Dr Ng surprises long-stay guests

Imagine you are a tourist, having dinner at your favourite place, and suddenly the Tourism Minister of that country walks up to you and asks if you are enjoying your stay.
About 20 long-staying foreign guests of Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa in Penang went wide-eyed when Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen did just that.
On her recent official visit to Penang, Dr Ng decided to make an unscheduled surprise stop and chatted with such a group. “We are so pleased that the Tourism Minister would come and say hello to us,” said Swedish guest Sven Gunnar Karlstrom, 81.

Dr Ng was also introduced to German Wilma Budke, 85, who has been a returning guest of the resort since 1978, and would have stayed in Penang for more than 5,000 nights, or a total of almost 14 years, by May. She also presented a congratulatory note from Tourism Malaysia and the resort recognising Budke’s night count.
“The presence of such a large number of long-staying guests in Penang is testament to the quality of Penang’s hospitality industry,” said Dr Ng. “I hope hospitality industry members in Penang will continue to maintain its leadership in the region.”
Resort general manager Elaine Yue said the resort has about 50 guests who return yearly, who stay for between one and six months to escape winter in their own countries.
