The special award validates the airline's commitment to keeping its customer as the centre of gravity by creating lifelong connections and beautiful memories through every customer journey. This underpins the three pillars of the airline's customer experience proposition – service from the heart, honest communication, and integrity.

The award also reflects Malaysia Airlines' exceptional customer support throughout the COVID-19 pandemic for the past 20 months, where airline personnel worked around the clock to assist customers through a host of customer support platforms.

In addition to this, the national carrier also played an instrumental role in assisting various governments transport their citizens home through the mounting of repatriation flights and flying in the much-needed vaccines for the country in support of the National Vaccination Programme.

This award, which is judged entirely by customers and further endorsed by an independent third party, is a testament to Malaysia Airlines’ ability to swiftly adapt to customers’ changing needs and pivot towards transforming the MH customer experience.

Group Chief Marketing and Customer Experience of Malaysia Airlines Berhad, Lau Yin May said, "We are so very proud to have won this award and we thank our customers for their continued trust in us. It has been a challenging period for customers and airlines with the uncertainty in travel caused by COVID-19 related restrictions, but we remained steadfast in giving customer the peace of mind with our strong customer support initiatives. The award serves to validate the exemplary efforts of our men and women who work hard and go beyond the call of duty to serve our customers with heartfelt Malaysian Hospitality.

When our flight operations were at a grinding halt challenged by the pandemic, which created many uncertainties, we kept conversations going and connected with our customers to remain at the top of their minds. One of the ways was through focus group sessions and a series of surveys developed in-house for customers called the “MH Ready to Fly Survey” to understand their needs and priorities. This engagement provided much-needed insights for us to respond to customers' evolving travel priorities. I am proud to share that we achieved exceptional performance with our Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) which was recorded at 84% year-to-date, while our Net Promoter Score (NPS) is hovering at a ground-breaking score of +55. We will continue being receptive to our customers' evolving needs as we step into the new norm together.

Pengiktirafan Songket Di Bawah Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity UNESCO Tahun 2021

15 DISEMBER 2021 - Songket yang digelar sebagai "Ratu Kain" dalam tenunan Melayu sekali lagi berjaya melakar sejarah apabila disenaraikan di bawah Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity semasa 16th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Kementerian Pelancongan, Seni dan Budaya Malaysia melalui Jabatan Warisan Negara (JWN) telah mencalonkan Songket di bawah Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity UNESCO.

Ministry beefs up efforts to revive tourism sector in 2022

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Art and Culture Ministry will beef up efforts to revive the nation's tourism sector in 2022.

The move will be part of realising the National Tourism Policy 2020-2030, said its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She added that among the efforts to be undertaken by the authorities is to promote hidden tourism gems for both the domestic and international tourists, which holds potential in generating income for the industry players.

Nancy also said her ministry would look into upskilling and reskilling tourism industry players, enabling them to provide the best for their customers.

"Tourism industry players have to start utilising social media platforms in promoting their products and services to attract domestic and international tourists.

"I see many young people have begun doing so, and it has successfully garnered attention to their products, such as crafts and arts. It should be done for tourism too.

"We are aiming to attract more international and domestic tourists to travel around the country in 2022. So, more improvements and upgrades work are set to be in place next year," she said.

Nancy told this to reporters after the launch of the Tower Walk 100 at Menara Kuala Lumpur, here, today.

Present at the launch was Menara Kuala Lumpur chief executive officer Ainol Shaharina Sahar.

The Tower Walk 100 is being held in conjunction with Menara Kuala Lumpur's 25th anniversary.

Nancy said moving forward, the ministry is looking at more collaborations between industry players, state and federal government as well as with private sector players.

She said these collaborations hopefully would lead to creating a tourism investment development zone in each of the states.

"We have to come up with creative ideas for the tourism industry to generate and cover the loss of income burden brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The discussions for these collaborations have been up and running, and we are encouraging agencies and industry players to create these zones."

Nancy said in 2019, the tourism sector generated RM85 billion in tourism receipts and RM103 billion from domestic tourists alone.

"As of yesterday (Dec 13), I was informed that there have been more than 600 foreign tourists that had entered our country for tourism activities.

"The figures might not be a good one, but it is still a good start for our industry.

"This shows that our local tourism is more than able to generate our country's income and from this, we are pushing for more improvements for the industry, in the coming years, in line with the National Tourism Policy," she said.

Nancy also encouraged tourism players to come up with more tourist-attractive products such as the Tower Walk 100 activities.

The Tower Walk 100 is the latest attraction available at level TO2 in Menara Kuala Lumpur, where members of the public will get the chance to walk on a glass platform placed outside the tower while enjoying a 360 degrees view.

The activity, which comes with high safety standards and equipment, has been open to the public since Nov 27 this year.

Members of the public who want to feel the adventure will be hooked to a harness during the 30-minute walkabout around the tower.

Tickets for adult MyKad holders are sold at RM35, while it is RM25 for MyKid. Parents will have to ensure their kids are above four feet tall to enter.

Currently, Menara Kuala Lumpur is having a Year-End Sale where one adult ticket will come with two free kid's tickets. The promotions are available until Dec 31.

Gelembung Perjalanan Domestik Langkawi Berjaya

IPOH: Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) will implement the use of an electric bus on the Heritage Trail by early next year.

Perak Health, Science, Environment and Green Technology committee chairman Mohd Akmal Kamarudin said the initiative was in the final stages of implementation.

"The bus will be operated by MPT itself with the aim of being a catalyst for local heritage tourism.

"A middle-sized electric vehicle (EV) (bus) which uses full electricity has been donated by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

"This initiative involves the cooperation of several local companies and also from Japan," he said.

The Pas-Selama assemblyman said in this in his reply to a question from Loh Sze Yee (DAP-Jalong) at the state assembly sitting here, today.

Mohd Akmal added that the infrastructure on the Heritage Trail has been completed, including the construction of a bus stop and an electric bus charging centre.

He said the Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI), is planning to collaborate with the private sector in the provision of electric car charging services.

"This initiative is an effort to encourage the use of EVs in the future, while several locations have been identified for the installation of such chargers.

"However, the use of EVs is a long-term plan that must take into account various factors such as infrastructure facilities, the availability of manufacturers and consumers," he added.

The Taiping Heritage Trail consists of 40 site destinations, including Taiping Zoo, Raintree Walk, Jubilee Jetty Perak, Clock Tower, Peace Hotel, Peking Hotel, Kota Mosque, Hokkien Association, Sikh Gurdwara, Railway Station, St George School, Post Office,The New Club, All Saints' Church, Perak Museum and many others.

In replying to an additional question by Loh, Mohd Akmal said the state would create more EV charging stations throughout the state, especially in Ipoh.

Mohd Akmal said the matter was one of the proposals highlighted in the Perak Sustainable Greenprint 2030 which was completed within a year.

Domestic tourism picking up pace

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is seeing a boom in domestic tourism despite the Omicron scare as the long year-end school holidays begin.

Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association president Uzaidi Udanis said concerns about the Covid-19 Omicron variant had not disrupted the industry's recovery with no major booking cancellations recorded.

"Everyone (businesses and the public) is being cautious about the Omicron variant, but we have learnt a lot since last year and Malaysians know better on how to protect themselves.

"Malaysia is one of the most vaccinated countries against Covid-19, thanks to the government's efforts, which played a role in reviving the tourism industry as people are more willing to travel now.

"There are still a high number of bookings. Many hotels and accommodations in Selangor and premium hotels in Langkawi, for instance, have been fully booked this month," he told the New Straits Times.

An influx of tourists from Singapore, he said, was expected as there were six daily flights between Changi Airport and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport under the vaccinated travel lane scheme, from which they could travel onward to local destinations.

He said one of the challenges was that some hotels and local businesses, such as the food and beverage sector and housekeeping in hospitality, could not operate at full capacity due to manpower shortages.

"Job cuts and the 'Great Resignation' hit the industry during the pandemic, but we are prepared for this problem compared with having no business at all during the lockdown."

Uzaidi said although experts had predicted that the global tourism would recover only by 2024, Malaysia had to gear itself for the international market now as the country competed with neighbouring countries and emerging tourism markets, such as Saudi Arabia.

The Department of Statistics data showed that Malaysia's domestic tourism spending plunged 60.8 per cent last year to RM40.4 billion compared with RM103.2 billion in 2019 as domestic visitor arrivals decreased due to Covid-19 movement restrictions.

Overall, domestic visitor arrivals decreased by 44.9 per cent to record 131.7 million visitors compared with 239.1 million visitors in 2019.

Malaysian Association of Hotels chief executive officer Yap Lip Seng said there had not been significant cancellations for the domestic market and not specifically related to Omicron, but the Langkawi international travel bubble, apart from restrictive requirements, saw cancellations due to the growing list of countries recording Omicron cases.

Yap said concerns had been raised about the Omicron variant by domestic traveller,s but Malaysians were still confident of travelling, particularly this year end.

"Without conclusive studies on Omicron, whether it differs from other variants of concern, the same standard operating procedures and preventive measures taken by the industry should be sufficient, as long as they are being adhered to strictly."

Yap said some hotels in certain locality or locations faced manpower shortages due to the uptick in tourists.

"Hotel operations are unique in a sense that manpower needs are driven by tourism demand.

"Most, if not all, hotels are facing challenges in balancing manpower needs on weekdays versus weekends and holiday periods.

"Without international tourists, hotels are left with gaps where occupancy rates can be too low on certain days and too high on some.

"Hotels will not be able to afford hiring full manpower on a permanent basis, but instead rely on temporary workers on peak days or contractual service providers."

Hotels, he said, would, however, take extra steps to manage expectations of guests and ensure SOP compliance, besides reducing inventory of rooms and limiting customers to ensure timely delivery of service.

"Hotels are also engaging part-timers and freelance workers, including special groups, such as single mothers, offering attractive rates and potentially work contracts to recruit more manpower on top of redeploying back office employees for the purpose."

Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) spokesman and honorary treasurer Nigel Wong said while domestic travel was expected to do well given the current border restrictions, domestic tourism was also heavily influenced by seasonal trends and tourism stakeholders would continue to struggle until there were more international tourist arrivals.

Wong said the government should provide additional financial stimulus in the form of more accessible grants and funding to help tourism stakeholders weather the situation and, more importantly, to prepare for the full opening of borders.

"Matta calls on the government to fully support The Travel Safe Alliance, an internationally recognised initiative by Matta, the Malaysian Association of Hotels, Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers, and the Malaysian Aviation Group,

to provide a first-to-last-mile travel safe experience to travellers.

"This programme is geared towards the needs of foreign tourists and will be important in promoting Malaysia as a safe and attractive destination to international tourists."

Star Cruises to restart domestic sailings in Malaysia

Star Cruises is set to become the first cruise line to resume operations in Malaysia, with Star Pisces offering domestic cruises from Penang starting December 22.

Parent company Genting Cruise Lines (GCL), together with Penang Port Commission and Penang Port, have been granted approval by the Malaysian government to restart cruises from Penang.

Star Pisces to offer safe cruises from Penang starting December 22

Star Pisces will have five departures every week, offering a series of roundtrip itineraries from Penang, including a two-night Langkawi Escape and a one-night Straits of Malacca cruise itinerary.

GCL also plans to launch more ships under the Star Cruises fleet.

Star Pisces will initially operate at a reduced passenger capacity of 50 per cent with strict enhanced safety and preventive measures. All individuals on board must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19. In addition, all embarking guests are required to present a negative test result after completing the mandatory pre-boarding antigen rapid test, which will be conducted at the cruise terminal on the day of the departure.

GCL president Kent Zhu said: “We hope to call on to more Malaysian destinations and to expand our itineraries with the inclusion of regional destinations like Phuket in the near future to spur the cruise tourism industry.

“We are also actively pursuing with the various port authorities to create a ‘Harmonize Cruising Standards’ for the region in the hope of gradually reopening international cruising in a controlled and safe manner, which will also bring inbound tourists to Malaysia, especially from our ship in Singapore.”

Star Pisces bookings will be open in mid-December and available to all Malaysian citizens, foreigners with valid Malaysian long-term visit passes, as well as international tourists who have completed and passed the quarantine and home surveillance order by the Malaysian authorities.

Since July 2020, GCL was the first international cruise company in the world to pioneer and successfully restart operations with Dream Cruises, starting in Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
