Sandakan's Agnes Keith House will be promoted as 'Dark Tourism'

SANDAKAN: The Agnes Keith House here will be developed as a "Dark Tourism" product.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the state Museum Department through the E-Seram programme will be undertaking the planning.

Dark tourism is a product that involves travelling to places associated with death and suffering.

The programme will give visitors the opportunity to spend a night at the house to experience for themselves the life of the famous American writer, Agnes Newton Keith, her husband, Harry Keith and their son, George, he said.

However, the programme had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world since last year.

He added that there were many locations in Sabah that have a history of war, destruction or tragedy that could be developed as a tourist attraction.

"Perhaps many do not know that the mansion on the hill holds a mystery," Jafry quipped.

Among Agnes' notes include experiences of horror she often went through during her stay in the house.

Agnes wrote: "I don't believe in ghosts. But every day I see a tall woman saying goodbye to her husband, picking up her baby and going down the street alone, standing at the end of the street and looking back."

A maid who worked in the mansion when Tom Bayles lived there from 1967 to 1968 saw a woman standing on the steps.

Many more notes in the form of articles were also displayed in one corner of the house which narrated the horror incident experienced by its occupants.

It proves that despite its uniqueness as well as its history, the Agnes Keith House also holds a paranormal mystery that would make it interesting to visit.

MOTAC Komited Jayakan Program Imunisasi COVID-19 Kebangsaan

Malaysia Airports submits regeneration plan for Subang Airport

Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) has recently submitted a comprehensive strategic plan for the long-term development of the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SAAS), or Subang Airport, to the government.

The plan is premised on three focus areas, namely, Aerospace Ecosystem, Business Aviation and Urban Community Airport. It is meant to propel SAAS into becoming the preferred aerospace and business aviation hub in Asia-Pacific in the next five years.

MAHB group CEO, Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh, said in a press statement: “Since mandated by the government in 2005 to develop (SAAS) into an international aerospace park, we have grown the ecosystem by four times, attracting the presence of 60 leading brand names and facilitating capital inflows of over RM500 million (US$120 million).”

He said the regeneration plan will grow the ecosystem further by three times, doubling the number of global and local operators to more than 100 that will create and support a 19,000-strong high skilled workforce.

“It will spearhead Malaysia’s transition into high technology driven IR4.0 industries and high-income nation with a projected value of over RM10.0 billion to the national economy. This is very much aligned to the strategic thrusts identified in the government’s Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 and will achieve the aspirations of the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030,” he added.

Mohd Shukrie said MAHB is ready now to undertake the SAAS regeneration plan as it has sufficient internal cash reserves.

He added: “The plan requires infrastructure investment of RM300 million staggered over the next five years. This is well within our capability as we still have a strong cash and money market position of RM1.6 billion with RM914 million available for the Malaysian operations. The funding for ready-built or build-to-suit facility can be easily facilitated via a combination of internal cash as well as project financing options.”

Pelanjutan Pengecualian Pembayaran Fi Lesen Bagi Pengusaha- Pengusaha Pelancongan Dan Pemandu Pelancong Yang Dilesenkan Di Bawah Akta Industri Pelancongan 1992 [Akta 482]

  1. Pelanjutan pengecualian fi pembaharuan lesen dan lesen-lesen tambahan bagi pengusaha-pengusaha pelancongan dan pemandu pelancong yang memohon pembaharuan lesen bermula dari 1 Julai 2021 sehingga 31 Disember 2021;

Malaysia-based Vendfun introduces Hybrid Kiosk for budget hotels, homestays

Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk installed at GM Hotel Sunway Metro

Vendfun, a hospitality kiosk solutions provider based in Melaka, has launched an innovative 2-in-1 kiosk that combines self-service check-in and check-out features with vending capabilities, which will assist hotel operators to manage resources and reduce operating costs.

Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk is equipped with a 50-inch touch-screen panel that allows guests to check-in and check-out, as well as redeem promo vouchers and purchase products such as food and drinks. The patent-pending Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk is marketed to budget hotels and homestays in Malaysia and available on rental and rent-to-own bases directly from Vendfun.

Key features of Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk are a cashless payment facility, a passport scanner, a receipt printer, a room card dispenser, and built-in vending capabilities. The Hybrid Kiosk is also compatible with any hotel property management system (PMS) software to allow hotels to customise features of their preference.

Benny Wee, founder and CEO of Vendfun, said in a press statement that the launch of Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk comes as “many hotel operators are dealing with persistent human resources issues while scrambling to cut costs to weather the Covid-19 pandemic, and beyond”.

By automating check-in and check-out services, hotels can “increase operational efficiency and provide convenience to hotel guests”, he added.

Additionally, Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk has been touted as the first-of-it-kind product that provides a return on investment opportunity whereby hotels can create a new income stream by selling products through the kiosk.

Three units of Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk have been installed in hotels in Peninsular Malaysia, namely, Fenix Inn Hotel in Melaka, Sky View Hotel in Dengkil, Selangor; and GM Hotel Sunway Metro in Selangor.

Vendfun has been getting orders from other hotels in Selangor and they expect to install more Vendfun Hybrid Kiosks in the coming months.

The company plans to add new solutions to its kiosks soon, including memberships and e-concierge services to provide a complete elevated staying experience to guests.

As part of its roadmap, Vendfun plans to add an artificial intelligence component to the kiosks by year-end so that hotels can offer “more personalised services” and enhanced security through the use of facial recognition technology, said Wee.
