CYBERJAYA, 23 MAY 2019 – Tourism Malaysia called out to members of the Malaysian media to support the Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign with more positive news coverage on the country.

Datuk Musa Yusof, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, said, “I hope that the Malaysian media will continue to support our tourism industry with positive coverage of our tourism, arts and culture as the industry has provided positive impact to the country in terms of socio-economic development.”

Malaysia’s tourism industry had contributed 14.9% to GDP in 2017 as compared to 10.4% in 2005. Employment in the tourism industry had also increased to 3.4 million persons in 2017, contributing 23.2% to total employment.

He said this during the Sembang Santai iftar and networking session with the Putrajaya Media Club at Cyberview Resort and Spa in Cyberjaya.

The event was held to enhance relations between Tourism Malaysia and the media while updating them on the Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign.

He informed the media that this was the fifth Visit Malaysia campaign organised after the ones in 1990, 1994, 2007 and 2014. The Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign aims to bring in 30 million tourists and RM100 billion tourist receipts.

Malaysia has successfully won the bid to host a series of business events in Malaysia, and this is expected to add to the number of tourists spending their time in the country next year. Among them are the PATA Adventure Travel and Responsible Tourism Conference and Mart in February, the PATA Destination Marketing Forum in November and a series of APEC meetings.

Promotions for Visit Malaysia 2020 had kicked off successfully early this year with Malaysia being made Partner Country at ITB Berlin, an important travel trade event in Europe which saw 10,000 exhibitors from 185 countries, 160,000 visitors and 5,000 international media participating.

The campaign logo will be launched by the Prime Minister of Malaysia during the Malaysia Open House celebration for Hari Raya Aidil Fitri on 21/22 June at the Royal Museum in Kuala Lumpur.

Datuk Musa also hoped that all government ministries/agencies, private sector and the public would help to promote and make the Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign a success.
