Malaysia working to ease VTL-Land implementation with Thailand, Singapore, Brunei

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia hopes to resolve issues on the implementation of the land Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL-Land) between the country and Thailand, Singapore as well as Brunei before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration in May.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Health Ministry was looking into several recommendations proposed by the Cabinet to ease cross-border movements by land between the four countries.

Apart from accelerating the recovery process of the tourism sector, Ismail Sabri said VTL-Land would also help boost bilateral trade and allow family members in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei to get together.

"The Health Ministry is finding the best approach to ease the implementation of VTL-Land, not only between Malaysia and Thailand but also with Singapore and Brunei.

"For example, there are almost 200,000 people commuting between Malaysia and Singapore.

"As for (the VTL-Land between Malaysia and) Brunei, people from Limbang have to pass through Brunei to travel to Lawas in Sarawak.

"I hope issues revolving the VTL-Land between Malaysia and Thailand, Singapore and Brunei can be resolved immediately, since it is not only important to boost tourism sector and stimulate the economy but it is also equally important to reunite families who are staying apart," he said.

Ismail Sabri said this during a press conference with the Malaysian media at Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok) in conjunction with his two-day working visit to Thailand.

"We also want to resolve all issues related to the implementation of VTL-Land immediately to enable all people (Malaysians working and residing in Thailand, Singapore and Brunei) to return home for the Hari Raya celebration," he said.

It was reported that Malaysia and Thailand is targeting to increase their bilateral trade to US$30 billion (RM126 billion) by the year 2025 as they prepare to resume cross border movement for vaccinated travellers between both countries through the implementation of VTL by land, sea and air.

Both countries registered US$23.64 billion (RM99.29 billion) in bilateral trade last year, with almost 50 per cent or US$10.5 billion (RM44.10 billion) contributed by trade activities along the Malaysia-Thailand border.

"The reopening of border (cross border movement) is important for Malaysia and Thailand," he said.

Asked about a specific timeline on the implementation of the VTL by land, air and sea between Malaysia and Thailand, Ismail Sabri said: "Soon."

The implementation of VTL, said Ismail Sabri, was among several important matters discussed during his meeting with his Thai counterpart Prayuth Chan o-cha at the republic's Government House yesterday.

To facilitate and accommodate the implementation of Malaysia-Thailand VTL, Ismail Sabri said both countries had agreed to recognise the digital Covid-19 vaccination certificates in Malaysia and Thailand.

"This will be supported with the integration of the Malaysia's MySejahtera application and Thailand's Mor Prom application to facilitate cross border movement among travellers between the two countries," he said.

Other matters discussed during his meeting with his Thai counterparts included on cooperation on the development of Covid-19 vaccines between Malaysia and Thailand.

To enhance land connectivity between the two neighbouring nations, both leaders also agreed to expedite the constructions of roads linking the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, and the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex in Sadao.

Other new opportunities explored by the two leaders included carrying out a survey for the construction of high-speed rail (HSR) project linking Kuala Lumpur and Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok).

"Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to carry feasibility study on the development of such project in which we will instruct the respective ministries and departments to take immediate actions," he said.

PUTRAJAYA: Sabah recorded a total of 9,848 domestic tourists staying at homestays with package sales worth RM469,671.55 last year.

The statistics are based on Malaysian Homestay Experience Programme records up to Aug 31.

Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Noredah Othman said the state has been emphasising community-based tourism as it has become the preferred and trendy choice among domestic tourists due to the pandemic.

"Rural tourism has picked up in the last two months since interstate travelling was allowed.

"It has also become the ideal destination especially for visitors to practise social distancing due to the open areas in villages.

"Although Peninsular Malaysia also has its own rural tourism, the experience and atmosphere will still be different compared to Sabah," she said in conjunction with the 'My Destination Sabah and Labuan Meet Johor and Putrajaya Roadshow 2022'.

During the launch at a hotel here, Tourism Malaysia Domestic and Events Division senior director Iskandar Mirza Mohd Yusof said at present, tourists were interested to learn about culture, traditions, food, handicraft, and the way of life of the local community.

He said a collaboration between Sabah Tourism Malaysia, STB and Sabah Rural Tourism Associations (FeRTAS) had resulted in a guidebook to promote community-based tourism destinations in eight districts in Sabah, namely Kota Belud, Tambunan, Papar, Kuala Penyu, Nabawan, Beluran, Keningau and Telupid.

Iskandar added they had also launched Sabah Homestay e-Packages in December last year to help owners develop and promote their packages digitally.

As for Labuan island, which is adjacent to Sabah, its warm hospitality could be experienced through its homestays such as Homestay Sungai Labu, Homestay Bukit Kuda, and Homestay Kampung Patau-Patau II which is one of the last remaining water village homestays in Malaysia.

Labuan, which is also being recognised as one of the national geoparks in Malaysia, is rich with its own list of special attractions.

The Labuan national geopark displayed the evolution of sedimentary rocks and landscapes that formed Labuan as well as biological sites.

The roadshow here is targeting buyers in the central region following a session in the southern region of Johor yesterday.

There are 28 sellers from Sabah and Labuan, consisting of 18 tour operators, seven hotels, and three airline companies (Malaysia Airlines, MASwings and AirAsia) to meet 70 to 80 buyers from the central region consisting of travel companies, government departments and corporate organisations.

It involves bilateral business-to-business (B2B) meetings between tour operators as sellers to boost the movement of domestic tourism among travellers in the central region.

Also present were Tourism Malaysia Sabah deputy director Trecey Tojuka, Labuan Corporation's Tourism, Culture and Arts Department assistant director Zunaidah Hamzah and Sabah Tourist Association chairman Tonny Chew.

‘MY DESTINATION SABAH & LABUAN’ Continues In Putrajaya

PUTRAJAYA, 24 February 2022 – Following its first session in the Southern Region, My Destination Sabah & Labuan Meet Johor and Putrajaya Roadshow 2022 continues in Putrajaya, targeting participants from the Central Region through its promotional programme. Held at The Everly Putrajaya, this year’s roadshow is succeeded by its first mission that was held in Penang last December with the industry partners in the Northern Region.

An initiative between Tourism Malaysia together with its strategic partners; Sabah Tourism Board, Labuan Corporation, Sabah Tourist Association (STA), Malaysia Airlines Berhad, MASwings, and AirAsia Berhad, this programme aims to provide motivation and tour operator support to tourism industry players in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan to further stimulate the revival of the domestic tourism sector. Sarawak targets 1.2 million visitors this year

KUCHING: Sarawak is targeting to receive 1.2 million visitors and generate RM3.2 billion tourism receipts this year.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah said visitor arrivals increased by 453.62 per cent in January this year to 72,331 as compared to the corresponding period in 2021.

He said as the international tourism slowly bounced back as borders started to reopen, domestic tourism would continue to drive the sector's recovery in an increasing number of destinations.

"Domestic travel is fuelled by demand for destinations which are closer to home and have low population density, as tourists look for open-air activities, nature-based products and rural tourism," he said.

"Most experts also believe international tourism will not return to 2019 levels until 2024 or later," he said at the Sarawak Tourism Steering Committee Meeting (STSC) 2022 held here today.

Karim said the Sarawak government had engaged with the Transport Ministry to establish a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between Singapore and Kuching.

"My ministry has engaged closely with SDMC (Sarawak Disaster Management Committee) regarding our border opening which is in line with the latest development tentatively to be opened in the second quarter of 2022.

"Besides VTL with Singapore, Malaysia is also discussing quarantine-free travel with Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand as announced recently by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob," he said,

Karim hoped that all the policies, directions and strategies would not only help the tourism industry players ,but also transformed into opportunities for the local communities to benefit in the future.

He said the local communities could participate in community-based tourism such as homestay, local hosts, craft and souvenirs making activity to reap the benefits from tourism and increase their household income

The ministry, he said, would continue to provide annual grant of RM100,000 to the Sarawak Tourism Federation being the umbrella body for the Sarawak Tourism Industry to facilitate its role to be the bridge between the authorities and the tourism industry in Sarawak.

Karim also launched Sarawak's Tourism Quick Fact Book 2021 and Calendar of Event 2022 in both electronic form at https://mtcp.sarawak.gov.my and printed copies at the event.

"Through the teaching experience of a world renowned and world-breaking sports woman as Sahika, we can reach out to younger generations across the globe on what they can do and achieve," said the ambassador.

Berkayak menelusuri terowong belah bukit batu kapur berusia 500 juta tahun

AirAsia, Avolon take off on air ridesharing service in SE Asia

AirAsia Aviation Group is looking to disrupt South-east Asia’s aviation industry once more through a low-cost air ridesharing service in partnership with Avolon.

The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on February 16 to lease 100 VX4 eVTOL aircraft from Ireland-based Avolon. The aircraft can take four passengers and one pilot, flies at speed of up to 200mph, and produces zero operating emissions.

In addition to leasing the eVTOL aircraft to AirAsia, Avolon, through its investment and innovation affiliate Avolon-e, will partner with AirAsia to commercialise the aircraft and develop an industry leading urban air mobility (UAM) platform in South-east Asia.

Dómhnal Slattery, CEO of Avolon, said: “Together (with AirAsia) we will develop a ridesharing platform and bring the zero-emissions VX4 aircraft into service, positioning AirAsia as the operator of choice for sustainable air travel in the region.”

Tony Fernandez, CEO of Capital A, noted the huge tourism potential of this new mode of air transport, saying that it would be able to transport people to off-the-beaten-track destinations such as national parks as well as to tourist islands.

Asked about possible routes he foresees, he said “Kuala Lumpur to Genting (highlands) is a no-brainer”.

He expressed excitement over the “potential for zero-emissions ultra-shorthaul air travel in South-east Asia.”

The new air services are expected to commence in 2025. However, test flights will begin this April.

Currently, AirAsia is laying the groundwork by getting the necessary regulatory approvals and certifications, as well as looking at developing a new eco-system that includes launch and landing pads as well as pilot training.

Fernandez expects Malaysia to be the first destination to launch this new product, and said the local aviation authorities have been encouraging.

The pricing model will be kept as attractive as AirAsia in order to target the mass market. Fernandez wants it to be “very accessible to the world”.

PATA casts bullish projection for 2022 APAC arrivals

The PATA Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts 2022-2024 Full Report released on February 15 is predicting international visitor arrivals (IVAs) growth rates of 126 per cent to 84 per cent for mild, medium, and severe scenarios in 2022 versus 2021.

The increase in the absolute number of IVAs is predicted therefore to range from 72.5 million to 175.7 million under the severe and mild scenarios respectively, lifting the total volume of visitor arrivals to between 159 million and 315 million, under those same scenarios respectively.

While it is a positive and welcome development after two years of extremely difficult conditions, the international travel and tourism sector of the Asia-Pacific region still has much to repair and revitalise.

The forecasted increases in 2022 arrivals, for example, still only return them to 23-45 per cent of the level of foreign arrivals received in pre-pandemic 2019.

Moving forward to 2024, IVA growth over the next three years is projected to be positive, with the volume of IVAs in 2024 being equal to, or better than that of 2019, under two of the three scenarios.

PATA CEO Liz Ortiguera said: “Our latest forecast report numbers, based on data as of November 2021 reviewed in conjunction with our recent research advisory panel updates provided on January 24, 2021, provide the definitive outlook for Asia-Pacific visitor arrival forecasts. As noted by our panel, the effect of the Omicron variant is projected to have a small incremental impact for now, with the key earlier assumptions still driving the forecast.

“Equitable access and deployment of vaccines plus a practical risk-based approach to health and safety protocols in travel is foundational to not only the travel sector’s sustained recovery but to the overall global recovery from the pandemic.

“We share the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) view that the pharmaceutical sector must address barriers to access and affordability for all destinations. Furthermore, as acknowledged by the WHO, travel bans will not prevent international spread. Instead, travel channels should remain open with clear, practical guidelines as recently shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and WHO.”

Ortiguera also noted: “Various research studies and early travel patterns indicate a heightened consumer interest in a pivot to the right side of travel – longer journeys, more authentic experiences, and nature-based, wellness-oriented, and socially-conscious travel offerings are among the key trends for today’s travellers.

“Destinations can expedite their recovery by staying top-of-mind with consumers, communicating requirements with clarity and consistency, and offering a sustainable, healthy destination experience.”

Jerai Geopark disasar jadi Global Geopark

In support of South-east Asian travel and tourism recovery, TTG Asia Media will host a six-month long B2B exhibition showcase from June to November this year.

Presented as The Great ASEAN Travel Fest Plus 2022, the event will feature interactive booths with 3D booth imaging and sales enablement capabilities, unlimited Walk-in Meets throughout 180 days, and monthly engagement activities to bring buyers and sellers together.

A highlight of the online event is the two Open Houses, once in June and the other in November, where there will be themed streaming to highlight specific destinations as well as travel and hospitality brands.

Buyers will earn incentives and training certificates from their participation, while sellers will benefit from wider exposure beyond the travel trade industry.

Commenting on the event, Cheryl Tan, head of TTG Events, said: “This year’s event expands the benefits of a B2B tradeshow beyond just two to three days, by offering six months of unlimited exposure and traffic to destinations and brands.

“The show’s unique formula combines a variety of monthly engagement activities to provide valuable opportunities for buyers to engage with exhibitors through one-on-one meetings, streaming content, brand festival showcases, training videos, mission-to-win interactive games and more throughout the half-year duration. Buyers are also generously rewarded for their time with the show’s incentive scheme.

“As reflected with the Plus extension in the event name, the 2022 edition will also welcome suppliers beyond ASEAN, and looks forward to a diversified representation of destinations and brands.”

The Great ASEAN Travel Fest Plus 2022 is supported by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

TTG Asia Media’s inaugural The Great ASEAN Travel Fest, launched in May 2021, featured a plethora of hotels and resorts, tour specialists and destination marketers and NTOs, such as Holiday Inn Express Singapore Orchard Road; Sarawak Tourism Board, Malaysia; Panorama Destination; and Santika Indonesia Hotels and Resorts.

LABUAN: The Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry (KePKAS) is ready to work together to develop the tourism industry between Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan.

Its Minister, Datuk Jafry Ariffin suggested they jointly organise several programmes in the future, including promoting the National Geopark Labuan and National Geopark Kinabalu as well as the islands in both places.

Efforts must also be made to highlight the historical heritage of Sabah and Labuan, including the Labuan War Cemetery and Kundasang War Memorial, he said during a courtesy call on Labuan Corporation here yesterday.

Also present were Labuan Corporation chairman, Datuk Sri Amir Hussien, deputy chief executive officer (management) Rithuan Mohd Ismail as well as representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac).

Jafry said KePKAS is also planning to promote tourism activities via sports and leisure platforms such as cycling, golf and Sabah-Labuan international fishing competitions.

"I am confident and believe that with continued efforts between both parties, we can revive the tourism industry badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic."

Next will be the continuation to promote "MY Destination Sabah and Labuan" to Johor and Putrajaya from Feb 22 to 25 after the successful outing to Penang on Dec 2, 2021.

MPN setuju sempadan negara dibuka 1 Mac

image: Pelancongan Kini
