Asian exotic fashion initiative set to debut in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The regional fashion industry is set for more excitement, as the Asia Fashion Week (AFW) and Rainforest Fashion Initiative (RFI) will debut in Malaysia later this year.

“The AFW will be staged at an iconic landmark here while the RFI will be held in the rainforests of Sarawak,” said Stylo International CEO and president Datuk Nancy Yeoh.

The announcement was made at a press conference yesterday, which was held after the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Emerging Designers 2013 finals. Described as the largest and most prestigious trade-focused event that will subsequently travel around Asia, the AFW and RFI will see participation from 15 Asian countries.

Its unique concept will be moving the annual fashion week from one Asian country to another, covering both exotic rainforests and capital cities and partnering over 15 Asian countries.

Also at the press conference were Mercedes-Benz Malaysia president and chief executive officer Roland Folger and shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo. They were joined by fashion association heads from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, China, Japan and Thailand.

Folger spoke about the World Fashion Exchange, which Mercedes-Benz Malaysia launched with Stylo two years ago. It resulted in Mohd Hanif Naim, the 2012 winner of the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Emerging Designer, earning a showcase at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Mexico last November.

This year, finalists vie to win a similar slot at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Prague in September. The winners will be revealed at the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Fashion Awards 2013 on Thursday.

“Our Fashion Exchange partnership with Stylo has allowed us to set the bar for young, creative talents and offer them a platform to showcase their designs to the world,” said Folger, who later unveiled Mercedes-Benz’s new A-Class model.

This year’s fashion week is presented by Mercedes-Benz, together wih Stylo International. The Star is the official media partner
