Ng: Fix expo dates in advance to lure business tourists

KUALA LUMPUR: Exhibition organisers should set dates for their events three years in advance to enable Tourism Malaysia to promote them through its annual calendar. Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said an exhibition schedule would help business tourists to plan their trips and consider Malaysia as one of the destinations on a yearly basis.

“Business tourists make up a very important market as they normally stay for a longer period of time an average of 5.85 days per person,” she said at the opening of Malaysian Furniture and Furnishing Fair 2011 here yesterday. She encouraged organisers to work closely with tour agents to arrange pre- and post-exhibition travel around Malaysia for participants.

She said business tourism, identified as an entry point project under the Economic Transformation Programme, made up 5% or 1.3 million of the total 26 million tourist arrivals last year. “In terms of economic value, a business tourist is estimated to spend at least three times more than an average leisure visitor, at RM7,418 compared with RM1,268,” she added.
