Legoland scales new heights

The lego Christmas tree will be at the park until January.

JOHOR BAHRU: The first Legoland park in Asia is getting into the Christmas spirit with another first -- Asia's tallest Lego Christmas tree.

Legoland Malaysia unveiled the 9m tree at a special lighting ceremony recently.
Created with more than 400,000 Lego Duplo bricks, it towers over The Beginning area of the 31ha park. Decorated with 260 Lego ornaments, the tree will be at the park until January. Legoland Malaysia general manager Siegfried Boerst lit the tree.
Present were Christmas carollers, children and Legoland mascot Ollie. The tree will light up every evening from 7pm.
"It's great to be celebrating our first Christmas here at Legoland Malaysia with Asia's largest Lego Christmas tree," said Boerst. "Legoland is all about bringing the family together for a day of fun so Christmas is one of our favourite times of year. At our parks across the world, the Christmas tree has become an annual tradition."
The tree took about 10 weeks to build and weighs more than 6,000kg. Designed with an advanced computer programme, it took a team of nine people to complete the assembly. The initial design and building was done in the Czech Republic where the largest Lego model shop is located.
The tree was shipped to Malaysia in 40 parts and assembled at the Park by Legoland Malaysia model builders. The tree has been fitted with 108 special Lego LED candles and is designed to withstand local weather condition.
Visitors were treated to carol singing by youths from the Calvary Teenage Girl's Home of Johor Baru. The choir of 16 girls sang seasonal favourites such as Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, Jingle Bells and 12 Days of Christmas.
Several activities have been planned as part of the celebrations, including special walking characters, storytelling sessions and Christmas ornament building activities. The building sessions will be held at Lego Academy daily from 11am to 5pm. Visitors can choose to either participate in a free building session or purchase specially packed bricks at the Brick Shop. With the purchase, visitors can learn how to build each item with Legoland Malaysia model builders for several hours every day and take home the festive ornaments.
Other Lego Christmas products are also available at both retail outlets. This includes items such as Advent calendars, Lego baubles, Santa sleigh sets and holiday T-shirts.
