by the increased capacity created by the introduction of new routes and the additional flight frequencies to existing routes such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Seoul,” he added.

On the terminal expansion, Md Derick said the RM20 million project was expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2021 and would boost the terminal building's annual capacity by one million passengers to five million passengers.

The project includes the extension of the existing arrival and departure halls towards the south of the existing terminal building.

Key elements include the construction of four new departure and boarding gates, additional new seating area, a covered walkway connecting to aircraft parking bays, installation of additional baggage handling system and installation of escalators and elevators to link the existing terminal building to the new area.

“Senai Airport handles an average of over 11,500 passengers and 110 flight movements daily with 80 per cent of its operations and passengers contributed by AirAsia,” he said.

Currently, the airport is connected to seven international and 12 domestic destinations operated by five airlines – AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, Malindo Air and Jin Air.
