Tourism Malaysia Launches New Strategic & Marketing Plan For 2022-2026

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 March 2022 – Tourism Malaysia launched its Strategic & Marketing Plan for 2022-2026, a new organizational strategy set out for the next five years to boost the tourism industry - a timely move to bounce back with the full reopening of Malaysian borders starting 1 April 2022.

The plan launched by Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia today, focuses on domestic tourism promotion as well as international tourism recovery, with greater emphasis on digital adoption, innovation, health and safety.

The six pillars of the strategic plan include: (i) Boost domestic tourism (ii) Forge smart partnerships; (iii) Enhance tourism promotion (online/offline); (iv) Optimise strategic communication and media engagement; (v) Implement travel bubble, and (vi) Undertake strategic transformation.

Meanwhile, the new approach in marketing strategy, among others, outlines a priority in creative and digital marketing, enhancing mix promotion, shifting to emotional and sentiment-based promotions, moving to customized markets, and strengthening the brand.

Tourism Malaysia Strategic & Marketing Plan was developed based on National Tourism Policy 2020-2030, National Ecotourism Plan 2016-2025, National Cultural Policy (DAKEN) 2021 and UNWTO Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The strategies are also formulated on market trends and sentiments, secondary data research as well as input from stakeholders and industry players.

As domestic tourism continues to drive the recovery, Malaysia is also gearing up to welcome international travellers by targeting to attract 2 million tourist arrivals with a contribution of RM8.6 billion this year.

Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy said: “With the widespread vaccination roll-out, lifting of travel restrictions, good coordination and information on travel protocols, it is hoped that it will speed up the recovery of international tourism.

“We are anticipating the return of international tourists, especially from the neighbouring countries as well as medium and long-haul markets, with medical and business travel is expected to regain momentum,” said Nancy.

“Penang is home to us Penangites, yet it is also a destination filled with the known and unknown treasures to be discover by visitors. That is why Penang remains one of the top destinations for travellers throughout the years,” he elaborated, adding that Singapore is Penang’s second biggest arrival market just after Indonesia.

RM12 billion KL Wellness City set to spur medical tourism sector

The KL Wellness City mega project in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, is envisioned as a world-class medical and wellness township with a gross development value (GDV) of nearly RM12 billion.

According to Datuk Dr. Colin Lee, managing director of KL Wellness City Sdn Bhd (KLWC), the 10.73-hectare development will be the first in Southeast Asia to cultivate a lifestyle fully integrated with healthcare.

KLWC is the master developer and owner of KL Wellness City. The land was purchased in 2015 by the company from the Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera, also known as the Armed Forces Fund Board.

The idea to develop the medical township was mooted by Lee, who began his career as a medical doctor from the University of New South Wales, Australia.

According to Lee, the development of the KL Wellness City project would take about 10 years, divided into two major phases.

Construction on phase one, which includes a 517-bed International Hospital and the Nobel Healthcare Park, began about six months ago and spans seven acres, he said.

According to Lee, the gross development cost (GDC) for the phase one development is around RM600 million.

"The International Hospital will be built in two stages. The first phase will include 517 beds and is expected to cost around RM360 million. Phase two will see the hospital expanded to around 1,000 beds. The Nobel Healthcare Park's GDC is estimated to be around RM230 million," he said.

Phase one will be completed by the end of 2024, and both the International Hospital and the Nobel Healthcare Park will open in early 2025, he said.

Nobel Healthcare Park will have a GDV of RM1 billion and three towers of medical and wellness suites, he said.

The medical suites, according to Lee, are built in accordance with Ministry of Health specifications and are designed in a modular format, allowing specialists to choose the ideal size for their practise.

The suites start at 223 square feet and they are selling from RM414,000.

The medical suites, according to Lee, are designed based on the core management team's own experience in the medical field.

"We have infused the design and elements that offer practising medical specialists the flexibility to optimise the use of space to suit their precise requirements and the freedom to make changes according to evolving needs.

"We are confident this will enhance the specialists' interest to own the suites as an investment in addition to running a practice here. We expect a take-up rate of 80 per cent, within the first three months of the first phase's official launch," he said.

Nobel Healthcare Park's wellness suites are fully equipped. The suites provide adaptable living spaces that are suitable for owner occupancy, home office use, or short-term stays such as step-down care and healthcare traveller accommodations.

These suites, which come in 268 sq ft and 386 sq ft sizes, start at RM338,000

Self-sustaining township with GBI-rated properties

Datuk Sri Dr. Vincent Tiew, KLWC executive director (branding, sales, and marketing), said that the International Hospital and Nobel Healthcare Park are pursuing Green Building Index (GBI) certification.

Tiew said GBI is a big deal for hospitals and healthcare components.

He also said that whatever the company builds in KL Wellness City will be one-of-a-kind: the International Hospital, which will be rebranded, will be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, and the healthcare mall, which we will developed under phase two, will be the first of its kind in the world.

"Generally speaking, you will not be able to build this type of medical township if you are a typical property developer. If you are a hospital-related organisation, you will not be constructing a city or a township. You will be extremely hospital- or medical-driven.

"What we are doing here is constructing an ecosystem that is fully integrated between five components. We have wellness, medical tourism, lifestyle (healthcare mall), a property component with serviced suites, lifestyle homes, retirement homes, and, most importantly, a true International Hospital.

"Why are we optimistic about the retirement home market? Because we will be the sole owners of our International Hospital. It is not a small facility. It will be huge, with 1,000 beds and 22 operating theatres. Overall, we are very optimistic because we believe we have the right product to market and the right people in the company to take it forward," Tiew said.

Tiew, who was previously the managing director of the Andaman Property Group of Companies, said that the healthcare mall in phase two development will include several proposed medical and hospital outfits, including a leading oncology centre (cancer centre) in Southeast Asia.

It will also include other components, such as a hotel and retail, to round out and improve the overall ecosystem.

"We believe KL Wellness City will be self-sustaining. This is something that everyone is looking forward to. Malaysia is known for having some of the best medical facilities in the world, and what we offer at KL Wellness City is one-of-a-kind. Furthermore, we have an ageing population that requires such facilities and treatment," he explained.

Astrotourism Pahang Series to woo tourists tourists once border reopens

SUBANG JAYA 21 MAC 2022. Pahang State Tourism Exco, Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin (standing, centre) witnessing during signing memorandum of understanding between Presiden MITA, Uzaidi Udanis (second left) and Chief Executive Officer Apadilangit, Hafez Murtza (second right) at D Tandoor, Subang Jaya. - NSTP/ AZIAH AZMEE

KUALA LUMPUR: Stargazing and other astrotourism activities will soon become the latest official tourism products of Pahang.

This initiative was unveiled today during the pre-launch of the Astrotourism Pahang Series.

Through the project, domestic and foreign tourists will be able to experience Malaysia's one and only International Dark Sky Park.

This first-of-its-kind facility in the country will allow visitors to enjoy nature spots in Pahang that have naturally clear dark skies, especially at night.

Such locations are known among astrotourism enthusiasts as being ideal spots for stargazing.

Pahang Tourism, Culture and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin, who was the guest of honour at the pre-launch event, said the initiative's main strategic focus was to develop an astrotrourism system in Malaysia.

He said the project will also engage communities to raise awareness about Pahang's iconic dark night sky and use it as a valuable asset.

"The location of Pahang, which is a Penisular Malaysia tourism icon, is suitable for stargazing and astronomy related activities.

"Such activities depend on spots which have very low amounts of artificial lights from the city. We will facilitate the protection of Pahang's dark night sky," Sharkar said at the pre-launch event at a restaurant in Subang Jaya here today.

Also present was Malaysia Inbound Tourism Association (MITA) president, Uzaidi Udanis.

Based on MITA data, the association estimated that it received 2.2 million domestic tourists due to multiple movement controls measures.

This year, the association estimated that it could welcome 9 million tourists following the reopening of the international border.

When commenting on this issue, Uzaidi said that MITA and its members were ready for the reopening of the international border on April 1.

He said that he was thankful for the community in MITA for persevering during the extremely tough times brought about by the pandemic.

He said like many other tourism-related entities, MITA has been coming up with new and innovative ideas to sustain the tourism industry, which has been hard-hit due to Covid-19 during the last two years.

"We have been ready and we are prepared for the border opening. Our basic aim is to get the maximum amount of tourists.

"We are still here. Our executive council (exco) members have not given up and all of us have renewed our licences," he said.

On a separate issue, Uzaidi said the recent announcement by the government to raise the country's minimum wage may still pose a problem for workers in big cities.

He said even with the implementation of a RM1,500 minimum wage starting from May 1, the amount was insufficient especially when living in Kuala Lumpur.

"We have employed more than 3.6 million employees, and it is not easy to get new talents. As time goes by, the cost of living is getting higher, and RM1,500 is not enough especially when one lives in the city where everything is pricier," he explained.

Malaysia Aviation Group Announces Regional Partnership with hoolah, Enabling Travellers in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong to Pay for Flights Over Time

Kuala Lumpur, 15 March 2022: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of national carrier Malaysia Airlines, today announced a regional partnership with hoolah, Asia’s leading omnichannel Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) platform, to provide a seamless and convenient payment option for travellers.

Through this collaboration, travellers in Malaysia, Singapore and soon Hong Kong, can now book their getaway with MAG’s main airline, Malaysia Airlines online and pay for their flights via hoolah’s flexible three-month, interest-free payment option. This means that travellers can fly to their destination and enjoy their vacation before paying for the ticket in full, while spreading the cost over three monthly interest-free instalments.

This partnership comes at an opportune time as Malaysia recently announced the reopening of its borders on 1 April 2022, following a two-year closure brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a member of the Travel Safe Alliance Malaysia (TSAM), Malaysia Airlines will continue to facilitate safe and seamless travels to support the country’s #ReopeningSafely strategy.

Pelancaran Program Istana Budaya 2022

15 Mac 2022 - Istana Budaya hari ini melancarkan Program Istana Budaya 2022 bertempat di Lambang Sari, bangunan panggung Istana Budaya. Menurut YB.

Malaysia Ready To Welcome International Travellers As Borders Fully Reopen On 1 April

PUTRAJAYA, 11 March 2022 – Malaysia is all set to welcome back international travellers after the government announced the full reopening of its borders for the first time after nearly two years of COVID-19 pandemic-related closures as the nation is transitioning to endemic phase, beginning 1 April 2022.

Fully-vaccinated travellers can enjoy quarantine-free travel and are only required to take the COVID-19 RT-PCR test two days before departure and undergo professionally administered RTK-Ag within 24 hours upon arrival in Malaysia.

To ease the entry process to Malaysia, travellers with valid travel documents can enter Malaysia by downloading and activating the MySejahtera contact tracing app (from Apple App Store, Google Play Store or Huawei App Gallery) and completing the pre-departure form under the ‘Traveller’ icon without the need to apply for MyTravelPass, which will be abolished. However, international travellers who are not fully vaccinated must undergo five-day quarantine upon arrival.

Meanwhile, children and young people aged 12 to 17 are allowed for quarantine-free entry and only need to undergo professionally administered COVID-19 RTK-Ag within 24 hours upon arrival in Malaysia.

The use of face masks in public places and MySejahtera check-in at premises remain in place as standard practice under the endemic phase, especially in confined areas with large crowds. The government also set out the return of full-capacity activities even though physical distancing would still be encouraged.

YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia said, “We are delighted with the latest government’s announcement for the resumption of international travel, and look forward to engaging with airlines and travel trade to ramp up marketing efforts to promote Malaysia as a safe travel destination.

“With the upcoming reopening of international borders, it is timely for our marketing agency, Tourism Malaysia to implement its Strategic Plan 2022-2026 in undertaking strategic transformation, forging smart partnerships, enhancing tourism promotion and optimising its strategic communication as well as media engagement,” Nancy said.
