Kampar River Festival has potential for extreme sports tourism


GOPENG, July 6 (Bernama) -- The Kampar River Festival has the potential to become one of Perak’s signature programmes in promoting extreme sports in the state to the international level.

State Tourism, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Tan Kar Hing said the festival, organised for the first time in Perak as well as in the country, and yet the response received have been very encouraging when more than 400 participants, both local as well as from abroad, showed their interest to participate.

He said the main events of the three-day festival which started yesterday was the white water rafting, kayak race and tubing race.

“In today’s events, we have participants not only from Malaysia but also from abroad such as Indonesia, Brunei, Chile, France, Singapore, Germany.

“It can be said as a successful event and we (state government) will always provide support to them in organising such evnt so that it can become be a signature programme for the state, Malaysia and at the international level as a whole,” he told reporters after officiating the Kampar River Festival at Dataran Jahang, here, today.

He added that apart from Sungai Kampar, several other locations such as Ulu Slim, Sungkai and Kuala Kangsar have also been identified to have potential to be developed as extreme sports locations, though it was still at the planning stage.
