KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Johor’s Desaru Coast has been named one of Time Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places of 2021.

Marking its third edition of the list which comprises 100 of the magazine’s top destinations around the world, Desaru Coast is the only destination in Malaysia to make it on the list this year.

Time Magazine pays tribute with this year’s list to the people and businesses at the forefront of the industries that, amid extraordinary circumstances, have found ways to adapt, build and innovate.

According to the magazine, Desaru Coast offers the global audience a beach escape experience with their range of international hotels, golf-courses, and cruises through the Sedili Wetlands.

It also highlighted the upcoming opening of the Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal which will offer increased transit options for Singapore and Indonesia.

According to Desaru Coast Destination Resort’s Managing Director, Roslina Arbak, they were honoured to be recognised by a renowned publication and were proud to be representing both Johor and Malaysia.

“This is an outstanding achievement for a team only two years in operations, and after what has been and continues to be a challenging time for the industry.

“With this notable feather in our cap, we look forward to welcoming guests from all over the world once travel resumes,” Roslina said.

Nestled against 17 kilometres of pristine beachfront, Desaru Coast is also the home to world class hotels including Asia’s first, One and Only Desaru Coast, Anantara Desaru Coast Resort and Villas, The Westin Desaru Coast Resort and Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast.

Desaru Coast also has two world class golf courses and is home to the region’s largest adventure waterpark.

Other places that are in the Top 100 list also include the Portuguese town of Arouca (home to the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge) and the continent of Antarctica (it will experience a rare total solar eclipse in December).

Malaysia Airports to study feasibility of air taxi services

Malaysia Airports has signed a tripartite MoU with vertiport company Skyports and urban air mobility (UAM) pioneer Volocopter to explore the deployment of electric air taxi services in Malaysia.

As a first step, the parties will conduct a feasibility study examining suitable vertiport solutions to enable the safe take-off and landing of passenger eVTOL vehicles, considering factors such as demand, customer flow, and how to integrate UAM operations.

The collaboration forms part of the five-year Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Subang (LTSAAS) Regeneration plan. It will explore the deployment of electric air taxi services at LTSAAS as well as other locations throughout Malaysia.

Malaysia Airports’ Group CEO, Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh, said: “Air taxi technology and revolution is the next big thing that we want to see happen in Malaysian aviation. With LTSAAS offering a synergistic ecosystem within the aviation and aerospace sectors, it is timely for us to explore this new service as it complements other key developments of the regeneration initiative.

“Volocopter and Skyports are both leaders in their respective fields of advanced air mobility and we hope to further future-proof LTSAAS’s position in Asia-Pacific by catering to research, assembly, manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul, in addition to air taxi operations. Our objective is to provide end-to-end, mid- to high-value capabilities and solutions that are anchored by top-tier operators.

“LTSAAS Regeneration will offer various development opportunities to aviation and aerospace players worldwide, thus, echoing the government’s original intent to turn LTSAAS into both an international aerospace centre and business aviation hub.”

Pangkor Island Is Set To Be The Next Covid-19 Free Destination

LUMUT, 25 July 2021 – The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has started its second phase of the Tourism Recovery Plan in Pangkor Island, Perak, with a mass vaccination programme to prepare the island as the next Covid-19 Free Destination.

Pangkor Island has been selected to pilot Phase 2 of MOTAC’s COVID-19 Free Destination Programme. It is expected to reach the target of 80% of the group's immunity level by early September this year.

Following the pilot destination Langkawi, Kedah in Phase 1, more islands will follow suit in an attempt to revive the tourism industry, such as Redang Island, Perhentian Island, Tioman Island, and many others.

In cooperation with Manjung’s District & Land Office and District Health Office, the vaccination outreach programme aims to achieve herd immunity for the island’s population. At least 8,026 people are eligible to receive the vaccine from the total projected population of 11,500 in Pangkor Island. As of 11th July 2021, a total of 1,002 people have received their first dose of the vaccine while 1,056 people have completed their vaccination with two doses.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri in her official visit to Pulau Pangkor’s Women and Children Health Clinic today said that the vaccination program has started on 16th July 2021 for three (3) days a week (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) for eight (8) consecutive weeks. It is targeted to vaccinate at least 540 people per day.

“Based on the records of the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) in Manjung District, the first dose is expected to be completed on 8th August, followed by the second dose on 13th August 2021. Hence, it is estimated that Pangkor Island will achieve its herd immunity in early September,” she added.

To promote its Rindu Melancong? Jom Vaksin Dulu! Campaign, MOTAC has also collaborated with the Malaysian Association of Taxi/ Limousine Drivers and Operators and Car Rental Operators (PETEKMA) Pangkor Island Branch to facilitate the movement of villagers to receive their vaccines. The campaign is also actively carried out by Tourism Malaysia to encourage locals to get their vaccinations so they can travel safely.

"Even though they have registered through the MySejahtera app, we will try to help speed up and double the number of the vaccination rate," said YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy. "We at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) are helping to double the number of people, including the frontline workers in the tourism sector."

Malaysia Maintains Top-Ranked Position In GLOBAL MUSLIM TRAVEL INDEX (GMTI) 2021

PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA, 14 JULY 2021: Malaysia has once again topped the list of best Muslim-friendly holiday destinations for Muslim travellers, according to the MasterCard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2021, launched during the inaugural Halal in Travel Global Summit 2021.

YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture Malaysia, expressed her appreciation and gratitude to all industry players for their continued efforts in making Malaysia the top destination of choice in Muslim-friendly travel. She said in her keynote address at the summit: “Alhamdulillah, all praises to Allah. It gives me great pleasure to learn that Malaysia is placed atop the GMTI for 2021, a position it has defended ever since the GMTI was first released back in 2015. It is the collective effort of all industry players that we have achieved this recognition.”

The GMTI 2021 report stated that although the pandemic had ravaged the tourism sector, some destinations were ready to be activated in anticipation of borders reopening. These destinations had a strong foundation in Muslim-friendly facilities and services, and had continued their stakeholder awareness, capacity building, and destination marketing to the Muslim outbound markets even during the pandemic.

It stated that Malaysia remained the top-ranked destination in the GMTI 2021 as it had been since the launch of the Index in 2015.

Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy acknowledged that this achievement springs from the fruits of Malaysia’s continued and steadfast commitment towards developing the Muslim-friendly travel, a model that is becoming more and more significant in the global market.

“Malaysia is a melting pot of different races, cultures and demographics, all living together harmoniously under one roof. This attribute makes Malaysia a standout offering of unique Asian experience.”

“Halal in travel is an essential for Muslim travellers and is part and parcel of Islamic Tourism. Malaysia, being a Muslim majority nation, has many Halal offerings whilst featuring many tourism packages that are compliant with Islamic principles – these are the foundation of a successful Islamic Tourism model destination,” she opined.

She took the opportunity to call upon tourism industry players to ready themselves for tourism beyond COVID-19. “Moving forward, it’s important that we leverage on this achievement to further improve ourselves and explore more opportunities to prepare Malaysia for the reopening of travel and the recovery of Muslim tourists to our destination,” she said.

She further elaborated that her ministry, via its agency Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) would continue striving towards developing better understanding of the post-COVID-19 requirements of the Muslim tourist market, and enhance the facilities, products, and services that are needed.

It is here that ITC’s key roles in Islamic Tourism research and training are important. Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy noted: “In the field of research, ITC has shared knowledge through its symposiums, and encouraged innovative ideas and expanded the potential of the Muslim-friendly Tourism and Hospitality space through a focus on research. I urge industry players to learn and apply this knowledge to serve the needs of the market better.”

The Minister also noted ITC’s contribution as “a crucial bridge connecting Malaysia’s culture, arts, heritage, and other commercial attractions with the Islamic Tourism and Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality concept.” The development of the Muslim-Friendly Tour Guide course for licensed tour guides and its advocacy for Malaysia’s cuisines and heritage attractions as a major draw to attract Muslim tourists are some of the efforts made by ITC to improve the product and service offerings of Malaysia to Muslim tourists.

The Minister also emphasised the importance of standards and certification as a means to promote trust and branding. “Initiatives such as ITC’s Muslim-friendly Accommodation Recognition (MFAR) gives assurance to Muslim hotel guests. This effort enables Muslim tourists to easily identify accommodations that cater to their needs such as availability of Halal food and provision of prayer facilities. It also serves as a marketing and branding tool for the hotels to give assurance to their Muslim clientele,” she said.

Among its global network, ITC is considered a leading authority on Muslim-friendy tourism, being widely recognised by member states of the Organisation of Islamic Corporation (OIC). This is evident in ITC’s collaborations with OIC via the latter’s key agencies, such as the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) and the Standing Committee Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC) of the OIC, where ITC has delivered training and consultancy sessions on MFTH for its fellow OIC member states.

ITC is also widely recognised abroad for its contribution towards establishing guidelines and standards for Muslim-Friendly tourism services, the Minister said.

“In this regard, ITC is the project coordinator for the Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Tourism Working Group for Muslim-friendly Tourism Development and has been nominated to be the lead coordinator for the development of Halal Spa at the OIC-SMIIC (Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries) level.”

With Malaysia situated in the ASEAN region, she also expressed hope the region would continue and sustain itself as a Muslim-friendly one. “Muslim travellers exhibit two main attributes, an inclination to spend more and higher tendency for longer stays. They want a worry-free experience where their religious needs are met whilst enjoying the pleasures of destinations they travel to. Thus, all of us, in ASEAN, have so much to gain from the many potentials that the Islamic Tourism and Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality segments have to offer,” she said.

Malaysia hotels draw growing investor interest amid pandemic

The pandemic has exacted a toll on the hospitality industry, with more hotel owners putting their properties up for sale at below market rates, providing an opportune time for investors to make their move. Amid such a climate, hotels in Malaysia have attracted growing interest from investors.

Listings of Malaysia hotels for sale on Zerin Properties has increased by 40 per cent year-to-date, with rising interest from investors, both local and overseas.

Zerin Properties managing director and CEO, Previndran Singhe, shared that one of the reasons for the uptick in investor interest for hotel assets in Malaysia is that asking prices for these properties have dropped between 10 to 35 per cent as compared to pre-lockdown. As well, he added, the ringgit is very competitive in comparison with Singapore and US dollars.

He said: “Our investors are also strongly looking at Vietnam and the Philippines. Ownership structures in Thailand and Indonesia make investments a bit more challenging as compared with Malaysia.”

Previndran added that Malaysian-based investors are eyeing properties and making offers on hotels in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. Meanwhile, foreign buyers who have always shown interest in properties in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi are now also looking at Kota Kinabalu and Johor, especially Johor Bahru and Desaru.

He said: “Interest is driven by the strong domestic rebound after the movement control order 1.0 last year, as well as robust markets overseas that have proven travel is still in demand. In Malaysia, travel recovery might take awhile but they are prepared to wait. Once 70 to 80 per cent of the population is vaccinated, I anticipate travel bubbles will be formed within South-east Asia first before extending beyond.”

The number of new Covid-19 cases has been increasing rapidly in the country to the point that the healthcare system is on the verge of collapse. This has resulted in the government imposing a ban on interstate travel nationwide since early 2021.

Insufficient assistance and support from the government coupled with harsh lockdowns that prevent hotels from accepting leisure guests, offering dine-ins at their restaurants and renting event spaces to organisers, have threatened the survival of hotel businesses this year.

Previndran shared: “We are seeing more and more hotel owners approaching us to sell their hotels over the past two months.”

Istana Hotel Kuala Lumpur had given notice to its associates last month that it would close on September 1. With the current harsh business environment, Previndran anticipates more hotel closures this year, across all locations in the country.

Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners executive director, Shaharuddin M Saaid, concurs with Previndran’s view and reveals two possibilities – hotel owners may choose to close temporarily and reopen when the business environment improves, or they may close for good and look for a buyer if the lockdown and ban on interstate travel continues indefinitely with no certainty of business recovery.

He has seen an increased number of enquiries from overseas investors seeking information on hotel properties, especially three- and four-star hotels in Kuala Lumpur.

He said: “Some property owners that have listed their properties for sale last year, but were unable to dispose of them, have lowered their asking prices. This is a good time for investors looking for a good deal.”

According to the Hotel Industry Survey Report by the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), as of mid-June, out of 320 hotel respondents, two have permanently closed and 91 have shuttered temporarily. By percentage, almost 71 per cent are still operating, most of which are dependent on quarantine needs, while others are catering to guests from essential service sectors.

MAH’s CEO, Yap Lip Seng, said: “With (Covid-19) cases breaking new records these past two weeks and insufficient assistance and support from the government, I don’t see things improving anytime soon.”

He shared that the key to moving forward is highly dependent on the National Immunisation Programme, aimed at achieving herd immunity in the country.

Langkawi eyed as launchpad for Malaysia’s tourism comeback

Langkawi is planning to reopen its doors to foreign travellers soon and be promoted as a Covid-free destination, under a pilot project by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) to kickstart the country’s tourism recovery.

Once successful, the pilot project will be extended to other localities and islands across the country, Noor Zari Hamat, MOTAC secretary-general, said at the Islamic Tourism Centre Corporate forum held last week.

While Noor Zari did not specify a start date for the pilot project, he stated that 80 per cent of the population had to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity before the pilot project could take off.

In a report by Bernama last month, Kedah chief minister, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, said he was hoping the project could take off in September or October, with Langkawi welcoming fully vaccinated foreign tourists.

Anthony Wong, president of Langkawi Business Association, opined that to date, between 35 to 45 per cent of the population in Langkawi had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine and that at least 20 per cent of the population had received both doses.

Wong added that he has been talking with senior officers at Tourism Malaysia who told him they were trying to get international and regional airlines to resume their services to Langkawi.

He said some stakeholders in Langkawi, such as boat operators, hotels and tour operators, are preparing for the reopening of the island by “getting their house in order”, while others are taking a wait-and see approach.

Uzaidi Udanis, president, Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (MITA), pointed out that tourism activities in Langkawi has been at a standstill since March, when inter-district and interstate travel was banned by the government to contain the spread of Covid-19. However, even before March, Langkawi had seen a drop in the number of domestic tourists.

He shared that the main task of MITA currently is to prepare members for the reopening and to ensure stakeholders are ready to receive international tourists.

Uzaidi said that following discussions with stakeholders, three key issues have been identified: first, the lack of human resources as many locals who had been working in Langkawi have since returned to their hometowns; two, the maintenance of tourism products which have been neglected due to the temporary ban on domestic tourism; and three, product readiness.

“We need to ensure we have very good products and local storytellers to ensure international guests have a very good experience when they visit. We are competing with the likes of the Maldives, Bali and Phuket,” he said.

Adam Kamal, head of contracting & domestic market at Ice Holidays, shared that authorities in Langkawi should also ensure that the health facilities are adequate to handle international travellers, who might be infected with Covid-19.

“We should take heed of what had happened in Phuket”, he said, referring to the incident where Phuket reported its first Covid-19 case from overseas on July 7 after reopening to international tourists.

MTC taps UNITAR to upskill tourism, hospitality workers

Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC) has signed an MoU with UNITAR International University (UNITAR) to upskill and reskill tourism and hospitality workers who have been retrenched during the pandemic to prepare them for new job opportunities once international borders reopen.

“Investment in skills upgrading and training during this downtime is critical, as we seek to enable the industry to emerge stronger and transformed in the new normal,” MTC president Uzaidi Udanis said during the online MoU signing ceremony between MTC and UNITAR.

“The travel industry in the new normal is going to be very different from what it was. Travellers will do their research and buy their travel direct, bypassing the travel agent. To stay relevant, we must change according to the needs of the market. Travel agents have to be abreast with the latest digital technology, including AI and database management.

“With this collaboration between MTC and UNITAR, workers in tourism and hospitality businesses would be able to pick up new skills and capabilities to meet future challenges.”

MTC organising chairman and deputy president, K Thangavelu, said the MoU agreement is important to MTC for three reasons. “It demonstrates our strong support for UNITAR’s efforts to expand and strengthen its tourism faculty, it harnesses our people’s capabilities to create and apply innovative reskilling and upskilling solutions, and it is an important part of our continuing contribution to industry and community development in Malaysia.”

Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, vice chancellor of UNITAR, shared that the university is working with MTC and its key players to push Malaysia’s economic recovery plan for the tourism industry by offering hospitality-related courses to upskill employees and agency owners under MTC.

UNITAR is the first, and currently, only university to collaborate with MTC to offer a fully online learning environment for hospitality and tourism education. The Hospitality and Tourism Department at UNITAR will offer Diploma in Tourism Management, Diploma in Hotel Management, Bachelor of Hospitality Management, and Masters in Hospitality Management.

Tourism Malaysia & UITM Go Virtual To Discuss The Rise Of Millennial Travel

PUTRAJAYA, 8 July 2021 – Tourism Malaysia through its regional office Tourism Malaysia Central Region, conducted a webinar discussing responsible and niche tourism preferred by the millennials, the impacts faced by the tourism industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and interesting career opportunities through niche tourism products.

“Exploring Malaysia’s Niche Tourism Segment: The Rise of Millennial Travel” was held on 8th July 2021 through the WebinarJam platform and was attended by both students and professionals of the industry. The webinar discussed the importance of promoting niche tourism products and incorporating more sustainable practices as measures towards responsible tourism, especially in preparing to restart tourism once Malaysia reaches herd immunity.

Being the most technology-driven generation today, the millennials are currently the largest group of the world’s population, at approximately 31.5% according to statista.com, making them an ideal demographic for the industry. Millennials, or Gen Y, is known to be the most educated generation especially due to the technology era, making them more aware and vocal of global issues such as climate change and sustainability.

With Tourism Malaysia’s new objective to promote Malaysia as the Top of the Mind Ecotourism Destination in the World, the webinar also discussed how the Malaysian tourism industry is now focusing on maximising the country’s existing resources through ecotourism, rural and experiential tourism, as well as enhancing niche tourism products such as birding, diving, and cycling. In addition, the webinar explored the shifting trend faced by MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions), one of the industry’s most important segments, especially after living in the new norm.

This webinar is the outcome of a collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and the Faculty of Tourism & Hotel Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam. A panel of highly experienced professionals were invited as guest speakers, namely Mr Andrew Sebastian; President and Chief Executive Officer of Ecotourism & Conservation Society Malaysia (ECOMY), Tn. Syed Abdul Rahman Syed Hasan; Founder and Director of Kids Scuba Malaysia, and Mr Noor Ahmad Hamid; newly appointed Chief Operating Officer of Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).

Mr Zulkifly Md Said, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, emphasised how the millennials have now become the industry’s most important marketing demographic, “The pandemic has accelerated the use of technology and digitalisation in all sectors and the tourism industry is no exemption. The millennials and the young travellers are quick to adapt to these changes, thus Tourism Malaysia realises the importance of this market segment in strategising marketing activities to rejuvenate the tourism industry.”

Vaccines, digital solutions give impetus to travel recovery: UNWTO

The global vaccination rollout and increased adoption of digital solutions for safe travel should lead to a rise in international mobility over the weeks and months ahead, the latest data from the UNWTO has shown.

According to the newest edition of the Travel Restrictions Report from the UN agency, as of June 1, 29 percent of all destinations worldwide have their borders completely closed to international tourism.

Of these, more than half have been completely closed to tourists since May 2020 or longer, with the majority of these belonging to the SIDS (small island developing states) of Asia and the Pacific. In comparison, just three destinations (Albania, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic) are completely open to tourists, with no restrictions now in place.

One in three (34 percent) of all destinations are partially closed, and 36 percent require a negative Covid-19 test result upon arrival, and in some cases, in combination with a quarantine requirement.

The data confirmed the trend towards destinations adopting more nuanced, evidence-and-risk-based approaches to restrictions on travel, particularly in light of the evolving epidemiological situation and the emergence of new variants of the virus. Indeed, 42 percent of all destinations have introduced specific restrictions for visitors from destinations with variants of concern, ranging from the suspension of flights and closing of borders to compulsory quarantine.

Additionally, since most of those destinations with the strictest measures have some of the lowest rates of vaccination, the data also indicated a link between vaccination speed and easing of restrictions. In comparison, those destinations that have higher rates of vaccination and where countries are able to work together on harmonised rules and protocols such as those being employed in the Schengen area of the European Union, are better-placed to allow tourism to slowly return.

“Governments are instrumental for the restart and recovery of tourism through collaboration, use of data and digital solutions”, said UNWTO secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili.

Regional differences with regards to travel restrictions remain. 70 percent of all destinations in Asia and the Pacific are completely closed, compared with just 13 percent in Europe, as well as 20 percent in the Americas, 19 percent in Africa and 31 percent in the Middle East.

Assessing current requirements for vaccinated passengers, 17 percent of all destinations worldwide specifically mention vaccinated passengers in their regulations. In most cases, travel restrictions continue to apply to fully vaccinated passengers (who have received two doses of an approved vaccine), though in others, all restrictions are lifted. UNWTO expects that this will significantly evolve over the coming weeks.

The report indicated that the restart of global tourism will remain muted so long as governments continue to advise caution. Four of the 10 top source markets, which generated 25 percent of all international arrivals in 2018, keep advising their citizens against non-essential travel abroad.
