KUALA LUMPUR, 8 August 2019 – The month of
December will witness the inaugural Races of Malaysia where two world
championships – the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) presented by OSCARO season
finale and the FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) – will debut at Sepang
International Circuit from December 14-15, promising a weekend of Motorsports
Festival for fans.
The year-end event marks a new chapter in Sepang International Circuit’s effort to bring more world-class racing to the region. The event will be the first time that two world championships will be held back-to-back in one weekend at the circuit.
The event is backed by Tourism Malaysia and promoted by Eurosports Events – a leader in world-class event management.
The decision to host the WTCR and EWC events was based on popularity and voted by Malaysian fans through an online poll done by SIC last year.
The WTCR – a championship featuring production cars with modified brakes and aerodynamic additions, will have its super-finale in Malaysia which is set to finish under the brilliance of the newly-installed floodlights at Sepang International Circuit. It will be the maiden WTCR night race in the calendar.The race will feature three sprint races with 13 teams and 26 drivers on grid.
The EWC will see the inaugural 8 Hours of Sepang where the finest Asian teams aiming to qualify for the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hours the following year go head to head with EWC’s permanent teams who will be invited to the Sepang race. The 8 Hours of Sepang will be the second race on the 2019-2020 EWC calendar. It is slated to finish at sunset.
The two races — dubbed the Races of Malaysia — which will be held back-to-back in December, mark an exciting shift in the calendar at the Sepang International Circuit after the departure of the Formula One. The famed 5.543km track still holds the distinction as the prime tourist attraction every year during the MotoGP World Championship.
As an initiative to boost the sports tourism industry in Malaysia, and in line with the promotion of Visit Malaysia 2020, Tourism Malaysia has taken the reins to collaborate with SIC to have two of the most exciting races at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) as part of the VMY 2020 that was recently launched.
Last year, between the months of October and November, Malaysia recorded an influx of tourists from Singapore and Indonesia, which amounted to 2,239,373 visitors. The Malaysian MotoGP was held in early November. It was expected that 30% of the visitors attended the race and extended their stay in Malaysia for a holiday in conjunction with the MotoGP. And with the double header being in December, it is just fitting for the tourists to stay on for their holiday season in Malaysia.
Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, Datuk Mohamadin Ketapi said the Races of Malaysia, EWC and WTCR is a great addition to the Visit Malaysia 2020 calendar of events to strengthen Malaysia’s profile as a sports tourism destination.
“I strongly believe that sporting events like the Races of Malaysia should remain as one of the main drivers in the Malaysian tourism industry. Major sporting events like these have a degree of trickle-down effect that will benefit not only the tourism industry but also the general economy in Malaysia,” he said.
“Malaysia has been well known as a hub for motorsports in the region for so long, and the Sepang International Circuit is one of the most demanding tracks in the world. I have no doubt that the FIM Endurance World Championships and the FIA World Touring Car Cup will turn out to be a success.”
Speaking at the launch, Sepang International Circuit Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Razlan Razali said he was thrilled to have two more major international events at the circuit.
“As we all aware, Sepang International Circuit is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year,” said Dato’ Razlan. “For 20 years, we have strived to bring many world-class events to appease motorsports fans not only from Malaysia but also from the region.
“For the WTCR and EWC events at Sepang, we are grateful and delighted to join forces with Tourism Malaysia as they kick off their Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign. The support we get from Tourism Malaysia goes a long way in ensuring that Malaysia stands out as the main destination for motorsports tourism in the region.”
The event does not just focus on bringing tourist attendance to Malaysia, but also a platform to develop Malaysian talents into world premier racing. SIC today unveiled the Malaysian talents that will be taking place as wild card drivers at the Races of Malaysia. Mitchell Cheah who recently won 2nd overall in TCR Germany in Austria and twice Honda Rookie Challenge Award winner will be taking his seat in the SIC WTCR team alongside Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah who took up a new challenge to race in touring car outside of his MotoGP experience. Another driver, Douglas Khoo from Viper Niza Racing who has been competing in TCR Asia and Asian Le Mans since 2016 will be grabbing the third wildcard spot for WTCR.
“It’s a great opportunity for motorheads – four wheels and two wheels enthusiasts – to come for this event and get the best of both world.” added Dato’ Razlan.
“As a new event on our calendar, we are putting a modest expectation on the fans turnout in December. We are expecting some 30,000 fans – from Malaysia and around the region – to converge in Sepang during the weekend.”
The excitement begins on December 11 with a Downtown City Parade in Bukit Bintang. Then the track actvities begins from Thursday with EWC race on December 14 and the WTCR race on Sunday 15 December. Fans can also expect a 3 day jam packed event with exciting activities off track. SIC will be hosting the finale of the e-WTCR with Race Room, an after race concert with local well known acts, over 40 booths to explore all at the Motorsports Festival Area and all day long fan engagement activities with the teams.
Fans can catch all the actions with just one race ticket for two world championships and a total of four races throughout the weekend. Tickets for the Main Grandstand are available at RM275 each, while Paddock Pass with access to the Main Grandstand is at RM450 each. For those who would like to watch, dine and network, catch all the excitement at the VIP Club. A two-day VIP Club pass is at RM3,710 each while the Sunday only pass at RM2,968. A two-day child VIP Club pass is available at RM1,855.
